What are the factors determining the probability of discovering a flea species (Siphonaptera)?

Our aim was to determine which of four variables (number of host species exploited by the parasite, taxonomic distinctness of these hosts, geographic range of the principal host, and year of description of this host) was the best predictor of description date of fleas. The study used previously published data on 297 flea species parasitic on 197 species of small mammals from 34 different regions of the Holarctic and one region from the Neotropics. We used both simple linear and multiple regressions to evaluate the relationships between the four predictor variables and the year of flea descript

The Fleas (Siphonaptera) in Iran: Diversity, Host Range, and Medical Importance.

BACKGROUND: Flea-borne diseases have a wide distribution in the world. Studies on the identity, abundance, distribution and seasonality of the potential vectors of pathogenic agents (e.g. Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis, and Rickettsia felis) are necessary tools for controlling and preventing such diseases outbreaks. The improvements of diagnostic tools are partly responsible for an easier detection of otherwise unnoticed agents in the ectoparasitic fauna and as such a good taxonomical knowledge of the potential vectors is crucial. The aims of this study were to make an exhaustive inve

Siphonaptera (Pulicidae) in dogs and cats of Colombia: Clinical and epidemiological aspects.

Flea infestation is a common worldwide problem, its effective control results in high costs and difficult implementation. During February to August 2007, an epidemiological study of Siphonaptera order in dogs and cats admitted at the University of Caldas-Colombia - Veterinary Hospital (UCVH), was carried out by corporal examination and recording epidemiological variables. Overall, 3698 fleas were collected from 140 dogs and 30 cats. Two main species were identified: Ctenocephalides felis (94.2%) and Pulex irritans (5.8%) and a single specimen of Xenopsylla cheopis were also collected. Owners a

Additional description of a new species of Tunga (Siphonaptera) from Ecuador.

A new species of chigoe flea belonging to the genus Tunga Jarocki, 1838 (Siphonaptera, Pulicidae, Tunginae), Tunga trimamillata, was recently described by Pampiglione et al. (2002). A better description and more details of the epidemiology of the flea are now presented. It is a species found in goats, pigs and cattle in Santa Isabel in Andean Ecuador. This new species differs from its most similar congener, Tunga penetrans (L., 1758), by several features, the most important of which are a) the presence on the anterior extremity of the gravid female of three rounded humps surrounding the head a

Mode of action of lufenuron on larval cat fleas (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae).

Adult cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché), were fed suboptimal in vitro concentrations of lufenuron in blood to allow hatching of flea larvae for cytological study. At concentrations of 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 ppm, larval hatch was 64, 15, and 4%, respectively. Larvae hatching from eggs laid by adults fed lufenuron at concentrations of 0.025, 0.08, or 0.125 ppm did not differ significantly from the control. However, many larvae from the 0.08-ppm group and higher concentrations died during the 1st instar. Examination of these larvae revealed that they were dying from desiccation caused by bl

Geographic patterns of functional and phylogenetic niche breadth in Holarctic fleas (Siphonaptera).

We studied geographic patterns of functional and phylogenetic niche breadth of 194 flea species. Niche breadth was measured as the functional and phylogenetic diversity and uniqueness of the assemblages of small mammal hosts exploited by these fleas. We asked (a) whether the relationships between niche breadth and geographic range size conform to the 'niche breadth hypothesis', predicting positive correlations, and (b) whether variation of niche breadth along the latitudinal position of geographic range conforms to the 'niche breadth-latitude hypothesis', predicting narrower niche breadth at lo

Current knowledge on fleas (Siphonaptera) associated with human plague transmission in Madagascar.

Fleas are ectoparasites of mammals and birds. Some species are known for their medical and veterinary importance. Particularly for humans and domestic animals, fleas are often merely nuisance species, but may also be disease vectors. Some well-known infectious diseases are transmitted from animals to humans by flea bites: murine typhus, spotted-fever, bartonelloses and plague. Particularly for plague, more than 80 species were reported vectors in the world and some are internationally renowned and have been the focus of studies over decades. In Madagascar, fleas are associated with two disease

Diversity of Flea (Siphonaptera) Parasites on Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in Romania.

Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes (L.)) are widespread across Europe, tolerant of synanthropic ecosystems, and susceptible to diseases potentially shared with humans and other animals. We describe flea fauna on red foxes in Romania, a large, ecologically diverse country, in part because fleas may serve as an indicator of the risk of spillover of vector-borne disease. We found 912 individual fleas of seven species on the 305 foxes assessed, for an infestation prevalence of 49.5%. Mean flea load per fox was 5.8 (range 0-44 fleas), and flea detections were most abundant in fall and early spring. Fleas inc

Investigation of Bartonella acquisition and transmission in Xenopsylla ramesis fleas (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae).

Bartonella are emerging and re-emerging pathogens affecting humans and a wide variety of animals including rodents. Horizontal transmission of Bartonella species by different hematophagous vectors is well acknowledged but vertical transmission (from mother to offspring) is questionable and was never explored in fleas. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the rodent flea, Xenopsylla ramesis, can acquire native Bartonella from wild rodents and transmit it transovarially. For this aim, Bartonella-free laboratory-reared X. ramesis fleas were placed on six naturally Bartonella-infected

[Relationship of the flea Citellophilus tesquorum altaicus (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae) with the plague agent].

Some aspects of relationships of the flea Citellophilus tesquorum altaicus and bacterium Yersinia pestis of two strains isolated from different parts of the Tuva natural plague focus were studied. Peculiarities of elimination and blood meal activity of fleas infected with two strains of the plague agent were not revealed. Differences in mortality and alimentary activity are considerably determined by the sex of insects. The ability of examined strains to form a proventriculus block was not identical in the strains examined. This ability was expressed higher in the strain I-3428, which originat

Frequency of block formation was studied in Xenopsylla cheopis infected with the triptophan-dependent and the typical strains of Yersinia pestis from the Mountain-Altai natural plague focus. It was shown that the rate of blocked males in comparison with that of females was statistically higher. In experiments with the triptophan-dependent strain the frequency of blocking in males was 40.9% and exceeded that in females at four times. The highest rate of blocked males was marked at 7-10th and that of females at 21st days. The tryptophan-dependent strain did not concede to the typical strain in t

Fleas (Siphonaptera) of cotton mice on a Georgia barrier island: a depauperate fauna.

From February 1993 through October 1994, 382 cotton mice Peromyscus gossypinus were live-trapped and examined for fleas on St. Catherines Island, Liberty County, Georgia. Orchopeas leucopus was the only species of flea collected, with an overall prevalence of 27% and a mean intensity of 3.8. This flea was more abundant on cotton mice during the cooler months, with peak infestation indices recorded in March 1993 and in January 1994. Five species of fleas (Polygenis gwyni, Stenoponia americana, Ctenophthalmus pseudagyrtes, Peromyscopsylla scotti, and O. leucopus) were collected from 29 cotton mi

The fleas of wild and commensal small mammals, domestic animals (dogs, cats) and free-living flea forms in houses have been collected in plague nidi of Tay Nguyen plate, Dak-Lak province, Vietnam. Pulex irritans, Ctenocephalides felis felis, Ct. felis orientis were found in the houses on dogs, cats and on the ground floor. Commensal rats in populated areas were infested by Xenopsylla cheopis and rarely by Lentistivalius klossi. The agricultural zone was inhabited by both home and wild animals such as commensal, savannah and forest-dwelling small mammals. The flea fauna of this zone is presente

Myth or truth: investigation of the jumping ability of Tunga penetrans (Siphonaptera: Tungidae).

Female sand fleas (Tunga penetrans Linnaeus, 1758, Siphonaptera: Tungidae) cause a severe parasitic skin disease known as tungiasis. T. penetrans is a small flea, measuring less than 1 mm in length. The females of this species burrow into the skin of human and animal hosts and mostly affect the feet. This has led to the anecdotal assumption that T. penetrans, unlike its relatives in the Siphonaptera family, would have a limited jumping ability potentially not reaching higher body parts. However, there is no data supporting this. This study evaluated the jumping capabilities of T. penetrans for

The first mitogenome of the genus Amphalius (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae) and its phylogenetic implications.

Amphalius spirataenius belongs to Arthropoda, Insecta, Siphonaptera, Ceratophylloidea, Ceratophyllinae, Amphalius. Only 2 species from the subfamily Ceratophyllinae have been sequenced for mitogenomes to date. The genus Amphalius mitogenome research was still blank. The A. spirataenius mitogenome was determined, annotated and analysed for the first time in this study. The 14 825 bp long genome has the typical metazoan of 37 genes with insect ancestral genome arrangement pattern. There was no significant difference in codon usage of 13 protein-coding genes: UUA, UCU, GUU, ACU and GCU were the m

Surface ultrastructure of the eggs of Malacopsylla grossiventris and Phthiropsylla agenoris (Siphonaptera: Malacopsyllidae).

The fleas of the Malacopsyllidae are known only by their adults. In this study, we describe the eggs of Malacopsylla grossiventris and Phthiropsylla agenoris and compare their surface ultrastructure using scanning electron microscopy. Eggs of both flea species are similar in their general appearance, i.e., the presence of disks and absence of lateral aeropyles, but they differ in size, texture of the surface, and number of micropyles and aeropyles. In addition, the eggs of M. grossiventris and P. agenoris are larger (719-800 µm) than most of the flea eggs known (<600 µm), and the length/width

Reproductive activity of Synosternus cleopatrae (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) in relation to host factors.

Reproductive activity of Synosternus cleopatrae (Rothschild) infesting Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi Thomas was studied in a natural setting in Israel. Rodents were trapped and measured (weight and length), their sex was identified, and their reproductive status estimated. Their ectoparasites were removed, and fleas were dissected and their oocytes measured. Two indices of flea reproductive activity were analyzed: "reproductive status," which distinguished between gravid and nongravid females, and "reproductive intensity," which was estimated as the sum over the two largest oocytes of the produ
