[Sleep bruxism : state of the art and management].

Although well studied since the 50's, bruxism remains a largely unknown pathology. Its origin is complex, mixing psychological as well as neurological, odontological and hypnic aspects. However, the few analyzes performed on this topic have allowed to set convincing etiopathological hypotheses, including central dysregulation of the dopaminergic system as well as of the neuro-masticatory system. To avoid harmful consequences as headaches, temporomandibular disorders and premature dental scuffs / fractures, it is mandatory to diagnose bruxism as early as possible. For this purpose, and in addit

Neurology of sleep and sleep-related breathing disorders and their relationships to sleep bruxism.

Conditions that affect sleep can impact overall health. More than 70 million Americans suffer from problems with sleep. The purpose of this article is to provide the basic science of sleep physiology and how it relates to disorders that are pertinent to dentistry. Concepts are presented that explain airway dynamics and how the jaw and tongue influence airway obstruction. Additionally, explanation is given on an association between temporomandibularj aw dysfunction and bruxism during sleep.

Association between possible sleep bruxism and sleep characteristics in children.

AIMS: To evaluate the relationship between possible sleep bruxism and sleep characteristics in children. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted through data collection of a pre-tested questionnaire answered by 111 parents on behalf of their children in the waiting room during their appointment at the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic of a public Brazilian university. The diagnosis of possible sleep bruxism was based on the international classification of sleep disorders (ICSD) criteria. The Chi-square test and logistic multinomial regression test were used in the statistical analysis. R

Factors associated with preschool children's sleep bruxism.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of sleep bruxism, related factors, and quality of life of preschool children and their families. METHOD: The sample was 475 children between 4 and 5 years old enrolled in schools in the city of Bauru-Brazil. Parents/legal guardians answered two questionnaires, one to assess the presence of bruxism and related factors and another that was the validated Brazilian version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (B-ECOHIS). Intraoral clinical examination was performed by two trained examiners (Kappa = 0.82) within the school environment. The data were

Sleep bruxism and sleep architecture in chronic migraine: A polysomnographic study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that sleep bruxism (SB) is common in migraine, and that patients with migraine often report poor sleep quality, SB and sleep architecture in chronic migraine (CM) have not been fully explored. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to establish the association between SB and CM, with an assessment of sleep structure alterations in CM. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The diagnosis of migraine was made using the 3rd edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3). Sleep bruxism and sleep structure were assessed using polysomnography, according to the

Internalizing symptoms and sleep disturbances associated with sleep bruxism in preschoolers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The presence of sleep bruxism (SB) has been associated with internalizing symptoms and sleep disturbances in school-aged children and adolescents. While manifestations of SB often start earlier in development, there is a lack of studies investigating such an association in younger age groups. Therefore, we assessed the association between SB frequency and (1) internalizing symptoms (anxiety and depression) and (2) sleep disturbances in preschoolers. METHODS: The study comprised 340 mother-child dyads from a longitudinal cohort. Inclusion criteria were full-term preg

The Co-Occurrence of Sexsomnia, Sleep Bruxism and Other Sleep Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Sleep sex also known as sexsomnia or somnambulistic sexual behavior is proposed to be classified as NREM (non-rapid eye movement) parasomnia (as a clinical subtype of disorders of arousal from NREM sleep-primarily confusional arousals or less commonly sleepwalking), but it has also been described in relation to REM (rapid eye movement) parasomnias. METHODS: The authors searched the PubMed database to identify relevant publications and present the co-occurrence of sexsomnia and other sleep disorders as a non-systematic review with case series. RESULTS: In the available literature

Glycemic burden during nocturnal sleep in patients with sleep bruxism across sleep stages.

OBJECTIVE: To assess nocturnal glycemic burden across sleep stages in adults with polysomnographically confirmed sleep bruxism. METHODS: 95 adults underwent polysomnography, bilateral masseter electromyography, and continuous glucose monitoring. 70 participants with BEI ≥2 events/h formed the sleep bruxism group and 25 with BEI <2 were controls. Glycemic burden was calculated as glucose AUC (mg·h/dL). RESULTS: Fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, sleep architecture, respiratory indices, and oxygenation did not differ. Glycemic burden was higher with bruxism during total sleep time (690.06 v

Familial nocturnal facio-mandibular myoclonus mimicking sleep bruxism.

A mother and son presented with a multi-decade history of nocturnal tongue biting and bleeding. In both patients, video polysomnographic recordings documented bursts of electromyographic activity originating in the masseter and spreading to orbicularis oris and oculi muscles, present only during sleep. Faciomandibular myoclonic activity during sleep mimics sleep bruxism and may be familial.

Descriptive physiological data on a sleep bruxism population.

We studied 24 bruxers (23-67 years old). They often complained of orofacial and bodily pain and presented autonomic symptoms (sweating 23%, palpitations at night 62%, decreased libido 50%); 19% had increased blood pressure requiring treatment, and 65% reported frequent headaches in the morning. Deep sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) were delayed. An average of 167 orofacial episodes developed during the night. The mean number of masseter bursts strictly defined as bruxism was 79, the mean delay for the first occurrence after sleep onset 18 minutes. The majority of bruxism occurred in stage 2

Bladder and bowel dysfunction in children with sleep bruxism.

OBJECTIVES: There is little evidence of a direct relationship between sleep bruxism and enuresis nocturna, and whether this enuresis is monosymptomatic or non-monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE or NMNE) is unknown. The aim of the study is to investigate the type and frequency of nocturnal enuresis and other lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in children with sleep bruxism. METHODS: The children who applied consecutively to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry were included in this study. Sleep bruxism was determined by history and confirmed by clinical examination by pedodontist. LUTS

Sleep bruxism in children and adolescents-A scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: This review paper focuses on sleep bruxism (SB) in children and adolescents. It aims to assess the landscape of knowledge published in the last 20 years. METHODS: A total of 144 relevant publications from 386 previously identified through Medline were included, of which 83 were on possible SB, 37 on probable SB, 20 on definite SB and 4 were non-applicable. The review places emphasis on the recent evidence on prevalence, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of SB in children and adolescents, with special focus on probable and definitive SB. RESULTS: The prevalen

Interepisode Sleep Bruxism Intervals and Myofascial Face Pain.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep bruxism (SB) is considered as a possible etiological factor for temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain. However, polysomnographic (PSG) studies, which are current "gold standard" diagnostic approach to SB, failed to prove an association between SB and TMD. A possible explanation could be that PSG studies have considered only limited characteristics of SB activity: the number of SB events per hour and, sometimes, the total duration of SB per night. According to the sports sciences literature, lack of adequate rest time between muscle activities leads to muscle overloading

Association between sleep bruxism and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Rhythmic masticatory muscle activity, including sleep bruxism (SB), can be induced in healthy individuals by experimental esophageal acidification, which plays an important role in the pathogenesis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, no robust evidence supports the association between SB and GERD. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between SB and GERD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-five individuals were eligible to participate in this observational transversal study at the Gastroenterology Service of the Clinical Hospital

[Influence of bruxism during sleep on stomatognathic system].

Nocturnal tooth contact such as bruxism has been considered to be one of the major factors of temporo-mandibular disorders (TMD). However, little information has been reported regarding mandibular movements during bruxing, because of the limitation of the measuring method. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of bruxism on the stomatognathic system. A new device for measuring nocturnal mandibular movements was developed using a PIN photodiode sensor, which was integrated with the polysomnography including both masseter and anterior temporal EMG. The maximum error of the s

Evaluation of Intensity of Sleep Bruxism in Arterial Hypertension.

Sleep bruxism (SB) is a masticatory muscle activity during sleep that is characterized as rhythmic (phasic) or non-rhythmic (tonic). The recent hypothesis on the etiology of SB supports the role of the central and autonomic nervous systems. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to assess the intensity of SB in patients with arterial hypertension. A total of 70 adults participated in this study: 35 patients with hypertension (study group) and 35 normotensive subjects (control group). Data were recorded using home portable cardiorespiratory polygraphy. The bruxism episode index (BEI) in the study g

Sleep-related faciomandibular myoclonus: A sleep-related movement disorder different from bruxism.

We describe a 33-year-old man who presented with lip and tongue nibbling and bleeding during sleep. Videopolysomnography revealed myoclonic jerks involving the masticatory and facial muscles recurring mainly during NREM sleep. There was no tonic EMG masticatory activity typical of bruxism. EMG analysis demonstrated the recruitment of V- to VII innervated muscles and, in half of the episodes, also the sternocleidomastoideus. Our patient had sleep-related faciomandibular myoclonus (SFMM) with spontaneous jerks of oromasticatory and cervical muscles, occurring only during sleep. Tooth grinding, t
