Skin Autofluorescence in Systemic Sclerosis Is Related to the Disease and Vascular Damage: A Cross-Sectional Analytic Study of Comparative Groups.

Skin autofluorescence (AF), a relatively simple and time saving procedure, measures the accumulation of advanced glycation end (AGE) products. The importance in autoimmune rheumatic diseases, particularly, systemic sclerosis (SSc), has not been evaluated yet. The aim of our study was to examine the skin AF in the context of SSc patients and to analyse the relations between skin AF and other surrogate measures of atherosclerosis. Forty-seven patients with SSc and 47 healthy volunteers were included in this study as controls. Patients and controls underwent common carotid artery wall assessment,

Skin capillary circulation is more impaired in the toes of diabetic than non-diabetic patients with peripheral vascular disease.

The aim of the present study was to investigate if diabetes negatively influences the skin microvascular reactivity in the toes of patients with peripheral vascular disease (PVD). Twenty healthy subjects, 20 diabetic, and 20 non-diabetic patients with PVD participated. One foot in each subject was investigated. The patient groups were matched for age, sex, and toe pressure. The capillary blood cell velocity in the nailfold of the great toe was investigated by videophotometric capillaroscopy, and the total skin microcirculation within the same area by laser Doppler fluxmetry. Capillary blood ce

The value of skin temperature measurements in forecasting the healing of a below-knee amputation for end-stage ischaemia of the leg in peripheral vascular disease.

In order to forecast the healing of a Burgess type below-knee amputation the skin temperature of the leg has been studied before operation in 39 instances using infra-red thermography in a 26 degrees C environment. Healing bore no relation to the mean skin temperature of the calf or that of the skin at the site of the anterior incision. However, when the skin temperature at the site of the incision for the long posterior flap was greater than 30.4 degrees C or when the ratio of the temperatures at the posterior and anterior incision sites (P/A) was greater than 0.98 healing was significantly m

Persistent release of IL-1s from skin is associated with systemic cardio-vascular disease, emaciation and systemic amyloidosis: the potential of anti-IL-1 therapy for systemic inflammatory diseases.

The skin is an immune organ that contains innate and acquired immune systems and thus is able to respond to exogenous stimuli producing large amount of proinflammatory cytokines including IL-1 and IL-1 family members. The role of the epidermal IL-1 is not limited to initiation of local inflammatory responses, but also to induction of systemic inflammation. However, association of persistent release of IL-1 family members from severe skin inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis, epidermolysis bullosa, atopic dermatitis, blistering diseases and desmoglein-1 deficiency syndrome with diseases in s

Evaluation of tissue accumulation levels of advanced glycation end products by skin autofluorescence: A novel marker of vascular complications in high-risk patients for cardiovascular disease.

A non-enzymatic reaction between reducing sugars and the amino groups of proteins, lipids and nucleic acids is known as the "Maillard reaction". The reactions have progressed in a normal aging process and at an accelerated rate under hyperglycemic, inflammatory, and/or oxidative stress conditions, thus leading to the formation and accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Cross-linking modification of organic matrix proteins such as collagen by AGEs not only leads to an increase in vascular and myocardial stiffness, but also deteriorates structural integrity and physiological fun

Acral manifestations of paraneoplastic and collagen vascular diseases.

The skin often signals a number of systemic disease, making skin findings of paramount significance. Paraneoplastic diseases and collagen vascular diseases are vitally important illnesses. Paraneoplastic diseases and collagen vascular diseases may also occur with many different acral skin findings. Paraneoplastic skin diseases, associated with some cancers, are by definition nonmalignant skin disorders. These diseases can occur before, simultaneously, or after the diagnosis of cancer. Acral paraneoplastic diseases include acanthosis nigricans maligna, acquired pachydermatoglyphia, acrokeratosi

Cross Disease Single-Cell Meta-Analysis Deciphers Conserved Pan-Inflammatory Circuits and Divergent Endothelial Rewiring in Inflammatory Skin Pathogenesis.

Skin vascular endothelial cells (VECs) play a crucial role in regulating vascular function, orchestrating local immune responses, and contributing to the progression of immune-mediated inflammatory skin disorders. Despite their importance, the shared and distinct features of VECs across various inflammatory skin conditions remain poorly understood. We analysed single-cell data from 94 skin samples, encompassing healthy individuals and patients with psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and lupus erythematosus and established a comprehensive VEC atlas spanning multiple inflammatory skin diseases. Immunofluorescence on skeletal muscle and skin biopsy specimens in muscle diseases.

A series of 110 muscle and 40 skin biopsy specimens were examined using direct immunofluorescence aiming to identify features that may differentiate the myopathy of connective tissue disease from other muscle diseases. The skeletal muscle fluorescence was positive in 75% of the patients with muscle diseases. The sarcolemmal staining was higher in mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. Fiber and vascular staining occurred in all muscle diseases, except in cases of myasthenia. Our results showed that 42% of patients with polymyositis and 43% of patients with peripheral motor neuron diseases have vascu

[Skin symptoms in neurological diseases].

The considerable variety of diseases involving both the skin and the peripheral or central nervous system is due to the developmental relationship between skin and nervous system. Diseases of the nervous system resulting in skin changes comprise disorders of nails, hair, sweat and sebaceous glands as well as neuropathic ulcers in various manifestations. Neurocutaneous syndromes (phacomatoses) are nevoid systemic diseases comprising neurofibromatoses, tuberose sclerosis, ataxia telangiectasia, nevoid angiomatoses and other neurocutaneous disorders. Polytopic disorders of the skin and nervous sy

[Dermoscopy of inflammatory skin diseases].

The dermoscope was initially used in dermatology to distinguish between pigmented and nonpigmented tumors, both benign and malignant. Over the last two decades, however, the spectrum of dermoscopy has broadened and its role in the diagnosis of nonneoplastic diseases, in particular inflammatory skin diseases, has become increasingly important. In the diagnosis of general and inflammatory skin diseases, it is recommended that dermoscopic evaluation should be performed after clinical examination. In the following summary, the dermoscopic features of the most common inflammatory skin diseases are

[Dermal Clues to Systemic Diseases].

Many systemic diseases go along with dermal involvement. Only a few of systemic diseases show characteristic skin derangements directly leading to the diagnosis of the underlying disease. Ten of these entities are described within this article. Some of these are autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematodes, dermatomyositis or the anti-synthetase-syndrome. Others are genetic diseases with benign or malignant neoplasias (Peutz-Jeghers-syndrome, neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis, Birt-Hogg-Dubé-syndrome, Cowden-syndrome). Other genetically based diseases with typical skin manifes
