Investigation of periodontal destruction patterns in smokers and non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Previous work has suggested that tobacco smoking has a local as well as a systemic effect on the severity of periodontal disease. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that smokers have more disease in the upper anterior region. METHODS: A retrospective stratified random sample of 49 non-smokers and 39 heavy smokers (>or=20 cigarettes/day) was obtained from a total of 3678 referred patients with adult periodontitis. Probing depth data were collected from clinical records and radiographic measurements were carried out on existing dental panoramic tomographs to assess the inter-proxima

[Exposure to passive smoking among current smokers and non-smokers].

INTRODUCTION: Few studies have evaluated exposure to passive smoking among current smokers. The aim of our study was to assess environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) in current smokers, as well as attitudes towards smoking. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used a questionnaire containing questions about epidemiological information and the history of smoking, including exposure to ETS. The study was conducted in a group of 114 healthy individuals (mean age 29.7 years). RESULTS: 57 of the participants (50%) declared to be daily smokers, 32 (28%) had never smoked, 11 (9.6%) were ex-smokers, and 14 (12%) def

Immune Status and Mortality in Smokers, Ex-smokers, and Never-Smokers: The Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health Study.

INTRODUCTION: Elevated leukocyte counts are associated with cardiovascular disease. Smoking induces inflammation and alters levels of leukocyte subtypes. AIMS AND METHODS: Our aim was to investigate the effect of smoking on circulating immune cells and their association with mortality. Lymphocyte subtypes were identified by flow cytometry of fluorescent-labeled cells. We analyzed the association of leukocytes with mortality using Cox regression and assessed their effect on risk prediction based on principle components (PCs) using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and net-

Smoker's boils.

BACKGROUND: About 90% of patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) are smokers. A crucial eliciting role of smoking appears to be certain. In order to increase the awareness of this avoidable major cause of the disease and to facilitate the recognition of incipient disorder, we propose the more specific term 'smoker's boils' for HS lesions of patients who are smokers. METHOD: Clinical pictures of early lesions are presented. For the exceptional cases occurring in nonsmokers, the traditional name HS, representing an umbrella term, is adequate. RESULT/CONCLUSION: The renaming of HS as smoker

[Smokers' mitochondrial cardiomyopathy].

The authors analyze the metabolic background of mitochondrial myopathies of the skeletal musculature in humans. They summarize their results assembled over years pertaining to functional disorders of mitochondria of the heart muscle in experimental models of passive smoking in rabbits. Based on comparison of these disorders with disorders in mitochondrial myopathies they reach the conclusion that the concept of smokers' mitochondrial myopathy is justified.

Folate in smokers.

Blood folate concentration is decreased by tobacco smoking and presumably secondhand smoke. Because low folate concentration is associated with hyperhomocysteinemia, both are emerging as important and independent risk factors for atherosclerosis as well as prediction of early coronary artery disease. The primary cause of low folate concentration in smokers might be related to lifestyle and dietary habits. Smokers tend to consume fewer folate-rich fruits and vegetables vs non-smokers. Adverse cardiovascular health is generally attributed to toxic gases, particulates, and tars generated from tob

Non-small cell lung cancer in ever-smokers vs never-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) comprises 85% of cases with rising incidence among never-smokers (NS). This study seeks to compare clinical, imaging, pathology, and outcomes between NS and ever-smokers (S) NSCLC patients to identify significant differences if any. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 155 NSCLC patients (88 S and 67 NS). The main predictor was smoking. Clinical, imaging, and pathology findings were evaluated at initial biopsy for staging. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality, and the secondary

Evaluation of Oral Mucosal Lesions in Iranian Smokers and Non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking statistics are alarming and the oral mucosa is the first human part of the body that is exposed to the toxic substances of smoking. AIMS: Considering the high prevalence rate of tobacco-associated problems in the oral cavity and few studies on the Iranian population regarding the effects of smoking on the oral cavity, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between smoking and oral lesions in the Iranian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational study. In this observational study, the oral cavities of 200 participants (smokers = 100 and non-smokers =

Pharmacokinetic interactions between clozapine and sertraline in smokers and non-smokers.

Clozapine is an effective antipsychotic drug for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Sertraline is a widely prescribed antidepressant and often concomitantly applied to address negative symptoms or depression. However, data on interactions between clozapine and sertraline are inconsistent. The aim of our study was to evaluate pharmacokinetic interactions between clozapine and sertraline analysing a therapeutic drug monitoring database of 1644 clozapine-medicated patients. We compared four groups: non-smokers (n = 250) and smokers (n = 326) with co-medication without known effects on cytochrome

Putamen functional connectivity during inhibitory control in smokers and non-smokers.

The putamen has been shown to play a key role in inhibitory control and addiction, and consists of distinct subregions associated with distinct functions. The anterior putamen is thought to be specialized in goal-directed control or response-monitoring in connection with frontal regions, whereas the posterior part is specialized in habitual or automatic responding in connection with sensorimotor regions. The present study is the first to delineate functional networks of the anterior and posterior putamen in a Go-NoGo response inhibition task, and to examine differences between smokers (n = 25)

Periodontal Indices and Cytokines of Ex-Smokers/Non-Smokers After Bleaching.

Background and Objectives: Smoking is known to modulate the periodontal inflammatory response, and dental bleaching agents can transiently alter local and systemic cytokine levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate cytokine levels in both saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in non-smoking and ex-smoking patients, before and after in-office dental bleaching performed using chemically activated or diode-laser-activated protocols. Materials and Methods: This prospective, longitudinal, split-mouth clinical study included 40 participants allocated to two smoking-status groups (non-smoker

Gingival recession in smokers and non-smokers with minimal periodontal disease.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Smoking is a major risk factor for destructive periodontal disease. There is limited information with regard to effects of smoking in subjects with minimal periodontal destruction. The aim of the present investigation was to assess the development of gingival recession in young adult smokers and non-smokers. METHODS: 61 systemically healthy young adults, 19 to 30 years of age completed the final examination. 30 volunteers smoked at least 20 cigarettes per day, whereas 31 subjects were non-smokers. Clinical periodontal conditions were assessed 4x within a time period of 6 mont

Stereotypes of smokers held by Hispanic and white non-Hispanic smokers.

A group of Hispanic and White non-Hispanic smokers were asked to report the stereotypes they hold of smokers in general. All respondents tended to think that smokers were Nervous, Friendly, and Sociable; although White non-Hispanics felt more certain than Hispanics that smokers were Friendly, Aggressive, Sociable, Attractive, and Feminine. Factor analyses of the responses showed three common (across ethnicity) factors: Sociability, Self-Presentation, and Nervousness. Only the Self-Presentation factor showed statistically significant differences between the two ethnic groups. The amount of ciga

Comparing attentional bias to smoking cues in current smokers, former smokers, and non-smokers using a dot-probe task.

Much evidence documents that individuals with emotional and drug-use disorders demonstrate biased attention toward stimuli associated with their disorder. This bias appears to diminish following successful treatment. Two studies examined whether current cigarette smokers show biased attention toward smoking-related images compared with non-smokers (Studies 1 and 2) and whether this bias is less pronounced in former smokers (Study 2). Attentional bias toward cigarette-related photographs was examined using the dot-probe task. Pairs of images (one smoking-related) appeared side by side for 500 m

Evaluation of cardiac biomarkers in smokers and non-smokers with chronic periodontitis.

OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to assess the levels of the cardiac biomarkers in smokers versus non-smokers chronic periodontitis (CP) patients and periodontally healthy subjects, also to correlate cardiac biomarkers level with the severity of CP. METHODS: Eighty selected individuals were divided into three groups: Smokers CP (28), non-smokers CP (32), and healthy control subjects (20). The CP evaluated clinically by plaque index (PI), bleeding index (BI), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and pocket depth (PD). Serum levels of cardiac biomarkers were assayed for the following: Aspartate t

Comparison of cyanide exposure markers in the biofluids of smokers and non-smokers.

Cyanide is highly toxic and is present in many foods, combustion products (e.g. cigarette smoke), industrial processes, and has been used as a terrorist weapon. In this study, cyanide and its major metabolites, thiocyanate and 2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (ATCA), were analyzed from various human biofluids of smokers (low-level chronic cyanide exposure group) and non-smokers to gain insight into the relationship of these biomarkers to cyanide exposure. The concentrations of each biomarker tested were elevated for smokers in each biofluid. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found

Nicotine and cotinine in the cervical mucus of smokers, passive smokers, and nonsmokers.

Although epidemiological studies suggest that cigarette smoking is a risk factor for cervical cancer, further evidence is required to document the biological plausibility of this relationship. This study obtained cervical mucus, using a cervical flush technique, from 50 patients in a neoplasia clinic. Nicotine was detected in the cervical mucus of all 25 smokers and cotinine in the mucus of 84% of the smokers; nicotine and cotinine levels were correlated (P < or = 0.10) with both the number of cigarettes usually smoked and the number smoked in the last 24 h. Nicotine and cotinine levels for pa
