Social competence in children with IDDM and asthma: child, teacher, and parent reports of children's social adjustment, social performance, and social skills.

Used Cavell's (1990) model of childhood social competence to compare the social competence in peer relations of 25 children (ages 8-10 years) with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), 19 children with asthma, and 24 physically healthy children. Children were individually matched for economic status, race, gender, and age. Children, their parents, and their teachers completed measures of children's social adjustment, social performance, and social skills in peer relations. Contrary to hypotheses, no differences between the groups of children were noted on any of the measures of social co

Still lonely: Social adjustment of youth with and without social anxiety disorder following cognitive behavioral therapy.

Social experiences are an integral part of normative development for youth and social functioning difficulties are related to poor outcomes. The goal of this paper was to compare social experiences of youth across anxiety diagnoses and examine whether treatment is helpful in improving social functioning. Ninety-two children (age 7-12 years; 58% male; 87.0% White) with a primary diagnosis of generalized anxiety d

Social Risk Adjustment and Bonus Eligibility in Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.

IMPORTANCE: The Medicare Advantage (MA) star ratings program determines eligibility for quality bonus payments that directly affect plan revenue, benefit generosity, and market competitiveness. To improve fairness, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced the Categorical Adjustment Index (CAI) in 2017, which adjusts ratings based on enrollee social risk factors. How these adjustments have affected bonus eligibility for MA contracts over time remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between CAI adjustments and bonus eligibility in the MA star ratings program a

The relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder symptom subtypes and social adjustment.

BACKGROUND: Although it has been widely established that poor social functioning is a characteristic of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), little research has examined the relationship between OCD symptom subtypes and domains of social functioning. Thus, the present study sought to examine the specific ways in which impairment in social adjustment occurs in each symptom subtype of OCD. METHODS: A total of 325 adult participants with a primary diagnosis of OCD were included in the study. Hierarchical linear regressions were used to compare the extent to which OCD symptom subtypes predicted s

The Social Distribution of Quality-Adjusted Life Expectancy Among Social Deprivation Subgroups in China.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate disparities in quality-adjusted life expectancy (QALE) across social deprivation subgroups in China using the County-level Social Deprivation Index 2020 (CSDI 2020). METHODS: Mortality data from the 2021 Chinese Death Surveillance System were linked with a national EQ-5D-5L health utility survey. Mortality underreporting was calibrated using model life tables and benchmarked against official statistics. Health utilities were modeled using ordinary least squares regression incorporating age-deprivation interactions. QALE was estimated via the Sullivan method. Additional

Social support and psychological adjustment: A quantitative synthesis of 60 meta-analyses.

Social support is the degree to which people are accepted by, cared for, and attended to by important others and is one of the most popular constructs in the psychological canon. This project synthesized data from 60 meta-analyses, which included over 2,700 studies and 2.1 million participants, to evaluate the association of social support with psychological adjustment. Results from a second-order meta-analysis indicated that, overall, social support yielded a robust association with psychological adjustment, r = .24, 95% CI [.22, .26]. Effects of social support were detectable across several

Social support as a multifaceted concept: examination of important dimensions for adjustment.

Four commonly used operationalizations of the social support concept: network contact frequency, satisfaction with support (including nine dimensions), perceived availability of support, and use of support, were related to two measures of psychological adjustment (Beck Depression Inventory and Symptom Checklist-90) and to one measure of physical adjustment (Cornell Medical Index). Subjects were 68 45- to 85-year-old, highly stressed care-givers to spouses with Alzheimer's disease. Results indicate that of the four operationalizations, Satisfaction with Support was the only significant predicto

The global structure of classroom social networks predicts academic and psychosocial adjustment.

Humans are deeply social, and in early life, classroom friendships shape academic and socio-emotional development. Classroom peer ecologies describe the social structure in which individual relationships are situated and which form the context for student learning and development within these classrooms. Yet, research has only begun to explore how these global social network structures are related to classroom-level outcomes. Using a large-scale dataset of 35,038 students in 1,433 classrooms, we extracted 314 social network metrics from four different network types (i.e. friendship, rejection,

The shadow of parental phubbing on adolescents' psychological adjustment: roles of problematic social media use and social support.

BACKGROUND: Parental phubbing— the act of being occupied with a phone, while ignoring and disregarding their children’s in-person interactions —has emerged as an important problem in today’s tech-dominated world, likely being associated with adolescents’ emotional and mental well-being. Therefore, the current study examines the link of perceived parental phubbing with psychological adjustment among adolescents, while discovering the parallel mediating roles of problematic social media use and social support. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study a total of 429 (53.1% female, 46.9% male) Turki
