Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) was rare a century ago and was diagnosed in few living patients prior to 1925. By 1950, it was the most common heart problem seen by clinicians. Thought at first to have been overlooked, there were many explanations offered for its neglect. Smoking, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol are associated with AMI, but of these only smoking should be considered a cause. Hypertension and hypercholesterolemia may be co-effects, perhaps of inflammation stimulated in the lung and blood vessels by smoking and air pollution, thus affecting vessels and arteries subjecte

Smoking (tobacco addiction) is the most significant of the modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. Mistakenly described as a "habit" or "behavioral choice," the onset of tobacco addiction quickly follows the acquisition of an ability to inhale cigarette smoke and is reflected in a transformation of neurophysiologic function and nicotine-receptor density. Thereafter, comfort and a degree of neurophysiologic "equanimity" require the regular administration of nicotine. Smokers inhale thousands of other chemicals, many of which play critical roles in the initiation and accentuation of atherosclero

BACKGROUND: Environmental tobacco smoke is a health hazard. Reducing exposure to tobacco smoke in public places is a widespread public health goal. There is, however, considerable variation in the extent to which this goal has been achieved in different settings and societies. There is therefore a need to identify effective strategies for reducing tobacco consumption in public places.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to reduce tobacco consumption in public places.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Tobacco Addiction Review Group trials register, MEDLINE and EMBASE in

BACKGROUND: Most tobacco users become addicted during childhood and adolescence. To reduce the prevalence of tobacco-related illnesses, more emphasis must be placed on preventing the onset of tobacco use. Physicians can play a major role.
METHODS: Based on a series of clinical trials, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) developed recommendations to help patients stop smoking. Behavioral and developmental research have identified factors that contribute to the onset of smoking. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has developed guidelines for health supervision from birth to adulthood, inc

BACKGROUND: Persons with migration background exhibit higher smoking rates in comparison to the general population. These smokers often cannot be reached by prevention measures at the family doctor's office.
METHODS: In summer 2011 the health campaign "Smoke-free by Ramadan" was launched in 11 German cities. Measures included the training of doctors on smoking cessation methods, general bilingual information flyers, and in some cases lectures on smoking, specifically for imams. A number of local events, especially for individuals with Turkish migration background were initiated. For these heal

AIM: To determine whether repeated infancy-onset lifestyle counselling alters parental smoking and children's exposure to tobacco smoke.
METHODS: In 1990, 1062 healthy infants were recruited to a randomized, ongoing atherosclerosis prevention trial (STRIP). Intervention families received at least twice a year individualized nutrition and lifestyle counselling. By 1999, 652 8-y-old children continued participation. Exposure to tobacco smoke was evaluated using serum cotinine concentration. Parents' smoking was also assessed using questionnaires and interviews.
RESULTS: Parents' smoking decrea

BACKGROUND: Smoking among Indonesian youth remains a major public health concern. While behavioral predictors of smoking are well documented, empirical evidence on the effectiveness of biomarkers, such as exhaled carbon monoxide (eCO) levels in predicting smoking intensity is limited. This study examined factors correlated with smoking behavior and investigated the relationship between eCO levels, smoking intensity, and quit intentions. METHODS: This study used secondary data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health’s School-Based Smoking Prevention Program, involving 9,856 students aged 8–21 ye

OBJECTIVES: To assess associations between maternal smoking and congenital heart defects (CHDs) in offspring.
STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective case-control study using data for cases of CHD (n = 8339) and nonmalformed controls (n = 11 020) from all years (1997-2011) of the National Birth Defects Prevention Study. Maternal self-reported smoking 1 month before through 3 months after conception was evaluated as a binary (none, any) and categorical (light, medium, heavy) exposure. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate aOR and 95% CIs. Stratified analyses were performed

BACKGROUND: According to the 2014 Surgeon General's Report, smoking in early pregnancy can cause orofacial clefts. We sought to examine the implications of this causal link for the potential prevention of orofacial clefts in the United States.
METHODS: Using published data on the strength of the association between orofacial clefts and smoking in early pregnancy and the prevalence of smoking at the start of pregnancy, we estimated the attributable fraction for smoking as a cause of orofacial clefts. We then used the prevalence of orofacial clefts in the United States to estimate the number of

Hypertension, myocardial infarction, atherosclerosis, arrhythmias and valvular heart disease, coagulopathies and stroke, collectively known as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), contribute greatly to the mortality, morbidity and economic burden of illness in Canada and in other countries. It has been estimated that over four million Canadians have high blood pressure, a comorbid condition that doubles or triples the risk of CVD. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, CVDs caused 36% of deaths in 2001 and were responsible for 18% of the total hospital costs in Canada. The majority

Active smoking is a recognized risk factor of various infectious diseases. In a systematic review published in BMC Public Health, Murray et al. demonstrated that exposure to passive smoking significantly increased the risk of meningococcal disease among children. Their review especially highlights that the risk remains high even if the exposure occurs during pregnancy or after birth, although the authors could not disentangle the independent effects of smoking during pregnancy from those in the postnatal period. How passive smoking increases the risk of childhood meningococcal disease is not p

Zinc chloride (ZnCl2) smoke, a byproduct of smoke bombs widely used in military and firefighting training, poses significant risks to respiratory health and environmental safety. Inhalation of excessive ZnCl2 smoke can cause acute lung injury (ALI), but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. This study investigated the pulmonary toxicity of ZnCl2 smoke in mice, focusing on its pathogenic mechanisms and potential preventive treatments. ZnCl2 smoke exposure resulted in severe lung damage, including alveolar collapse, air-blood barrier disruption, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Pulmonary surfac

Gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction is a common comorbidity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for which a major cause is cigarette smoking (CS). The underlying mechanisms and precise effects of CS on gut contractility, however, are not fully characterised. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether CS impacts GI function and structure in a mouse model of CS-induced COPD. We also aimed to investigate GI function in the presence of ebselen, an antioxidant that has shown beneficial effects on lung inflammation resulting from CS exposure. Mice were exposed to CS

The difficulties in defining the exposure of a passive smoker might explain the controversial results regarding an association between passive smoking on one hand and lung cancer, tumors of all sites and ischemic heart diseases on the other. The plausibility of these epidemiological observations will be discussed in the light of analytical, toxicological, biochemical and oncological data. The minute amounts of nicotine and particulate matter, even the much higher concentrations of volatile substances, such as nitrosamines, NOx, acroleine and formaldehyde, present in diluted sidestream compared

BACKGROUND: Understanding smoking prevalence trends across demographic groups is crucial for effective public health interventions. Monitoring such trends helps tailor prevention strategies and allocate resources to the most affected populations. These insights support the design of more equitable and effective tobacco control policies.
AIM: This study analyzes data from the Comprehensive Cardiovascular Risk Prevention Program (CCRPP) in Poland (2012-2021) to assess smoking trends by age and gender among program participants.
METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional observational design was used

OBJECTIVES: Increasing tobacco excise tax is one of the most effective smoking-prevention tools. The aim of the study is to assess the use of this tool in the Czech Republic (CR) by studying trends in cigarette taxes, prices, tax revenue, and the affordability of cigarettes in the CR.
METHODS: Data on cigarette consumption, their tax rates, price, and tax revenue in the CR for 2004-2020 come from multiple sources. We used the consumer price index to convert nominal values to real values. Given an average daily consumption of 12.7 cigarettes per smoker, the affordability of cigarettes was meas

Smoking is an addiction that often begins in childhood or adolescence. Factors associated with early smoking initiation include parental smoking and socialization about smoking with their children. Previous studies evaluating the history obtained during routine pediatric appointments have not focused on parental smoking history and counseling. In this study, seventy-three (73) adolescents (mean age: 15.2 years; 77% female; 64% African-American) seen for medical care in a primary care clinic and their accompanying parent(s) (mean age: 43.5 years; 91% female) were surveyed about smoking followed

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to smokers has been identified as a predictor of adolescent tobacco use. Conversely, adolescents who tend to be advocates against smoking may become less likely to initiate smoking themselves. Several digital tobacco prevention programs have been developed to include social strategies. This study aimed to identify (1) whether programs can motivate adolescents to become advocates against smoking, and (2) if being an advocate against smoking and exposure to friends who smoke can predict smoking while controlling for a program's effect.
METHODS: We conducted a non-prespeci
