A winning smile? Smile intensity, physical dominance, and fighter performance.

The smile is perhaps the most widely studied facial expression of emotion, and in this article we examine its status as a sign of physical dominance. We reason, on the basis of prior research, that prior to a physical confrontation, smiles are a nonverbal sign of reduced hostility and aggression, and thereby unintentionally communicate reduced physical dominance. Two studies provide evidence in support of this prediction: Study 1 found that professional fighters who smiled more in a prefight photograph taken facing their opponent performed more poorly during the fight in relation to their less

Evaluation of aesthetics of posed smiles based on smile-related characteristics.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the aesthetics evaluation of four smile-related characteristics among different genders and professional subgroups, including dental professionals (DPs), non-dental healthcare professionals (NDPs), and laypersons (LPs). METHODS: Smile photographs were selected and digitally manipulated to determine changes in various smile aesthetic parameters (lip thickness ratio, smile line/smile index, upper lip curvature, and smile arc/dental curvature). These altered images were rated by Chinese participants (dental professionals, non-dental healthcar

Upper lip changes and gingival exposure on smiling: vertical dimension analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Our objectives were to evaluate and quantify upper lip soft-tissue changes in the vertical dimensions both at rest and at maximum smile, and to examine the correlation between upper labial vestibular attachment height and maxillary gingival exposure on smiling. METHODS: Seventy-two volunteers (36 men, 36 women) aged 20 to 40 (mean, 30.49 years) were recruited for this study. For each subject, 9 measurements of upper lip position and maxillary incisor crown height at rest and in maximum smile were recorded. RESULTS: A statistically significant sexual dimorphism was apparent in m

Characterization of posed smile by using visual analog scale, smile arc, buccal corridor measures, and modified smile index.

INTRODUCTION: Smile evaluation and designing are important; recent emphasis on the soft tissues has been on par with that on the hard tissues in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This importance has not yet gained proper attention, and smile analysis is often ignored in clinical examinations. We attempted a comprehensive evaluation of smile characteristics with the following aims: (1) evaluation of perception differences, if any, between dental specialists and laypersons; and (2) quantification of smile characteristics with the smile arc, buccal corridor measurements, and a modifie

Can Duchenne smiles be feigned? New evidence on felt and false smiles.

We investigated the value of the Duchenne (D) smile as a spontaneous sign of felt enjoyment. Participants either smiled spontaneously in response to amusing material (spontaneous condition) or were instructed to pose a smile (deliberate condition). Similar amounts of D and non-Duchenne (ND) smiles were observed in these 2 conditions (Experiment 1). When subsets of these smiles were presented to other participants, they generally rated spontaneous and deliberate D and ND smiles differently. Moreover, they distinguished between D smiles of varying intensity within the spontaneous condition (Expe

Evaluating smile aesthetic satisfaction and related smile characteristics in dental students.

AIM: This study aimed to assess the association between self-rated smile satisfaction and the smile dimensions among dental students. METHOD: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 216 Vietnamese dental students. A standardized photograph was taken of each student with their frontal social smiles to assess aesthetic dimensions. A single-session self-administered questionnaire containing five questions about smile aesthetic satisfaction related to various aspects was administered to all students. Differences in smile characteristics and satisfaction scores between the two genders

More than just smiling: how positive emotions are expressed on the face.

To advance the science of positive emotional expressions, we test how 22 positive emotions are spontaneously displayed on the face, using the participant-negotiated episodic recall method. Respondents (n = 163) narrated emotional events from their lives, and we extracted facial behaviours that reflected peak expressivity (35 410 facial actions). Network models were applied to probe whether specific positive emotions would be conditionally associated with particular facial behaviours. Our results point to three sets of positive emotions: five that do not seem to have specific facial actions rel

The effect of smiling on facial asymmetry in adults: a 3D evaluation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Mild resting facial asymmetry exists in clinically symmetrical faces, but the effect of smiling on the magnitude of overall facial asymmetry in adults has not been assessed. The aim of the present study was to use stereophotogrammetry to quantify the effect of smiling on overall facial asymmetry in Caucasian adults who presented with Class I incisor relationships and no history of orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Twenty male and 20 female Caucasians aged 1 8-30 years with no history of orthodontic treatment, a clinically symmetrical face and a Class I incisor relationship had

Tooth display and lip position during spontaneous and posed smiling in adults.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze differences in tooth display, lip-line height, and smile width between the posed smiling record, traditionally produced for orthodontic diagnosis, and the spontaneous (Duchenne) smile of joy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The faces of 122 male participants were each filmed during spontaneous and posed smiling. Spontaneous smiles were elicited through the participants watching a comical movie. Maxillary and mandibular lip-line heights, tooth display, and smile width were measured using a digital videographic method for smile analysis. Paired sample t-tests were used to compare me

Understanding positive affect in Angelman syndrome: Smiling and laughter across comparison groups.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurogenetic condition marked by frequent smiling and laughter. Early descriptions portrayed these expressions as inappropriate or disconnected from context, but recent work has questioned this view. This study examined the emotional responses of children with AS to auditory, tactile, visual, and social stimuli and compared them to typically developing (TD) children and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Using Bayesian mixed-effects models, we analyzed behavioral ratings and Facial Action Coding System (FACS) data. Children with AS showed more frequent po

Nothing to smile about.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated the high incidence of periodontal disorders among patients suffering from mental illnesses, probably because of self-care impairment, the difficult financial conditions, and the lack of motivation. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of depression and alexithymia on periodontal status. Due to the influence of personality traits on behavior in general, the secondary aim of our study was to investigate the possible impact of personality disorders on dental status. METHODS: Patients with major depression (DP) referred to our psyc

The perception of smile attractiveness.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the attractiveness of a smile according to variations from esthetic norms, photographic framing, and the order of the presentation of photographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A photograph of an individual was selected and digitally manipulated to create the following smiles: an ideal control smile (I), a smile with diastema (D1), a smile with midline deviation (LM3), a smile with deviation from the long axes of the lateral incisors (10D), and a smile with an inverted smile arc (LSRV). The manipulated photographs were developed in framings of the face and of the mouth and ev
