Soccer (football) and brain health.

Soccer is one of the most popular sports worldwide, played by over 270 million people and followed by many more. Several brain health benefits are promoted by practising soccer and physical exercise at large, which helps contrast the cognitive decline associated with ageing by enhancing neurogenesis processes. However, sport-related concussions have been increasingly recognised as a pressing public health concern, not only due to their acute impact but also, more importantly, due to mounting evidence indicating an elevated risk for the development of neurological sequelae following recurrent h

Apophyseal injuries in soccer players.

Soccer is the most popular sport worldwide, and it is associated with high injury rates, with most of these injuries occurring in the lower extremities. Particularly, in youth soccer players with immature skeleton, the physeal plate is two to five times weaker than the surrounding fibrous structures, and therefore more vulnerable to injury. The physeal plate consists of epiphyses and apophyses, with the former serving as tendon attachment sites and being subject to traction forces. There are two types of apophyseal injury: (i) apophyseal avulsion, which consists of an acute separation across t

Upper Extremity Injuries in Soccer.

Upper limb injuries in soccer represent only a marginal portion of injuries, however this is mainly true for outfield players. Goalkeepers are reported to have up to 5 times more upper extremity injuries, many of them requiring substantial time-loss for treatment and rehabilitation. The most common upper extremity injury locations are the shoulder/clavicle followed by the hand/finger/thumb, elbow, wrist, forearm, and upper arm. The mechanism of injury, presentation, physical examination, and imaging features all play a significant role in reaching the correct diagnosis. Taking to consideration

[Feet dermatophytosis in soccer players].

Athletes present risk of cutaneous mycosis. A study was carried out with 23 soccer players using clinical and mycological examination (direct microscopic examination and culture) and nail clipping. Eighteen (78.26%) did not present mycosis; two (8.70%) presented tinea pedis, and three (13.04%) presented onychomycosis associated to tinea pedis, mainly for Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Infected tinea pedis has produced cellulitis in one of the athletes. It is necessary to create an educative program of skin care during sports practice.

Scaphoid fractures in soccer goalkeepers.

The growing popularity of soccer in this country has led to an increasing number of soccer-related injuries. Epidemiologic studies report that soccer-related musculoskeletal injuries most frequently involve the lower extremities. These range from 56% to 95% of soccer injuries and player-to-player contact is the most common mechanism of injury. Upper extremity musculoskeletal injuries are less frequent, but have been reported, with goalkeepers being the most susceptible. There is a paucity in the literature regarding bony injuries about the wrist and hand among goalkeepers. The purpose of this

Social Hostility in Soccer and Beyond.

Social hostility is seldom expressed overtly. More often than not, individuals try to get their hostile message across without risking violent altercations. However, subtle and relatively covert hostility is not easy to research. We suggest a novel way with the SoMi paradigm, a social decision making task that offers participants the opportunity to be socially mindful or socially hostile by leaving or limiting choice to others. Sampling a general population we find that, relative to friends and strangers, foes are indeed met with greater social hostility (Study 1). Focusing on the highly compe

The biomechanics and imaging of soccer injuries.

Soccer is one of the most popular sports worldwide and requires the player to have considerable stamina while superimposing sprinting, jumping, tackling, rapid changes of direction, and kicking. This contact sport carries a significant risk for acute and overuse injuries, with the lower limb the region most frequently injured. This article discusses the biomechanics and current role of imaging in the management of several specific soccer injuries highlighting injuries of the ankle, pelvis, and groin and specific muscle and tendon injuries commonly encountered in this athletic population.

Soccer injury in the lower extremities.

Information about soccer injuries is required to develop prevention and rehabilitation programmes. Most soccer injuries occur in the lower extremities. This type of injury is reviewed here. Definitions of injury, injury rate, injury percentage, mechanism of injury, anatomical region of injury, type of injury, and severity of injury are summarised. In each section, a description and summary of the data are provided. Finally, the limitations of the studies and suggestions to improve the investigation of soccer injuries are provided.

Heading and head injuries in soccer.

In the world of sports, soccer is unique because of the purposeful use of the unprotected head for controlling and advancing the ball. This skill obviously places the player at risk of head injury and the game does carry some risk. Head injury can be a result of contact of the head with another head (or other body parts), ground, goal post, other unknown objects or even the ball. Such impacts can lead to contusions, fractures, eye injuries, concussions or even, in rare cases, death. Coaches, players, parents and physicians are rightly concerned about the risk of head injury in soccer. Current

Incidence of injury in indoor soccer.

All injuries occurring over a 7-week period at a local indoor soccer arena were documented for analysis of incidence rates. All injury rates were calculated per 100 player-hours. The overall injury rates for male and female players were similar, 5.04 and 5.03, respectively. The lowest injury rate was found among the 19- to 24-year-old athletes and the highest injury rate was found among the oldest age group (> or = 25 years). Collision with another player was the most common activity at the time of injury, accounting for 31% of all injuries. The most common injury types were sprains and muscle

The incidence of ankle sprains in soccer.

This study investigated the relationship between exposure time and ankle sprains in soccer. Forty-one teams (639 players) from four male senior soccer divisions at different levels of skill (divisions I-VI) were followed prospectively for 1 year. The exposure to soccer and the number of injuries per player were higher in higher divisions, but the injury incidence, percentage of ankle injuries and incidence of ankle injuries were the same at different levels of skill. Of all injuries 17 to 20% were ankle sprains and the incidence varied between 1.7 to 2.0 ankle injuries per 1,000 hours of expos

Soccer and Risk of Cardiovascular Events.

BACKGROUND: Physical and emotional stress have been associated with an increased incidence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Sporting events such as soccer matches can cause spectators to experience cardiovascular events. The objective of the present study was to determine whether an association of this type existed during a Spanish league competition. METHODS: We recorded data from patients who were admitted with ACS during 2018 - 2020. Patients were divided into two groups: those who were admitted on the day the local team played and those who were admitted on nonmatch days. We determined v

Soccer Injuries in Children and Adolescents.

Participation in youth soccer in the United States continues to increase steadily, with a greater percentage of preadolescent participants than perhaps any other youth sport. Despite the wide-ranging health benefits of participation in organized sports, injuries occur and represent a threat to the health and performance of young athletes. Youth soccer has a greater reported injury rate than many other contact sports, and recent studies suggest that injury rates are increasing. Large increases in the incidence of concussions in youth soccer have been reported, and anterior cruciate ligament inj

Foot and Ankle Injuries in Soccer.

The ankle is one of the most commonly injured joints in soccer and represents a significant cost to the healthcare system. The ligaments that stabilize the ankle joint determine its biomechanics-alterations of which result from various soccer-related injuries. Acute sprains are among the most common injury in soccer players and are generally treated conservatively, with emphasis placed on secondary prevention to reduce the risk for future sprains and progression to chronic ankle instability. Repetitive ankle injuries in soccer players may cause chronic ankle instability, which includes both me

Sensory Reweighting for Upright Stance in Soccer Players: A Comparison of High and Low Exposure to Soccer Heading.

The purpose of this study was to compare sensory reweighting for upright stance between soccer players who report higher soccer heading exposure to those who report lower soccer heading exposure. Thirty participants completed a self-reported questionnaire to estimate the number of soccer headers experienced over the previous year and were divided into "low exposure" and "high exposure" groups based on their responses. Sensory reweighting for upright stance was assessed by simultaneously perturbing visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive systems. The visual stimulus was a sinusoidal translation

Plantar loading in the youth soccer player during common soccer movements and risk for foot injury.

INTRODUCTION: Soccer players are at high risk of stress injuries in the foot. While most research addresses this issue in professional athletes, there is little information concerning young athletes. As soccer is practiced around the world since early infancy, we set out to determine whether young soccer athletes are susceptible to increased foot loading that increase risk factors for foot injuries in a similar manner as reported by the literature to the adult athlete. METHODS: twenty-six male adolescents (mean age 16 years old) were organized into two groups: soccer players (n = 13) and cont

Patellar tendinopathy in young elite soccer- clinical and sonographical analysis of a German elite soccer academy.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of patellar tendinopathy is elevated in elite soccer compared to less explosive sports. While the burden of training hours and load is comparably high in youth elite players (age < 23 years), little is known about the prevalence of patellar tendinopathy at this age. There is only little data available on the influence of age, the amount of training, the position on the field, as well as muscular strength, range of motion, or sonographical findings in this age group. The purpose of the present study was to examine the above-mentioned parameters in all age groups of a

Soccer health, performance, and injury prevention in highly trained youth soccer players: a public health approach.

BACKGROUND: The transition from youth academy participation to elite senior professional soccer is marred by physical volatility, non-linear development, and elevated injury risk, placing the long-term well-being of young athletes at the intersection of sports science and public health. Traditional chronological age group categorization exacerbates selection bias through the Relative Age Effect (RAE) and often fails to safeguard growing athletes from workload-induced injuries. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate a multi-center, maturation-indexed public health intervention protocol designe
