PURPOSE: Differences between child-directed speech (CDS) by women and men are generally explained by either biological-evolutionary or gender-social theories. It is difficult to tease these two explanations apart for different-sex-parent families because women are usually also the main caregivers. Thus, this study aims to examine the influence of parental sex on CDS by investigating men and women who are in same-sex-parent families.
METHOD: Twenty same-sex-parent families participated in the study-10 families in which the parents were two men and 10 families in which the parents were two wome

BACKGROUND: Stark socioeconomic health inequalities exist in the UK, with families from ethnic minority backgrounds disproportionally affected. Robust evidence is needed on interventions that can improve family wellbeing. We aimed to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a group-based parenting intervention (Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities [SFSC]) in enhancing parental mental wellbeing.
METHODS: We conducted a randomised, multicentre, waiting list controlled trial of a parenting intervention in socially and ethnically diverse urban areas in England. Participants

INTRODUCTION: Early childhood is a critical period for development, yet families in low-resource settings often face barriers that compromise effective caregiving. Research evidence shows that parenting interventions can improve child growth and development. Given the unique challenges faced by single-headed households, this study examined whether caregiver household type modified the effects of Sugira Muryango, an evidence-based home-visiting program in Rwanda. Specifically, it assessed whether changes in child growth and development, dietary diversity, and healthcare-seeking behaviors over t

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common congenital heart defect, which can cause severe cardiac complications. BAVs cluster in families and demonstrate high heritability. Cardiac screening for first-degree relatives of individuals with a BAV is recommended. This retrospective two-group study evaluated the impact of cardiovascular genetic counseling provided by a board-certified genetic counselor on parent-reported outcomes by comparing parental responses of those who received genetic counseling by a genetic counselor (GC group) for family history of BAV to those who did not (non-GC grou

OBJECTIVE: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for children (MBCT-C) is an evidence-based intervention that requires further investigation in relation to its effectivness across diverse populations and prolonged follow-up durations. The present study aimed to develop a study protocol to evaluate MBCT-C in addressing internalizing and externalizing problems, as well as attention problems, among children from single-parent families.
METHOD: A two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) using crossover conditions is proposed. The intervention condition will receive twelve weekly sessions of MBCT-C

OBJECTIVE: This paper discusses the ways in which existing microeconomic theories of partner abuse, intra-family bargaining, and distribution of resources within families may contribute to our current understanding of physical child abuse. The empirical implications of this discussion are then tested on data from the 1985 National Family Violence Survey (NFVS) in order to estimate the effects of income, family characteristics, and state characteristics on physical violence toward children.
METHODOLOGY: The sample consists of 2,760 families with children from the NFVS. Probit and ordered probi

Single childhood is a growing social phenomenon in Iran that occurs under the influence of various factors that need to be identified. Therefore, the current research was conducted to explain the reasons behind only single children in Western Iran. This qualitative research was conducted using a conventional qualitative content analysis approach in Lorestan province, western Iran. The study participants were parents with one child who no longer wanted to have more children. Key informants were also involved in the study. To identify participants, purposive and snowball sampling were used. Data

INTRODUCTION: The period of life known as adolescence generally refers to transition from childhood to adulthood. Adolescents' progress toward autonomy involves remaining connected with, as well as separated from parents. Young people and their parents usually have mixed feelings about adolescent autonomy and attachment. An estimated 50% of children born in the 80-s have spent part of their developmental years in single-parent households. Divorce is almost always a stressful event in children's lives. Youthful suicide rate has increased dramatically and is the third leading cause of death amon

Divorce, which was once a rare phenomenon in Kuwait, now occurs in nearly one third of all marriages. The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in self-esteem, locus of control, and attitude toward parents between Kuwaiti adolescents from divorced and intact families. The results revealed that adolescents from divorced families showed higher self-esteem than adolescents from intact families. Within the divorced families, females showed higher self-esteem compared to males. There was no difference in locus of control between divorced and intact families nor were there any gender

AIM: To study the prevalence of behavioural and emotional problems among children from different family types, sibship size and birth order.
METHODS: A prospective birth cohort (n = 9357) study where parents filled in two questionnaires and teachers assessed children's behaviour using the Rutter scale (RB2).
RESULTS: 14.3% scored above the cut-off point (RB2 > or = 9) indicating probable psychiatric disturbance, boys more often than girls (OR 2.6, 95% CI 2.3-3.0). Behavioural problems (9.2%) were more common than emotional ones (4.1%). Boys living in families other than two-parent families w

Up to 85% of health is governed by social determinants such as economic stability. By supporting healthy financial behavior changes to increase economic stability, the Financial Success Program (FSP) is a modality that also addresses the limitations of other health interventions in single mother, low-income households. The novel FSP financial education/coaching intervention has previously been shown to reduce financial strain and perceived effects of financial strain on health, improve relationships, reduce smoking and increase healthcare access. This manuscript reports the financial and econo

Internalizing and externalizing behavior problems are associated with a variety of negative child outcomes, but these conclusions have been drawn from research that usually compares children in families with two biological, married parents to all other family types. We compare behavior problems across two-parent, single-mother, and single-father families, which allows us to explore competing gender theories as possible explanations for why child behavior outcomes may be different across these three categories. Results from analyses of the UK Millennium Cohort Study suggest that while children

Recent research has documented that the effect of parental separation on children's educational outcomes depends on socioeconomic background. Yet, parental separation could lead to a stable single-parent family or to a further transition to a stepfamily. Little is known about how the effect of family structure transitions on educational outcomes depends on the education of parents and stepparents, and there has been limited empirical research into the mechanisms that explain heterogeneity in the effects of family transitions. Using longitudinal data from the German Socio-Economic Panel and mod

OBJECTIVE: Parent-focused interventions have the potential to reduce parental risk factors for children's anxiety. We tested three theoretically distinct intervention components, targeting distinct parental risk factors, to improve understanding of the role of these factors in children's anxiety, and to guide intervention program development.
METHOD: We used a 12-week factorial experiment with random allocation to any possible combination and order of three single-session online components: (1) reducing family accommodation, (2) increasing parental empathetic responses, and (3) cognitive rest

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether effects of congenital heart disease (CHD) severity and family life stress on behavioral and emotional functioning are mediated by disease-related chronic stress and psychosocial adaptation.
STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional analysis of the Pediatric Cardiac Quality of Life Inventory Testing Study was performed. Relationships between CHD severity (comprising 3 groups: mild heart disease, moderate biventricular disease, and single ventricle) and family life stress, on patient- and parent disease-related chronic stress, psychosocial adaptation, and behavioral-emotion

Developmental changes and within-family consistency in parent-child interactions were examined for mothers and fathers of school-age children (6 to 18 years) with mental retardation. At Time 1 and 18 to 24 months later, 98 families (29 single, 69 two-parent) with a child who had mild or moderate mental retardation completed semi-structured interaction sessions in their homes. As expected, both positive and negative exchanges decreased longitudinally, and cross-sectional comparisons revealed fewer parent commands, less child noncompliance, fewer child negatives, and less parent positive recipro

This study evaluated two pathways that may help explain changes in parent mental health during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. One pathway, the preexisting vulnerability pathway, considered whether family relationship quality prior to the COVID-19 pandemic predicted parent mental health during the pandemic. The second, the family disruption pathway, considered deterioration in family relationship quality as predictive of declines in parent mental health during the pandemic. We measured family relationship quality in terms of family cohesion, conflict, and routines and predicted pare

How have recent changes in U.S. family structure affected the cognitive, social, and emotional well-being of the nation's children? Paul Amato examines the effects of family formation on children and evaluates whether current marriage-promotion programs are likely to meet children's needs. Amato begins by investigating how children in households with both biological parents differ from children in households with only one biological parent. He shows that children growing up with two continuously married parents are less likely to experience a wide range of cognitive, emotional, and social prob
