Application of hydroxyapatite/collagen composite material for maxillary sinus floor augmentation.

The aim of this study was to clarify whether hydroxyapatite/collagen composite material (HAp/Col) could be useful as a graft material for maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA). MSFA and implant placement were performed simultaneously. When the lateral approach was employed, 3 out of 19 implants failed in 3 maxillary sinuses (success rate; 84.2%), and in these cases the alveolar bone heights, cortical bone thicknesses and values of the implant stability quotient were smaller. If alveolar the bone height, cortical bone thickness, and healing period are optimized, HAp/Col can be a useful graf

A Reliable Surgical Procedure for Sinus Floor Augmentation with Antral Pseudocysts.

An antral pseudocyst (AP) is a common well-defined 'dome-shaped' faintly radiopaque lesion of the maxillary sinus, and usually does not require treatment in asymptomatic patients. However, when sinus floor augmentation is required to increase bone volume for implant installation, the elevation of the sinus mucosa might drive the AP against the ostium. This might cause its obstruction and, as possible consequence, sinusitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and tomographic conditions of APs to identify a predictable cyst removal that might allow a safety sinus floor aug

Maxillary Sinus Floor Augmentation Using Xenograft: Gene Expression and Histologic Analysis.

PURPOSE: Many histologic and histomorphometric studies as well as systematic reviews have shown the clinical success of the use of anorganic bovine bone (ABB, Bio-Oss) in maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA). The molecular processes involved in bone healing are, however, still unknown. The aims of this study were to explore gene expression associated with bone remodeling and inflammation in MSFA sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mRNA expression levels of runt related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), receptor activator of NF-kB ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG), matrix metallopeptidase

Surgical Ciliated Cyst Following Maxillary Sinus Floor Augmentation: A Case Report.

Maxillary sinus floor augmentation is considered to play a critical role in dental implant treatment. Although many complications, such as maxillary sinusitis and infection, are well known, few reports are available on the risk of surgical ciliated cyst following the procedure. Here, we report a case of surgical ciliated cyst following maxillary sinus floor augmentation. A 55-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our hospital because of alveolar bone atrophy in the bilateral maxilla. We performed bilateral maxillary sinus floor augmentation by the lateral window technique without covering th

Late recovery from foreign body sinusitis after maxillary sinus floor augmentation.

A 55-year-old male patient was referred to our clinic with signs and symptoms of recurring sinusitis after a right maxillary sinus floor augmentation for implantological purposes. Investigations showed an antibiotic-resistant ethmoidomaxillary sinusitis resulting from bone graft infection and displacement of previously inserted xenograft material into the maxillary sinus. The patient thus underwent a surgical procedure combining nasal endoscopy and oral surgery in order to remove the infected graft and restore sinusal drainage. The procedure was apparently successful but sinusitis relapsed aft

A new imaging modality for intraoperative evaluation of sinus floor augmentation.

The aim of this report was to demonstrate the practicability of a new imaging modality, which allows three-dimensional intraoperative imaging and verification of bone-graft position, and to compare it to the currently available imaging systems. The ARCADIS Orbic 3D, a C-arm-based cone-beam computed tomography scanner developed for intraoperative imaging, was used to examine a previously augmented sinus floor, in order to verify the height and width of the augmentation and to determine whether any of the autogenous and synthetic bone-substitute mixture had penetrated the sinus membrane. Choice of graft material in relation to maxillary sinus width in internal sinus floor augmentation.

PURPOSE: When grafts with solely osteoinductive or osteoconductive effects are used in the maxillary sinus, the medial wall of the sinus membrane should be reflected to receive the vascular supply and the osteoconductive effect. Because the internal sinus floor augmentation is a blind technique, it is impossible to directly verify whether the medial sinus wall is reflected in the operation. The purpose of this study is to describe the modality of choice among the grafting materials and techniques in relation to the width of the maxillary sinus through preoperative planning and measuring in com

Experience of maxillary sinus floor augmentation in the presence of antral pseudocysts.

Sinus floor elevation is increasingly being used with implant placement procedures. However, certain surgical difficulties can develop, such as sinus membrane perforation, bleeding, anatomic variations, or some pathologies of the maxillary sinus. Maxillary antral pseudocysts are one of the most common benign pathologies of the maxillary sinus. Although some investigators have described the presence of this pathology as a contraindication, recent reports have demonstrated that pseudocysts of the maxillary sinus are not a contraindication for sinus augmentation. In these reports, maxillary sinus

Simplified Sinus Floor Augmentation: An Economical Approach Using a Modified Balloon Technique.

Longstanding partial edentulism in the posterior segment of the maxilla is a challenging treatment and typically involves extensive and invasive sinus floor augmentation. Various methods have been employed for sinus floor elevation, including the application of hydraulic pressure using the balloon technique. This case report describes a modified ballooning technique to elevate the sinus floor using a Foley catheter to apply the hydraulic pressure method to elevate the Schneiderian membrane prior to the placement of bone grafts and an endosseous implant in a 37-year-old male patient who present

Multiple Perforations of the Sinus Floor During Maxillary Sinus Floor Augmentation to Provide Access to the Bone Marrow Space: A Technical Report.

INTRODUCTION: Sinus floor augmentation is a routinely used surgical technique for increasing the bone height/volume of the atrophic posterior maxilla. Optimal integration of the implanted augmentation material within the newly formed bone will-at least partly-depend on adequate vascularization to ensure sufficient recruitment of osteoblast and osteoclast precursor cells. METHODS: The present technical note describes a modification intended to facilitate increased blood inflow into the augmented space. After preparation of the lateral window and elevation of the Schneiderian membrane, the cort
