Mechanical positional information guides the self-organized development of a polygonal network of creases in the skin of mammalian noses.

The glabrous skin of the rhinarium (naked nose) of many mammalian species exhibits a polygonal pattern of grooves that retain physiological fluid, thereby keeping their nose wet and, among other effects, facilitating the collection of chemosensory molecules. Here, we perform volumetric imaging of whole-mount rhinaria from sequences of embryonic and juvenile cows, dogs, and ferrets. We demonstrate that rhinarial polygonal domains are not placode-derived skin appendages but arise through a self-organized mechanical process consisting of the constrained growth and buckling of the epidermal basal

[Physiologic hyperpigmentation on darker skin].

Many, even common, normal variations and nuances of skin of color are less frequently described or often misinterpreted as pathological. Recognizing these physiologic changes is gaining relevance in our increasingly diverse patient population and enables the physician to encourage the acceptance by the patients as well as to manage our resources wisely. Therefore, we explain common hyperpigmentation on dark skin such as demarcation lines, mucosal hyperpigmentation, melanonychia striata, and circumscribed dermal melanocytosis. The aim of this article is to facilitate the classification of these

Effect of Skin Barrier on Atopic Dermatitis.

The skin acts as the body's primary physical and immune barrier, maintaining the skin microbiome and providing a physical, chemical, and immune barrier. A disrupted skin barrier plays a critical role in the onset and advancement of inflammatory skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (AD) and contact dermatitis. This narrative review outlines the relationship between AD and skin barrier function in preparation for the search for possible markers for the treatment of AD.

Quantifying skin sensitivity caused by mechanical insults: A review.

BACKGROUND: Skin sensitivity (SS) is a commonly occurring response to a range of stimuli, including environmental conditions (e.g., sun exposure), chemical irritants (e.g., soaps and cosmetics), and mechanical forces (e.g., while shaving). From both industry and academia, many efforts have been taken to quantify the characteristics of SS in a standardised manner, but the study is hindered by the lack of an objective definition. METHODS: A review of the scientific literature regarding different parameters attributed to the loss of skin integrity and linked with exhibition of SS was conducted.

Neuropeptide control mechanisms in cutaneous biology: physiological and clinical significance.

The skin as a barrier and immune organ is exposed to omnipresent environmental challenges such as irradiation or chemical and biologic hazards. Neuropeptides released from cutaneous nerves or skin and immune cells in response to noxious stimuli are mandatory for a fine-tuned regulation of cutaneous immune responses and tissue maintenance and repair. They initialize host immune responses, but are equally important for counter regulation of proinflammatory events. Interaction of the nervous and immune systems occurs both locally - at the level of neurogenic inflammation and immunocyte activation

Cutaneous innervation: form and function.

It is useful for dermatologists to know about the innervation of the skin because dysfunction of cutaneous neurons can cause symptoms--such as itching, pain, and paresthesias--that are evaluated by dermatologists. We review the innervation of the skin and update readers about recent neuroscientific discoveries.

Neonatal skin barrier: structure, function, and disorders.

The development of the human skin from intrauterine to extrauterine life is a balletic interplay of maturing layers and interlocking structures. We discuss this transition and then branch out to touch on issues of premature infant as well as neonatal skin care. Disruption of the barrier function due to toxins and development errors are expounded upon. Staph scalded skin syndrome, collodion membrane, bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, autosomal recessive ichthyosis (lamellar and congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma), and harlequin fetus are used as examples of these disruptions. Experimental Studies of Bioinspired Shark Denticles for Drag Reduction.

Shark skin is composed of denticles, or complex scale-like features, which have been shown to reduce drag in turbulent and laminar flow. The denticle crown features undulating structures called riblets that interact with the turbulent boundary layer to reduce drag. Two mechanisms thought to contribute to the drag-reducing properties of riblets include the lifting of streamwise vortices and the hampering of spanwise vortex interactions to reduce crossflow, which could translate to similar flow mechanisms for denticles. Because of the varied morphologies of dermal denticles on different shark sp

Acne vulgaris, probiotics and the gut-brain-skin axis: from anecdote to translational medicine.

Acne vulgaris has long been postulated to feature a gastrointestinal mechanism, dating back 80 years to dermatologists John H. Stokes and Donald M. Pillsbury. They hypothesised that emotional states (e.g. depression and anxiety) could alter normal intestinal microbiota, increase intestinal permeability, and contribute to systemic inflammation. They were also among the first to propose the use of probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus cultures. In recent years, aspects of this gut-brain-skin theory have been further validated via modern scientific investigations. It is evident that gut microbes an

[The rationale for the application of photomagnetic therapy in the treatment of dermatitis].

BACKGROUND: in spite of the fact that photomagnetic therapy with the use of the FotoSPOK device (Magnomed Ltd., Belarus) is already used in the medical practice, the application of this method for the management of many diseases remains to be substantiated on the scientifically sound grounds. AIM: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of photomagnetic therapy in the treatment of the local inflammatory process in the skin and to elaborate the rationale for the application of this technique in the treatment of contact dermatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The experi

The intromission function of the foreskin.

Masters and Johnson observed that the foreskin unrolled with intercourse. However, they overlooked a prior observation that intromission was thereby made easier. To evaluate this observation an artificial introitus was mounted on a scales. Repeated measurements showed a 10-fold reduction of force on entry with an initially unretracted foreskin as compared to entry with a retracted foreskin. For the foreskin to reduce the force required it must cover most of the glans when the penis is erect. This may occur only in humans. These observations mean that foreskin and prepuce can no longer be consi

Skin Barrier Dysregulation in Psoriasis.

The skin barrier is broadly composed of two elements-a physical barrier mostly localised in the epidermis, and an immune barrier localised in both the dermis and epidermis. These two systems interact cooperatively to maintain skin homeostasis and overall human health. However, if dysregulated, several skin diseases may arise. Psoriasis is one of the most prevalent skin diseases associated with disrupted barrier function. It is characterised by the formation of psoriatic lesions, the aberrant differentiation and proliferation of keratinocytes, and excessive inflammation. In this review, we summ

Tickle.

Tickle is a familiar sensation that may have two components: a light or feather-type noxious sensation termed by Hall and Allin as knismesis, and a heavy or laughter-associated sensation termed gargalesis. Studies on the sensation of tickle have generally been on one sensation or the other, but not on both. In pleasurable, laughter-associated tickle there are elements of touch and pleasure, but the sensation may be a synthesis of touch and itch, with receptors, neural pathways or central receptors different from knismesis. It is unclear why some skin sites are more ticklish than other sites. L

Androgen action on human skin -- from basic research to clinical significance.

Androgens affect several functions of the human skin, such as sebaceous gland growth and differentiation, hair growth, epidermal barrier homeostasis and wound healing. Their effects are mediated by binding to nuclear androgen receptors. Androgen activation and deactivation are mainly intracellular events. They differ from cell type to cell type and between cells at different locations. The major circulating androgens, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and androstenedione, are predominantly produced in the adrenal glands, and testosterone and 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone are mainly synthesized in th
