Comparison of injectable anesthetic combinations in free-ranging two-toed sloths in French guiana.

Immobilization was studied in 202 free-ranging two-toed sloths (Choloepus didactylus). All the sloths were in good condition with a body weight > 2 kg, and were anesthetized for a variety of minor clinical procedures. Intramuscular anesthetic combinations included 0.1 mg/kg acepromazine + 10 mg/kg ketamine (A/K, n = 30), 1 mg/kg xylazine + 10 mg/kg ketamine (X/K, n = 89), 10 mg/kg tiletamine/zolazepam (T/Z, n = 37), and 0.04 mg/kg medetomidine + 3 mg/kg ketamine (M/K, n = 46) antagonized by 0.2 mg/kg atipamezole. The animals were quiet during the induction stage and complete recumbency was rea

Zoonotic Giardia duodenalis assemblage A in northern sloth from Brazilian Amazon.

BACKGROUND: The parasite Giardia duodenalis infects a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including domestic and wild animals as well as humans. Giardia is genotyped into eight assemblages (A-H). Zoonotic assemblages A and B have already been identified in humans and wild and domestic animals (non-human primates and cats) from Brazilian Amazon and in the world. Due to its zoonotic/zooanthroponotic nature, surveillance initiatives and the definition of Giardia assemblages are important in order to characterise the epidemiological scenario and to implement further control measures. OBJECTIVES: Dete

Placentitis and abortion caused by canine distemper virus in a Linnaeus's two-toed sloth.

Canine distemper virus (CDV; family Paramyxoviridae, taxon species Morbillivirus canis) causes systemic disease in a broad range of mammalian hosts. CDV commonly targets epithelial, lymphoid, and nervous tissues. Reproductive disease is reported less frequently. Here, we describe CDV-associated placentitis and abortion in a 4-y-old, female Linnaeus's two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) from a private collection. The animal developed respiratory and gastrointestinal illness, aborted a midgestational fetus, and subsequently died. Gross examination revealed necrotizing placentitis. Histological

Aortic branches and rete mirabile of the limbs of two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus).

Choloepus didactylus has reduced metabolism and difficulty in thermoregulation owing to its low body mass, and there are few studies related to the vascularization of abdominal and thoracic organs in this species. Therefore, we macroscopically described the arteries that comprise the aortic arch, thoracic aorta, and abdominal aorta. Six specimens were used, and their arterial systems filled with red latex before fixation in 10% formaldehyde, and fragments of the rete mirabile were processed for histological analysis using light and scanning electron microscopy. In these species, the aortic arc

Rainfall and sloth births in may, Q fever in July, Cayenne, French Guiana.

Q fever in French Guiana is correlated with the rainy season. We found a 1- to 2-month lagged correlation between Q fever incidence and the number of births of three-toed sloth. This result strengthens the hypothesis that the three-toed sloth is the wild reservoir of Q fever in French Guiana.

An immunohistochemical study on the pancreatic endocrine cells of the three-toed sloth, Bradypus variegatus.

The cellular composition and relative frequency of the occurrence of pancreatic endocrine cells were studied immunohistochemically in a primitive eutherian and arboreal folivore, the three-toed sloth, since previous histochemical and ultrastructural studies on the endocrine pancreas of the sloth have detected only a single islet cell type, the A cell. In the sloth pancreas, four types of endocrine cells immunoreactive for glucagon, insulin, somatostatin and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) were found as reported in the pancreas of human and common experimental mammals, but pancreatic polypeptid

Some morphological and histochemical studies on the intestinal tract of the Brazilian sloth (Bradypus tridactylus).

The intestinal of the 3-toed sloth, Bradypus tridactylus, was studied macroscopically, with light microscope and with histochemical methods for mucosubstances. Macroscopically, the inner surface of the duodenum shows longitudinal and circular folds. There is no caecum, nor appendix. The large intestine consists of a short colon and a large rectal pouch, which has a thick wall. The mucosa of the small intestine has long leaf-shaped villi covered with columnar epithelium having a well developed striated border, and the goblet cells are scattered among the columnar cells. An association between n

Three-Dimensional Limb Kinematics in Brown-Throated Three-Toed Sloths (Bradypus variegatus) During Suspensory Quadrupedal Locomotion.

Suspensory locomotion differs significantly from upright quadrupedal locomotion in mammals. Nevertheless, we know little concerning joint kinematics of suspensory movement. Here, we report three-dimensional kinematic data during locomotion in brown-throated three-toed sloths (Bradypus variegatus). Individuals were recorded with four calibrated high-speed cameras while performing below-branch locomotion on a simulated branch. The elbow (range 73°-177°; mean 114°) and knee (range 107°-175°; mean 140°) were extended throughout support phase, with elbow extension increasing with speed. Both the fo

Fatal gastric amebiasis in a Linnaeus's two-toed sloth associated with Naegleria australiensis infection.

Here we describe a case of fatal amebic gastritis associated with Naegleria australiensis infection in an 11-mo-old Linnaeus's two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus). The sloth had a history of weight loss and intermittent diarrhea for 18 d, and subsequently died despite empirical treatment. Postmortem findings included emaciation, gastric dilation with fluid content, and fibrinonecrotic gastritis with intralesional amebic trophozoites and cysts in the glandular region of the fundus. Transmission electron microscopy ruled out Amoebozoa of the family Entamoebidae based on the presence of mitocho

The first evidence of pituitary gland tumor in ground sloth Valgipes bucklandi Lund, 1839.

Bone diseases are commonly found in the fossil record, especially in mammals of the Pleistocene megafauna, which exhibit signs of overload in the articulations. However, pathologies that affect soft tissues are not usually reported, even due to the nature of fossilization that rarely preserves such materials. In paleoneurological research using CT scan and three-dimensional reconstructions of Pleistocene sloths, an anomaly is discovered in the space that houses the pituitary gland, the sella turcica. The tomographic analysis of a Valgipes bucklandi skull revealed a great enlargement at the sel

Aquatic sloths (Thalassocnus) from the Miocene of Chile and the evolution of marine mammal herbivory in the Pacific Ocean.

The evolution of marine mammals in South America includes unique and extinct lineages found nowhere else in the world, such as the walrus-convergent whale Odobenocetops and multiple aquatic sloth species belonging to the genus Thalassocnus. Aquatic sloths have been collected from Mio-Pliocene marine deposits in Peru and Chile, and terrestrial deposits in Argentina. In Chile, these occurrences range over 800 km across several basins from the Bahía Inglesa, Coquimbo, and Horcón formations. Here we report aquatic sloth material belonging to the species Thalassocnus natans from a new locality, Nor

Muscle architectural properties indicate a primary role in support for the pelvic limb of three-toed sloths (Bradypus variegatus).

Tree sloths evolved below-branch locomotion making them one of few mammalian taxa beyond primates for which suspension is nearly obligatory. Suspension requires strong limb flexor muscles that provide both propulsion and braking/support, and available locomotor kinetics data indicate that these roles differ between fore- and hindlimb pairs. Muscle structure in the pelvic limb is hypothesized to be a key anatomical correlate of function in braking/support during suspensory walking and propulsion and/or support during vertical climbing. This expectation was tested by quantifying architecture pro

Loners Have It: Insights on Breeding and Non-Breeding Individuals of Sloth Bears in Central India.

Population persistence is critically dependent on the reproductive biology of organisms, which often remains poorly understood, especially for solitary and elusive carnivores. Exhibiting intraspecific reproductive state segregation, as a part of breeding biology, indicates avoiding infanticides and/or reducing resource competition. Sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) is the most common ursid in the Indian Subcontinent, yet knowledge of their breeding biology concerning intraspecific interaction is scanty. We assessed the occupancy and temporal activity of sloth bears for two states related to their

Identification and phylogenetic analysis of novel Piroplasmida detected in the two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus).

This study investigated the pathological and parasitological causes of death in two two-toed sloths (Choloepus didactylus) housed at a zoo in Hokkaido, Japan. Genomic DNA was extracted from the clotted blood of these animals and subsequently examined by nested PCR assays targeting the 18S rRNA and β-tubulin genes. The nucleotide sequences of these genes were determined and a phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rRNA gene was performed. One sample was detected positive in nested PCR. Sequencing analysis revealed that the detected parasite was closely related to the order Piroplasmida and was subseq

Novel herpesvirus potentially associated with oral lesions in a two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus).

The superorder Xenarthra comprises anteaters, sloths and armadillos, all endemic of the Americas. Despite their distinctive evolutionary history, information regarding viruses affecting this group remains scarce. Herein, we report a gammaherpesvirus infection in a two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) under human care that presented recurrent oral vesicular lesions and oral candidiasis. The gammaherpesvirus identified in oral swab sample likely represents a novel species, due to the large genetic divergence when compared to the closest sequences available on public databases, and its identific

Predation of the giant Miocene caiman Purussaurus on a mylodontid ground sloth in the wetlands of proto-Amazonia.

Thirteen million years ago in South America, the Pebas Mega-Wetland System sheltered multi-taxon crocodylian assemblages, with the giant caiman Purussaurus as the top predator. In these Miocene swamps where reptiles and mammals coexisted, evidence of their agonistic interactions is extremely rare. Here, we report a tibia of the mylodontid sloth Pseudoprepotherium bearing 46 predation tooth marks. The combination of round and bisected, shallow pits and large punctures that collapsed extensive portions of cortical bone points to a young or sub-adult Purussaurus (approx. 4 m in total length) as t

Q fever epidemic in Cayenne, French Guiana, epidemiologically linked to three-toed sloth.

A Q fever epidemic occurred in 2013 in a small military residential area in Cayenne, French Guiana. A retrospective cohort study was conducted to identify Q fever risk factors. Confirmed acute Q fever case was defined as positive serology (IgM ≥ 50 and phase II IgG ≥ 200) and/or positive qPCR on serum or blood. In addition, wild mammals were captured at the study site and tested by serology and real-time PCR performed on blood, vaginal swabs and ticks. The attack rate was 20 percent (11/54). All the cases were symptomatic with fever >38.5 °C and community-acquired pneumonia for four cases. Log

The autonomic component in blood pressure and heart rate effects of tilting in the three-toed sloth.

1. This study attempts to elucidate unique heart and blood pressure responses seen in sloths in response to tilting by blocking autonomics with atropine, propranolol, or a combination of these. 2. Atropine produces less heart rate increase in sloths than in other mammals but blocks reflex bradycardia as expected. 3. Propranolol reduces heart rate to about the same degree as in man and completely blocks all cardiac responses to tilting, both direct and reflex. 4. Atropine slightly diminishes blood pressure responses to tilting whereas propranolol tends to augment the already marked increases.

Three toes and three modes: Dynamics of terrestrial, suspensory, and vertical locomotion in brown-throated three-toed sloths (Bradypodidae, Xenarthra).

Living sloths exhibit numerous anatomical specializations towards inverted quadrupedalism, however, previous studies have noted a more varied locomotor repertoire than previously anticipated. In this study, we present spatiotemporal gait characteristics and triaxial kinetic data from the brown-throated three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) across three locomotor modes: terrestrial quadrupedal "crawling", suspensory walking, and vertical climbing. Compared to quadrupedal crawling and suspensory walking, B. variegatus adopted longer contact times and stride durations, larger duty factors, and g
