AIM: Despite being widely recognized, the cephalocaudal progression of jaundice in newborns (Kramer's Rule) has never been satisfactorily explained. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the cephalocaudal progression of jaundice in newborns is related to regional differences in skin temperature and skin perfusion.
METHODS: A convenience sample of 50 infants was included in the study. On each infant, a transcutaneous bilirubin, skin temperature and capillary refill time measurement was made at five sites; the forehead, sternum, lower abdomen, mid thigh and sole. The relationshi

The transition from wakefulness to sleep occurs when the core body temperature decreases. The latter is facilitated by an increase in the cutaneous blood flow, which dissipates internal heat into the micro-environment surrounding the sleeper's body. The rise in cutaneous blood flow near sleep onset causes the distal (hands and feet) and proximal (abdomen) temperatures to increase by about 1 °C and 0.5 °C, respectively. Characterizing the dynamics of skin temperature changes throughout sleep phases and understanding its relationship with sleep quality requires a means to unobtrusively and longi

This prospective study aimed to establish the pattern of knee skin temperature following uncomplicated primary total knee replacement. Thirty-two patients were included. The skin temperature of operated and contralateral knees was measured preoperatively and daily during the first 6 weeks postoperatively. Measurements were also taken at 3, 6, 12 and 24 months following surgery. The difference in temperature between the two knees had a mean value of (+)2.9 degrees C at 7 days. This mean value decreased to (+)1.6 degrees C at 6 weeks, (+)1.3 degrees C at 3 months, (+)0.9 degrees C at 6 months (+

The histologic alterations induced by spray refrigerants independent of and in combination with dermabrasion were studied with the use of the domestic pig as a model. Tissue injury was found to be a function of spray duration and freeze intensity. Both preabrasion freezing and postabrasion refreezing could produce damage additive to that of mechanical planing. Skin surface and intradermal temperature variations during refrigeration were recorded. The possible implications of these findings as they pertain to clinical dermabrasion are discussed.

The responsiveness of murine lymphocytes and human peripheral blood lymphocytes to phytohemagglutinin, concanavalin A, pokeweed mitogen, and endotoxin was tested in vitro at 32, 35, and 37 degrees C. The responses at 32 degrees C were delayed and often depressed. Mouse cells responded equally well at 35 and 37 degrees C. Human lymphocytes often responded more rapidly at 37 than at 35 degrees C. Since skin temperature, particularly that of the distal extremities, is usually 32 degrees C or less, a relative deficiency in cell-mediated immunity may exist in these sites. This may be part of the re

Accurate temperature monitoring is essential for detecting perioperative hypothermia during spinal anesthesia, where rapid redistribution of body heat commonly occurs. Although zero-heat-flux (ZHF) thermometry has emerged as a noninvasive method for estimating core temperature, the reliability of chest skin temperature monitoring in this context remains unclear. In this prospective observational study, temperature measurements were obtained at 5-minute intervals using a forehead ZHF sensor, an infrared tympanic thermometer, and a non-axillary chest skin probe in patients undergoing orthopedic

Motion sickness may prevent the adoption of automated vehicles, as passengers are more susceptible than drivers. Predicting individual susceptibility from vehicle motion is challenging due high variability between people. There is a need to measure passengers' motion sickness, preferably objectively and unobtrusively. Biomarkers, the physiological responses to motion sickness, could provide a solution. We developed and evaluated a camera-based system using electro-optical and infrared imaging to measure facial skin temperature unobtrusively. The relationship between facial skin temperature in

Exposure to water and detergents is an important factor for development of irritant contact dermatitis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of temperature on the damaging effects of water and detergents on the skin. Twenty healthy volunteers participated in the study. Ten participants had right and left forearms immersed into a detergent (soap) solution for 2 days twice daily for 10 min. Another 10 participants had both forearms immersed into sterile water. Right and left forearms were randomized to immersion into 20 degrees C and 40 degrees C solutions, respectively. Re

Skin temperature was measured in the forearms of 8 healthy volunteers to study the effect of transdermal application of a stable prostacyclin analogue (Iloprost). Local skin temperature was significantly increased 24 hours and 48 hours after application of the drug when compared with an area of control skin. The effect had worn off by 72 hours. At a dose of 25 micrograms there were no systemic effects of vasodilatation or antiplatelet behaviour, but when the dose was increased to 75 micrograms there was a decreased rate of platelet aggregation for 24 hours. Histology of a skin biopsy suggested

The author conducted a dynamic measurement of skin temperature and the neurovascular reflex in 179 patients with atherosclerotic psychoses. It was possible to eliminate a new diagnostical index which was named by the author as an index of skin-temperature asymmetry. It was established that the skin temperature in such mental disorders is 2-3 degrees lower than in normals while the index of skin-temperature asymmetry is 3-4 times more than in normals and the neurovascular reflex is weakened.

Regional heat loss and skin temperature changes in 25 healthy, full-term infants were studied under controlled conditions at environmental temperatures of 28-32 degrees C. Skin temperatures for all body regions followed changes in operative temperatures. Regional dry heat losses closely followed the external temperature gradient (difference between skin and operative temperature). The technique allows measurement of regional dry heat loss from the newborn skin exposed to different environmental conditions for different body surface areas. Thermal conductance, as an index of cutaneous blood flo

We measured rectal, lateral chest wall, and axillary temperature every half hour for at least 24 h while subjects were living normal life-styles and keeping a sleep/activity diary. We then used a purification method to estimate the decrease of temperature due to sleep and the increases due to sitting, standing, walking, or exercising, as well as the parameters of the cosine curve that described the "purified data." Cosinor analysis of raw and purified data showed that the acrophases from both skin sites were much more variable and up to 8 h later than were those from the rectum (particularly i

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia during the newborn period is widely regarded as a major contributory cause of significant morbidity and mortality of newborn infants. Thermoprotective behaviours such as skin-to-skin care (SSC) or the use of appropriate devices have been recommended as simple tools for the avoidance of neonatal hypothermia. We examined the relation between the duration of skin-to-skin care and infant temperature change after birth in suboptimal delivery room temperatures.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical charts of all vaginally born infants of gestational age ≥ 35 weeks born January-Ju

There are many formulas to calculate mean weighted skin temperature (Tmws) with little evidence for their agreement with each other. This investigation assessed the agreement of five common Tmws formulas (≤7 sites) with a 12-site formula (Hardy-DuBois 12-site, HDB12). It was hypothesized that a formula with more measurement sites (Hardy-Dubois 7-site, HDB7) would have more agreement during steady-state exercise in moderate (20°C) and warm (30°C) conditions. Ten well-trained male participants (age: 37 ± 12 yr, height: 178 ± 7 cm, mass: 76 ± 9 kg, body fat: 8 ± 2%, V̇o2peak: 66 ± 10 mL/kg/min) c

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the relationship of skin temperature changes to clinical, radiologic, and electrophysiological findings in unilateral lumbosacral radiculopathy and to delineate the possible temperature-change mechanisms involved.
METHODS: One hundred and one patients who had clinical symptoms and for whom there were physical findings suggestive or indicative of unilateral lumbosacral radiculopathy, along with 27 normal controls, were selected for the study, and the thermal-pattern results of digital infrared thermographic imaging (DITI) performed on the back and lower extremities were a

In the clinical setting, skin temperature is both easily evaluated and useful in assessments of sympathetic dysfunction. The present study purposed to observe the serial skin temperature changes of both hindlimbs following several types of sciatic nerve injury (complete transection and ligation model [CTL], crush injury model [CRI], and chronic constriction injury model [CCI]) in Sprague-Dawley rats and, further, to delineate the possible mechanisms through various evaluation methods. The temperature differences between the intact and injured areas (ΔT) on the plantar surface and toes varied a

OBJECTIVE: Besides excessive daytime sleepiness, disturbed nocturnal sleep is a major complaint of patients with narcolepsy. Previously, alterations in skin temperature regulation in narcoleptic patients have been shown to be related to increased sleepiness. This study tests the hypothesis that direct control of nocturnal skin temperature might be applied to improve the disturbed sleep of narcoleptic patients.
METHODS: Participants were eight patients (five males) diagnosed as having narcolepsy with cataplexy according to the ICSD-2 criteria, mean (SD) age 28.6 (6.4) years, range 18-35 years.
