Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) commonly suffer from neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD). Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) offers an alternative in the treatment of detrusor overactivity in patients with NLUTD. We report the cases of three patients with NLUTD due to SCI who received SNM. Due to treatment success, all patients could resume skiing. All suffered from skiing accidents, leading to a decreased effectiveness of SNM. Subsequent evaluation revealed a defect of the impulse generator (IPG) and/or dislocation of the electrodes. Reprogramming or replacement of the IPG or

We retrospectively reviewed alpine skiing injuries at a destination ski resort during three seasons to characterize the incidence and types of shoulder injuries. A total of 3451 injuries in 3247 patients were reviewed. The overall injury rate was 4.44 injuries per 1000 skier-days. Injuries to the upper extremity represented 29.1% (N = 1004) of all alpine ski injuries. Injuries involving the shoulder complex (393 injuries in 350 patients) accounted for 39.1% of upper extremity injuries and 11.4% of all alpine skiing injuries. The rate of shoulder injury was 0.51 injuries per 1000 skier-days. Pa

Grade III rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb is a common injury, especially in skiers. If not treated appropriately, it can lead to symptoms that are quite disabling. The historical methods of diagnosis and treatment have been outlined, and a protocol to accurately establish the diagnosis was suggested. Specifically, vigorous clinical stress testing should not be performed, so that adductor interposition is not created by the testing. Instead, the metacarpophalangeal joint arthrogram is recommended to establish the correct diagnosis, thereby allowing appropriate treatment to

PURPOSE: Roller skiing is the primary sport-specific training and testing mode during pre-competition periods for cross-country skiers, biathletes, and Nordic combined athletes. The present study aimed to compare the kinematics between uphill roller skiing and on-snow skiing using the V2 sub-technique.
METHODS: In a cross-over design, nine well-trained male skiers performed short trials (< 40 s) at constant inclination (8.0°), speed (3.0 m‧s-1), and controlled rolling/gliding friction on asphalt (in the fall), on the treadmill (in the fall and winter), and during on-snow skiing (in the winter

The aims of the current study were to analyze whether specific roller skiing tests and cycle length are determinants of youth cross-country (XC) skiing performance, and to evaluate sex specific differences by applying non-invasive diagnostics. Forty-nine young XC skiers (33 boys; 13.8 ± 0.6 yrs and 16 girls; 13.4 ± 0.9 yrs) performed roller skiing tests consisting of both shorter (50 m) and longer durations (575 m). Test results were correlated with on snow XC skiing performance (PXC) based on 3 skating and 3 classical distance competitions (3 to 6 km). The main findings of the current study w

We report a case of intrarectal tear and hemorrhage after a fall while water skiing. The injury resulted from rectal douche, or jet enema, which is dangerous because of the high pressure of the water jets forced into the rectum. The patient, a middle-aged woman, had colonoscopy, which revealed a deep rectal laceration. During subsequent colostomy, a full-thickness laceration and an extensive pelvic and retroperitoneal hematoma with some free blood were found. The patient's recovery was uneventful, and she subsequently had reanastomosis of her colostomy. We recommend protective apparel to preve

In the Innsbruck University Clinic for Traumatology during the years 1978-1985, altogether 17,999 patients received initial treatment for injuries incurred through Alpine skiing. 3240, or 18% of these injuries were trauma to the hand. The most frequently injured area was the thumb, with 1995, or 61.6% of the cases. The most common hand injury in skiing is the socalled "ski thumb", the lesion of the ulnar ligament of the metacarpal-phalangeal joint. Finger injuries accounted for 262 cases, or 8%. The capsule-ligament lesions predominated, especially the palmar capsule lesion of the proximal int

The objective of our study was to compare injuries sustained by a large group of children to those of injured adults and a control population of skiers selected from the Sugarbush North ski area in northern Vermont. We reviewed all 3182 injuries which occurred over nine ski seasons (1972 to 1973 through 1980 to 1981) at Sugarbush North. Six hundred and ninety-six (22%) of these injuries occurred in children 16 years of age or younger. For all injuries combined, those under 11 years of age had the same rate of injury as adults. Adolescents had a higher injury rate. Foot and ankle injuries were

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop a musculoskeletal-environment interaction model to reconstruct the dynamic-interaction process in skiing.
METHODS: This study established a skier-ski-snow interaction model that integrated a 3D full-body musculoskeletal model, a flexible ski model, a ski boot model, a ski-snow contact model, and an air resistance model. An experimental method was developed to collect kinematic and kinetic data using inertial measurement units, GPS, and plantar pressure measurement insoles, which were cost-effective and capable of capturing motion in large-scale field condi

BACKGROUND: Though the injury patterns of the lower extremities in skiing have changed since 1970, tibial fractures remain daily work of hospitals near ski slopes. A lot of medical studies have analysed the relevance of well adjusted bindings of the common lesions of the knee joint ligaments. However the influence of the flexibility of the ski boot and the injury pattern has been neglected.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: 49 tibial fractures have been analysed in a hospital near a large ski resort in the alpes. All fractures occurred during alpine skiing. The type of the fracture, according to the AO-cl

This study of ski jumping includes three areas of research: Wind tunnel measurements with world class athletes in various flight positions, field measurements during the World Championships in Ski Flying 1994 in Planica (Slovenia) and a highly reliable mapping of ski jumping to a computable simulation model. The results explain the effects of equipment, flight style changes, the reason for the enhanced tumbling risk and high gust sensitivity observed. Consequences can be drawn for changes to the FIS regulations, the design of jumping hills and training methods. The internationally induced anor

A retrospective analysis was conducted on injury statistics compiled over 12 seasons, from 1982 to 1993 (2.55 million skier-days), at a Wyoming ski resort. The population at risk was determined by ticket sales per year. A total of 9749 skiing injuries was indexed by anatomic region and severity according to diagnosis on initial evaluation. Injury rates were then analyzed as a function of time. The injury rate remained constant at 3.7 injuries per 1000 skier-days during the 12 seasons. The rate of lower extremity to upper extremity injury decreased from 4:1 to 2:1 during the study period (P < 0

Oxygen consumption [(VO2) in ml.kg-1.min-1], blood lactate concentration ([La] in mM) and dynamic friction of the skis on snow [(F) in N] were measured in six athletes skiing on a level track at different speeds [(v) in m.min-1] and using different methods of propulsion. The VO2 increased with v and F, the latter depending mostly on snow temperature, as did [La]. The VO2 was very much affected by the skiing technique. Multiple regression equations gave the following results: with diagonal stride (DS), VO2 = -23.09 + 0.189 v + 0.62 N; with double pole (DP), VO2 = -30.95 + 0.192 v + 0.51 N; and

The purpose of this study was to determine the occurrence and type of traumatic dental injuries after maxillofacial injuries as a result of Alpine skiing. During an 8-year period (from January 1991 to December 1998) 7600 patients with facial injuries were registered at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Innsbruck, Austria. Of 784 patients with skiing-related facial injuries (524 males, 260 females) 326 (41.6%) sustained injuries to 639 teeth. The age groups predominantly affected were between 7 and 32 years. Luxation injuries occurred in 338 (53%) teeth, fractures

Two cases of penetrating craniocerebral injuries which occurred during alpine skiing were presented. The first was a 25-year-old lady whose calvarium was impaled with a ski pole in the anterior part of the orbital roof following an interpersonal collision. She was brought to the Critical Care and Emergency Center, Iwate Medical University. On admission, her consciousness was clear and a stab wound was observed in her upper eyelid. Initial CT showed bone fracture of the anterior part of the orbital roof and a small intracerebral hematoma associated with bone fragment was revealed. Immediate rem

The sport of snow skiing by the physically disabled, which originated in Europe in 1935 and first received attention in the United States in the 1940s, is reviewed in terms of opportunities available, instructions, adaptive equipment necessary, and benefits provided. Persons with a wide variety of disabilities (such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, hemiplegia, amputation, blindness, spina bifida, and muscular dystrophy) can participate. Accordingly, a wide range of adaptive equipment is available--including outrigger skis, flip-skis, canting wedges, ski bras, "toe spr

Cross-country ski racing has evolved rapidly in recent years. Of particular interest has been the development and proliferation of the faster freestyle or skating techniques. In spite of changes in technique and equipment, the fact that elite cross-country ski racers have some of the highest aerobic power values reported for endurance athletes has not changed. Successful ski racers have higher percentages of slow twitch muscle fibres and higher anaerobic thresholds, but lower anaerobic power scores than Alpine skiers. Cross-country skiers are also lean, as are distance runners. The absolute bo
