Dermal enhancement: bacterial products on intact skin induce and augment organ-specific autoimmune disease.

The skin is both an essential barrier for host defense and an important organ of immunity. In this study, we show that the application of cholera toxin to intact mouse skin induces and enhances autoimmune diseases affecting organs at distant anatomic sites, whereas its administration by the mucosal route has been reported to have the opposite effect. First, the CNS autoantigen myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein 35-55, when applied repeatedly with cholera toxin to the intact skin of healthy C57BL/6 mice, induced relapsing paralysis with demyelinating immunopathologic features similar to multip

A Case-Control Study in Primary Care Settings on the Roles of Dermatoscopy in Infectious Diseases Affecting the Skin, Part 1: Viral and Bacterial Infections.

We aimed to investigate roles of dermatoscopy in skin infections, with Part 1 of our report covering viral and bacterial infections. A case-control study was conducted on the medical records of all patients with skin infections who had had dermatoscopy performed over a period of 3 months. Our control participants were all patients with skin infections in two 3-month periods, and sex-pair-matched patients with the same infections, who had not undergone dermatoscopy. Records of 523 study subjects were analyzed. Our first new finding was that dermatoscopy brought forward the diagnosis of herpes z

Neuro-Behçets/neuro-Sweets disease presents simultaneously with severe tonsillitis, and features mimicking bacterial meningitis with skin lesions.

The patient was hospitalized due to rapidly undulant fever and sore throat. Empirical antibiotic therapy was started, however, headache also occurred. Lumbar puncture disclosed polynuclear leukocyte-predominant pleocytosis indicating that the patient suffered from bacterial meningitis. The antibiotics therapy was increased, however, consciousness became impaired and erythema multiforme-like skin lesions appeared. T2-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging showed high signal intensity in the brainstem. HLA testing revealed B54 and Cw1. The patient presented futures of Behçets disease at the s

Features of the Skin Microbiota in Common Inflammatory Skin Diseases.

Many relatively common chronic inflammatory skin diseases manifest on the face (seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, acne, perioral/periorificial dermatitis, periocular dermatitis, etc.), thereby significantly impairing patient appearance and quality of life. Given the yet unexplained pathogenesis and numerous factors involved, these diseases often present therapeutic challenges. The term "microbiome" comprises the totality of microorganisms (microbiota), their genomes, and environmental factors in a particular environment. Changes in human skin microbiota composition and/or functionality are belie

Exploring the therapeutic potential of topical probiotics in dermatological diseases: a comprehensive review of clinical studies.

The gastrointestinal tract may contribute to the regulation of systemic inflammation and skin diseases due to the balance between the pathogenic, opportunistic, and beneficial bacterial species it contains. External supplementation of beneficial bacteria, besides its known positive effect in the treatment of digestive system diseases, also has different favorable effects such as accelerated wound healing, suppression of inflammation, lower infection risk, and reduced antibiotic requirement. It has been reported that oral use of probiotics may be effective in the treatment of skin diseases such

Bacteria and the skin: clinical practice and therapy update.

Any doctor using antibiotics should be aware of the increasing worldwide problem with multiresistant bacteria, with the majority of hospital-based infections in some countries being caused by these bacteria. Proper use of antibiotics is therefore mandatory for any physician, including for dermatologists, who treat bacterial infections of the skin. Detailed knowledge is needed of when to use topical versus systemic antibiotics, and for how long such treatments should be given. Besides the clinical symptoms of bacterial infections and treatment guidelines, an increased awareness has focused on t

[Antibiotic therapy in skin diseases].

Antibiotics are used for systemic and topical skin diseases treatment, taking advantage of their antiseptic, bacteriostatic and also their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating properties. In case of localized external skin layers infections, a topical treatment is adequate. In case of widespread and deeper infections a systemic treatment is needed. The latter dermatological diseases are mostly treated by beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillins and cefalosporins) macrolides and tetracycline. In topical treatment mostly erythromycin, clindamycin, mupirocyne and fusidic acid are used. Most common

A practical approach to common skin problems in returning travellers.

Skin diseases are the third most common cause of morbidity in returning travellers and may affect 8% of travellers during travel. Classic tropical diseases account for one quarter and the remainder are cosmopolitan diseases. The majority are of infectious origin, and of these bacterial infections are the most common and lead to the most hospitalisations. The ten most frequently encountered diagnoses comprise four classical tropical infections (cutaneous larva migrans, myiasis, tungiasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis) and six nontropical diseases (bacterial skin infections, arthropod bites, aller

Differentiation of keratinocytes or exposure to type 2 cytokines diminishes S. aureus internalization.

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of skin and soft tissue infections. Colonization by this bacterium is increased in individuals with chronic cutaneous diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and bullous pemphigoid. The greater abundance of S. aureus on the skin of subjects with atopic dermatitis in particular has been linked to recurrent cutaneous infections. The primary cell type of the epidermal layer of the skin is the keratinocyte, and it is thought that S. aureus internalized in keratinocytes associates with an increased incidence of skin infections. This study addresses wh

Bacterial infections: uncommon presentations.

The essence of dermatology is morphology. The most important instrument in the practice of dermatology has always been, and still is, the naked eye; however, "We see only what we are ready to see, what we have been taught to see" (Jean Martin Charcot). Although most practitioners will easily correctly diagnose common bacterial skin diseases (such as cellulitis, erysipelas, impetigo, etc), only a trained and updated dermatologist will recognize the unusual forms and rare variants of these diseases. Bacterial skin diseases are sometimes acute and life-threatening. The mortality rates from necrot

Multi-omics analyses reveal host-microbe interactions in atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis (PSO) are chronic inflammatory skin diseases that impose substantial physical and psychological burdens. Although fungal-bacterial balance is important for skin immune homeostasis, the role of the skin mycobiome and its interaction with bacterial communities and host immunity in these diseases remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: To characterize alterations in the skin mycobiome and its interactions with bacterial communities and host immune responses in AD and PSO. METHODS: Adult patients with chronic AD, plaque-type PSO and healthy volunte

The bacterial flora of the skin surface following routine MAL-PDT.

Photodynamic therapy using methylated 5-aminolevulate (MAL-PDT) appears to have an effect on non-neoplastic skin diseases, for example acne vulgaris and rosacea, for which antibiotics are sometimes used, and a possible antibiotic effect of PDT has previously been suggested. It does, however, also cause local immunosuppression and post-treatment barrier defects, which may promote infection. At the same time, PDT-induced therapeutic skin damage is sometimes confused with secondary bacterial infection by non-dermatologists. The possible changes in bacterial flora associated with MAL-PDT were ther

The feline skin microbiota: The bacteria inhabiting the skin of healthy and allergic cats.

BACKGROUND: The skin is inhabited by a multitude of microorganisms. An imbalance of these microorganisms is associated with disease, however, the causal relationship between skin microbiota and disease remains unknown. To describe the cutaneous bacterial microbiota of cats and determine whether bacterial dysbiosis occurs on the skin of allergic cats, the skin surfaces on various regions of 11 healthy cats and 10 allergic cats were sampled. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Genomic DNA was extracted from skin swabs and sequenced using primers that target the V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA.

[Skin diseases in returning travelers: etiologies according to clinical presentation].

Dermatoses are one of the three most common causes of health problem in returning travelers. These dermatoses include infections, environmental diseases (sunburns, arthropod-related reactions) and superficial injuries. Skin infections are the most common cause of consultation after return. They include bacterial infections of cosmopolitan origin (pyoderma, abcess, cellulites) and tropical diseases (hookworm-related cutaneous cutaneous larva migrans, localized cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis, myiasis...). Travelers abroad must be appropriately vaccinated against tetanus and specifically inst
