Development of a novel papain gel formulation: Exploring different concentrations for smear-layer deproteinization and enhanced dentin bonding.

BACKGROUND: The self-etch adhesive system modifies but does not completely remove the smear layer, leading to the weakening of the bond strength due to the formation of a hybridized layer. Smear-layer deproteinization with papain enzyme partially removes the smear layer, and increases the bond strength with self-etch adhesive. The aim was to develop a deproteinizing agent with a high papain enzyme concentration to enhance dentin bonding with self-etch adhesives. METHODS: Papain enzyme gel formulations (15 and 30 IU/g) were prepared and tested for physical stability, viscosity, pH, homogeneity

Adhesive bonding of various materials to hard tooth tissues--solubility of dentinal smear layer in dilute acid buffers.

While the acid etch technique has largely solved the problem of bonding restorative materials to enamel, attempts to improve adhesive bonding to dentin have so far had only limited success. One aspect to which insufficient attention has been paid is the presence of a smear layer on cut surfaces and of pellicle on surfaces exposed to saliva, both of which would reduce or prevent durable adhesive bonds. The present study attempts to evaluate the usefulness of various acidic solutions in removing these surface layers while causing minimal damage to the vital contents of the dentinal tubules. A se

Influence of dental exposure to oral environment on smear layer removal and collagen exhibition after using different conditioning agents.

Although in vitro studies have shown encouraging results for root surface conditioning with demineralizing agents, in vivo studies have failed to show its benefits in periodontal healing. This can be attributed to several factors, among which, the hypermineralization of dental surface. Therefore, this in vitro study compared, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the effect of root surface conditioning with different conditioners (1% and 25% citric acid, 24% EDTA and 50 mg/mL tetracycline hydrochloride) in impacted teeth and in teeth that had their roots exposed to the oral environment. Impact of Smear Layer Removal Using Etidronate- and EDTA-Based Irrigation Protocols on Root Canal Microbiota: An In Vivo Study.

Background: The effective elimination of root canal microbiota is essential for the treatment of apical periodontitis. The smear layer formed during instrumentation limits the penetration of irrigants into dentinal tubules, making chelation a critical component of irrigation protocols. While ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is commonly used for smear layer removal, etidronate has been proposed as an alternative due to its chemical compatibility with sodium hypochlorite. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of different irrigation protocols in eliminating microorganisms
