A Smart Finger for Soft Material Identification Based on a Multimodal Tactile Sensor.

Existing artificial tactile sensing technologies face significant challenges in addressing signal instability caused by the complex mechanical responses of soft materials. Here, a multimodal smart tactile finger based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) is developed. The smart finger system integrates a stable contact mechanism with a multimodal sensing module, enabling the synchronous acquisition of composite responses from four TENG channels and one PENG channel. For different soft materials, the TENG and PENG signals generated during the detectio

Graphene Oxide: A Smart (Starting) Material for Natural Methylxanthines Adsorption and Detection.

Natural methylxanthines, caffeine, theophylline and theobromine, are widespread biologically active alkaloids in human nutrition, found mainly in beverages (coffee, tea, cocoa, energy drinks, etc.). Their detection is thus of extreme importance, and many studies are devoted to this topic. During the last decade, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) gained popularity as constituents of sensors (chemical, electrochemical and biosensors) for methylxanthines. The main advantages of GO and RGO with respect to graphene are the easiness and cheapness of synthesis, the notable higher s

Recent advances in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as a smart sensing material.

As a newly emerging kind of porous material, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have drawn much attention because of their fascinating structural features (e.g., divinable structure, adjustable porosity and total organic backbone). Since the seminal work of Yaghi and co-workers reported in 2005, the COF materials have shown superior potential in diverse applications, such as gas storage, adsorption, optoelectronics, catalysis, etc. Recently, COF materials have shown a new trend in sensing fields. This critical review briefly describes the synthesis routes for COF powders and thin films. What's

Cultured skin as a 'smart material' for healing wounds: experience in venous ulcers.

The healing of chronic wounds is a difficult and varied problem. The engineering of a cultured skin tissue offers an adaptive therapy for chronic wounds. Our hypothesis has been that living tissue can act as a 'smart material' to heal wounds. We have examined the healing characteristics of a bilayered cultured skin equivalent (Graftskin) in a controlled study and present clinical data from interim analyses for 233 patients over 6 months of treatment. All venous ulcer patients will be followed for up to 1 year. We report on three basic scenarios of healing: (i) promotion of healing by secondary

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks: Toward adaptive porous materials for energy, environment, and smart devices.

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have recognized as a member of the porous crystalline material's family that placed between the conventional inorganic solids and the covalent and/or coordination-based organic frameworks. They are assembled by directional hydrogen bonds, which are frequently strengthened by п-п stacking and van der Waals force, offering high crystallinity, adjustable porosity, flexibility and self-repairing properties, properties that are uncommon in MOFs and COFs. This review highlights the overview of the HOFs with the basic design principles, hydrogen-bond construc

Glucose-Responsive Materials for Smart Insulin Delivery: From Protein-Based to Protein-Free Design.

Over the last four decades, glucose-responsive materials have emerged as promising candidates for developing smart insulin delivery systems, offering an alternative approach to treating diabetes. These materials replicate the pancreas's natural "closed loop" insulin secretion function by detecting changes in blood glucose levels and releasing insulin accordingly. This perspective highlights the evolution of glucose-responsive materials from protein-based materials, such as glucose oxidase (GOx), and glucose-binding proteins, such as concanavalin A (ConA), to protein-free materials, including p

Smart Dental Materials Intelligently Responding to Oral pH to Combat Caries: A Literature Review.

Smart dental materials are designed to intelligently respond to physiological changes and local environmental stimuli to protect the teeth and promote oral health. Dental plaque, or biofilms, can substantially reduce the local pH, causing demineralization that can then progress to tooth caries. Progress has been made recently in developing smart dental materials that possess antibacterial and remineralizing capabilities in response to local oral pH in order to suppress caries, promote mineralization, and protect tooth structures. This article reviews cutting-edge research on smart dental mater

Bioinspired Robotic Fingers Based on Pneumatic Actuator and 3D Printing of Smart Material.

In this article, we have proposed a novel robotic finger design principle aimed to address two challenges in soft pneumatic grippers-the controllability of the stiffness and the controllability of the bending position. The proposed finger design is composed of a 3D printed multimaterial substrate and a soft pneumatic actuator. The substrate has four polylactic acid (PLA) segments interlocked with three shape memory polymer (SMP) joints, inspired by bones and joints in human fingers. By controlling the thermal energy of an SMP joint, the stiffness of the joints is modulated due to the dramatic

Natural Polymer-Based Hydrogels for Localized Therapy in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: From Smart Materials to Clinical Translation.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains difficult to manage in a substantial proportion of patients because conventional systemic therapies may fail to achieve sufficient drug accumulation at inflamed intestinal sites while causing systemic adverse effects. Therefore, localized delivery systems capable of protecting therapeutic agents during gastrointestinal transit and releasing them at disease sites are urgently needed. Natural polymer-based hydrogels have attracted increasing attention because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability, mucoadhesiveness, and tunable responsive

[Evolution of DFU treatment strategies: from simple coverage with traditional dressings to active modulation with smart materials].

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) fall into a vicious cycle of difficulty healing due to hyperglycemia-induced persistent inflammation, accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), tissue hypoxia, and susceptibility to infection. This paper reviews the pathological microenvironmental characteristics of DFUs, the design strategies of smart materials, and their integration with artificial intelligence (AI). Given the complex pathological microenvironment of DFUs, traditional dressings that provide simple coverage are no longer adequate, whereas responsive smart materials that are capable of dynamica

Clinical Efficacy of Bioactive and Smart Restorative Materials in Preventing Secondary Caries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Secondary caries is the primary cause of restoration failure, requiring the replacement of fillings and the progressive loss of tooth structure. Bioactive and smart restorative materials have been developed to combat this by releasing therapeutic ions (fluoride, calcium, phosphate) that promote remineralization and inhibit bacterial growth. However, clinical evidence regarding their efficacy compared with conventional inert materials remains fragmented. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of bioactive restorative materials in preventing secondary ca

Integrating Combination Therapy and Smart Embolic Materials to Overcome the Therapeutic Ceiling of Transarterial Chemoembolization in Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) remains standard for intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but its long-term efficacy is limited by post-embolic hypoxia-driven angiogenesis and high recurrence rates. Combining TACE with targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or ablation improves outcomes. Concurrently, smart embolic agents are transforming TACE from passive embolization into active modulation of the tumor microenvironment. This review systematically evaluates clinical evidence for TACE-based combinations and principles guiding individualized selection. We delineate synergistic me
