Systematic implications of brain morphology in potamotrygonidae (Chondrichthyes: Myliobatiformes).

The gross brain morphology, brain proportions, and position of cranial nerves in all four genera (Potamotrygon, Plesiotrygon, Paratrygon, and Heliotrygon) and 11 of the species of the Neotropical stingray family Potamotrygonidae were studied to provide new characters that may have a bearing on internal potamotrygonid systematics. The brain was also studied in four other stingray (Myliobatiformes) genera (Hexatrygon, Taeniura, Dasyatis, and Gymnura) to provide a more inclusive phylogenetic context for the interpretation of features of the brain in potamotrygonids. Our results indicate, based on

Enterolith with a bonefish spine nidus in a Brazilian cownose ray Rhinoptera brasiliensis (Müller & Henle) (Myliobatiformes: Rhinopteridae).

An adult female Brazilian cownose ray (Rhinoptera brasiliensis), housed in Ubatuba Aquarium died after loss of appetite period. During necropsy, an enterolith was discovered partially obstructing the intestinal lumen. Examination of the enterolith revealed a bonefish spine nidus. Enterolithiasis has been linked to multiple factors including diet, genetics, alkaline intestinal environments and, as in this particular case, the ingestion and retention of foreign bodies. The composition of this enterolith from a cownose ray was primarily monohydrocalcite. This short communication, apparently the f

Survey of total mercury and methylmercury levels in edible fish from the Adriatic Sea.

Total mercury and methylmercury concentrations were measured in the muscle tissue of different fish species from the Adriatic Sea to ascertain whether the concentrations exceeded the maximum level fixed by the European Commission. Large species-dependent variability was observed. The highest total mercury mean concentrations were in benthic (0.20-0.76 microg g(-1) wet wt) and demersal fish (0.22-0.73 microg g(-1) wet wt), while pelagic species showed the lowest levels (0.09-0.23 microg g(-1) wet wt). In 15% of frost fish, in 42% of skate and in 30% of angler fish samples total mercury concentr

Dangerous Measures: A Case Report and Review of Motoro Ray Envenomation.

Aquatic envenomations may cause severe tissue injury, neurologic morbidity, and even mortality among those whose leisure and/or occupational activities expose them to marine and freshwater animals. The Motoro ray, or Potamotrygon motoro (also known as an ocellate river stingray) is endemic to freshwater tributaries throughout Brazil, and is a frequent source of severe envenoming of local fisherman and those residing near waterways. Local wound management including immersion in warm water, wound cleaning and debridement, as well as antibiotics are mainstays of treatment, as are local anesthetic

New species of Guidus Ivanov, 2006 (Cestoda: Phyllobothriidea) from Bathyraja magellanica (Philippi) from the Patagonian Continental Shelf of Argentina.

Specimens representing two new species of Guidus Ivanov, 2006 were collected from the Magellan skate (Bathyraja magellanica [Philippi]) in the Patagonian Continental Shelf of Argentina, Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Guidus francoi sp. n. and Guidus magellanicus sp. n. differ from their congeners by a particular combination of features, including type of bothridia, worm length, number of testes, and distribution of vitelline follicles. Guidus francoi sp. n. is distinguished from G. magellanicus sp. n. by having fewer proglottids, fewer testes and a higher ratio between the cirrus sac length and

Cutaneous malignant melanoma in a Haller's round ray Urobatis halleri.

Multiple black raised nodular masses were noted on the dorsal surface of an adult male Haller's round ray Urobatis halleri. Biopsy of 2 masses was performed, and histopathology revealed proliferative sheets of melanocytes exhibiting mild anisocytosis and anisokaryosis, supporting a diagnosis of malignant melanoma. Approximately 2 mo following the biopsy procedure, the round ray became acutely anorexic and was found dead in its enclosure. A full necropsy was performed, and tissues were submitted for histopathology. The black raised nodular masses again exhibited histologic features of a melanom

Serum fluoride level and fluoride content of enameloid.

We investigated diverse groups of fish species to determine whether the fluorine (F) contents of the dental hard tissues were related to baseline serum F levels. Serum samples, enameloid, dentin, ganoid/enamel, and bone were analyzed for F by either electron microprobe or wet chemistry. Species were categorized into two groups based on the F content of the enameloid. One group contained greater than 2.6 wt% F in enameloid, whereas the other group had less than 0.45 wt% F in enameloid. The dentin and bone from all species (or, in skates, the cartilage), as well as the ganoid/enamel layer of a H

Anisakid nematodes in skates (Chondrichthyes: Rajiformes) along a depth gradient: do bathymetry and host size influence the presence of zoonotic parasites?

Some species of Anisakidae are known to cause human anisakidosis due to ingestion of seafood containing larvae L3. Although cartilaginous fishes are infrequently reported as hosts for anisakids, they could play a role in their transmission to definitive hosts. The occurrence and level of infestation by anisakids on 18 species of skates were analysed, based on a sample of 676 specimens. A total of 1692 worms were recorded; the morphologic and genetic analysis of mDNA cox2 gene, confirmed the presence of Anisakis pegreffii, A. berlandi and Phocanema cattani, whose presence and burdens varied amo

A bizarre Eocene dasyatoid batomorph (Elasmobranchii, Myliobatiformes) from the Bolca Lagerstätte (Italy) reveals a new, extinct body plan for stingrays.

In the last few years, the detailed revision of the Eocene cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes) from the Bolca Lagerstätte (Italy) has provided new insights into the fish biodiversity of the western Tethys. The morphological analysis of three previously undescribed specimens from the Pesciara deposit of Bolca revealed the existence of a new stingray taxon, †Lessiniabatis aenigmatica gen. et sp. nov., which is unique among the myliobatiform batoids in having the following unique combination of characters: low number of vertebrae posterior to the pelvic girdle (65-68); thoracolumbar synarcual e

Neogene sharks and rays from the Brazilian 'Blue Amazon'.

The lower Miocene Pirabas Formation in the North of Brazil was deposited under influence of the proto-Amazon River and is characterized by large changes in the ecological niches from the early Miocene onwards. To evaluate these ecological changes, the elasmobranch fauna of the fully marine, carbonate-rich beds was investigated. A diverse fauna with 24 taxa of sharks and rays was identified with the dominant groups being carcharhiniforms and myliobatiforms. This faunal composition is similar to other early Miocene assemblages from the proto-Carribbean bioprovince. However, the Pirabas Formation

Novelty and phylogenetic affinities of a new family of tapeworms (Cestoda: Rhinebothriidea) from endangered sawfish and guitarfish.

The parasites of hosts of conservation concern are often poorly known. This is the case with the iconic group of elasmobranchs known as the sawfish of the genus Pristis, all four species of which are considered as Endangered or Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN, Switzerland). Examination of cestodes from three species of sawfish (Pristis pristis, Pristis clavata, and Pristis zijsron) in Australia and one of their close relatives, the also critically endangered widenose guitarfish, Glaucostegus obtusus, in India, collected over the past 25 years,

A mouthless late-term coach whipray Himantura uarnak embryo (Elasmobranchii, Dasyatidae) has implications for our understanding of matrotrophy in chondrichthyans.

Maternal nutrient provisioning occurs in most live-bearing chondrichthyan lineages. It is particularly conspicuous in the Myliobatiformes, whereby the endometrium secretes a nutrient-rich histotroph that is utilized by the developing embryo. The occurrence of a deformed and mouthless, late-term myliobatiform embryo is described here, demonstrating that the direct, oral ingestion of histotroph is not obligatory in these animals.

Opportunistic sightings of manta rays on Brazil's Amazon Coast.

Little is known about the ecology and distribution of mobulid rays along Brazil's extensive coastline. Here we report opportunistic sightings of manta rays (Mobula cf. birostris) in the Brazilian Amazon estuaries and the Great Amazon Reef System. These sightings consist of manta ray individuals stranded in tide pools, caught in artisanal fisheries, and footage obtained with a submersible. Future investigations on the spatial, temporal, and environmental drivers of manta rays' distribution on the northern Brazilian coast and the threats posed by fishing gear are warranted.

Three new species of Acanthobothrium Blanchard, 1848 (Cestoda:<br />Onchoproteocephalidea) in Stingrays (Dasyatidae) from the Pacific coast in Mexico.

Three new species of Acanthobothrium Blanchard, 1848 (Onchoproteocephalidea: Onchobothriidae) are described from Pacific coastal waters of Mexico. Based on four criteria for categorization of species of Acanthobothrium, the three new species belong to Category 2 species, characterized by their total length (< 15 mm), number of proglottids (< 50) and testes (<80), and with asymmetrical ovary. Acanthobothrium ppdeleoni n. sp. from diamond stingray Hypanus dipterurus (Jordan Gilbert) is differentiated from congeners by a combination of characters including total length of the whole worms, size of

Spermatological characters of Dictyocotyle coeliaca Nybelin, a unique endoparasitic monogenean from the body cavity of the ray Amblyraja radiata (Elasmobranchii: Rajidae), was investigated by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy for the first time. The process of the spermatozoon formation begins with the appearance of the differentiation zone which contains two centrioles. Subsequently developed two free flagella rotate to lie parallel before their fusing. After fusion, both the mitochondrion and nucleus migrate alongside the axonemes. Spermatids are formed within parallel c

Fgf signalling is required for gill slit formation in the skate, Leucoraja erinacea.

The gill slits of fishes develop from an iterative series of pharyngeal endodermal pouches that contact and fuse with surface ectoderm on either side of the embryonic head. We find in the skate (Leucoraja erinacea) that all gill slits form via a stereotypical sequence of epithelial interactions: 1) endodermal pouches approach overlying surface ectoderm, with 2) focal degradation of ectodermal basement membranes preceding endoderm-ectoderm contact; 3) endodermal pouches contact and intercalate with overlying surface ectoderm, and finally 4) perforation of a gill slit occurs by epithelial remode
