Most adolescents experience cyberhate primarily as bystanders. Understanding their behavior, particularly their defending behaviors, is crucial to mitigate the phenomenon and its negative effects. While prior studies have explored factors influencing these responses, further research is needed to understand how these factors interact within robust theoretical frameworks. To address this gap, this study examined adolescents' defending behaviors to cyberhate through three psychological theories: (1) the Theory of Normative Social Behavior (TNSB; social norms); (2) Social Learning Theory (SLT; so

The current longitudinal study (n = 98) utilized a developmental cognitive neuroscience approach to examine whether and how variability in social perception is linked to social behavior in early human development. Cortical responses to processing dynamic faces were investigated using functional near-infrared spectroscopy at 7 months. Individual differences in sociability were measured using the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire at 18 months. Confirming previous work with infants and adults, functional near-infrared spectroscopy results show that viewing changing faces recruited superior t

Social behaviors are dramatically influenced by variations in mating systems that shape sex differences in the neural substrates underlying such displays. In polygamous species, distinct evolutionary pressures on males and females produce pronounced behavioral and anatomical sexual dimorphism, supported by strongly sexually differentiated social behavior and social decision-making networks at levels of brain structure, connectivity, physiology, and gene expression. By contrast, socially monogamous species display more similar or monomorphic social behaviors-such as shared parenting, convergent

The endogenous aspect of social influence, reflected in the spontaneous alignment of behaviors within close social relationships, plays a crucial role in understanding human social behavior. In two studies involving 222 human subjects (Study 1: n = 175, 106 females; Study 2: n = 47, 33 females), we used a longitudinal behavioral study and a naturalistic stimuli neuroimaging study to investigate the endogenous consumer behavior similarities and their neural basis in real-world social networks. The findings reveal that friends, compared with nonfriends, exhibit higher similarity in product evalu

Many sex differences in brain and behavior are established developmentally by the opposing processes of feminization and masculinization, which manifest following differential steroid hormone exposure in early life. The cellular mechanisms underlying masculinization are well-documented, a result of the fact that it is steroid-mediated and can be easily induced in newborn female rodents via exogenous steroid treatment. However, the study of feminization of particular brain regions has largely been relegated to being "not masculinization" given the absence of an identified initiating trigger. As

The neuropeptide arginine-vasopressin (AVP) is well known for its peripheral effects on blood pressure and antidiuresis. However, AVP also modulates various social and anxiety-related behaviors by its actions in the brain, often sex-specifically, with effects typically being stronger in males than in females. AVP in the nervous system originates from several distinct sources which are, in turn, regulated by different inputs and regulatory factors. Based on both direct and indirect evidence, we can begin to define the specific role of AVP cell populations in social behavior, such as, social rec

OBJECTIVES: To examine the characteristics of children with coexisting tics and autism spectrum disorder and determine if children with tics have deficits in social behavior.
METHODS: Descriptive study of children referred for tics over 18 months. Parents completed the Social Responsiveness Scale and the Social Communications Questionnaire; children screening positive on these measures were evaluated for autism spectrum disorder. Characteristics of children who were diagnosed with both disorders are described. Subscales scores on the Social Responsiveness Scale for children with tics without

Organization in hierarchical dominance structures is prevalent in animal societies, so a strong preference for higher positions in social ranking is likely to be an important motivation of human social and economic behavior. This preference is also likely to influence the way in which we evaluate our outcome and the outcome of others, and finally the way we choose. In our experiment participants choose among lotteries with different levels of risk, and can observe the choice that others have made. Results show that the relative weight of gains and losses is the opposite in the private and soci

Understanding predisposing factors for meningococcal carriage may identify targets for public health interventions. Before mass vaccination with meningococcal group C conjugate vaccine began in autumn 1999, we took pharyngeal swabs from approximately 14,000 UK teenagers and collected information on potential risk factors. Neisseria meningitidis was cultured from 2,319 (16.7%) of 13,919 swabs. In multivariable analysis, attendance at pubs/clubs, intimate kissing, and cigarette smoking were each independently and strongly associated with increased risk for meningococcal carriage (p<0.001). We assessed the relationship between social behavior and the menstrual cycle in 11 adult female vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus) living in an established, stable social group. The findings indicated that fluctuations in ovarian steroids are accompanied by behavioral changes in vervet monkeys. A significant increase in aggressive action, avoidance of social overtures, and retreats from threat occurred during the late luteal phase. However, the social environment can greatly affect behavior independent of the phase of the menstrual cycle. The 10 nondominant (or subordinate) indivi

This study examined the effect of varying rearing and testing conditions on guinea pig aggression, courting behavior, endocrine responses and body weight. Pairs of 7-8-month-old males were placed in chronic confrontations for 6-50 days in 2 m2 enclosures. Social behavior was recorded with a total of 882 h observation time. Body weight as well as plasma glucocorticoid, testosterone and norepinephrine titers were determined for each male 20 h before, and 4, 52 and 124 h after, the onset of the chronic encounters. Three experiments were conducted: in Experiment I, 7 pairs of males, each male rais

The present study investigated the hypothesis that mild hypertensives display a distinctive response pattern to interpersonal stress that includes: inadequate social skills, negative cognitive set and cardiovascular hyperreactivity. After completing a set of questionnaires measuring anxiety and cognitive style, subjects monitored interpersonal stress in the natural environment. Following this, blood pressure and heart rate were recorded while subjects interacted with trained role-players in two types of role-play situations: individualized high distress and low distress situations. Hypertensiv

An experimental misattribution paradigm proved to be a significant intervention treatment of altering social participation among dispositionally shy women. When specific arousal symptoms previously associated with their social anxiety were misattributed to a nonpsychological source, high-frequency noise, these extremely shy women behaved as if they were not shy. Their verbal fluency and interactional assertiveness resembled that of not-shy comparison women given the same treatment. Moreover, their scores on these measures were significantly elevated from the low levels recorded by shy controls

A social episode model of sexual behavior is proposed with emphasis placed on arousal as a crucial variable. This model argues against a disease or deficiency concept of homosexuality. However, the authors also hold that it may be coercive to push clients to accept their homosexuality, and that a therapist should adequately respond to a valid sexual orientation request. The social-sexual episode is divided into two relatively independent stages, preparatory and consummatory. A mathematical analysis is included, and the model is related to Freeman and Meyer (1975) wherein changes in sexual pref

OBJECTIVES: Recognition of the social behaviors is a multifaceted function on the borderline between neuroscience and social science. In neurological patients, it may be influenced by brain damage, cognition, and psychological distress. This study aimed to clarify whether social behavior recognition can be preserved in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and whether empathy, executive functions and anxiety may play an influential role.
METHODS: The Social Situations Test (SST), Empathy Questionnaire (EQ), State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Phonemic Word Fluency (PWF), and Raven Colo

Reactive, as opposed to proactive, behavior during social interactions has been investigated in the study of aggression, but it is virtually unexplored in relation to other kinds of social behavior. Little is known about brain underpinning of these processes. In this study, we used a virtual interaction model to manipulate the emotional display of the interaction partner and to register actor's responses to these manipulations. EEG was recorded throughout the experiment. After the experiment, participants filled in the IPIP Big-Five Factor Markers. Multilevel mediation analysis using emotional

BACKGROUND: Intolerable pain is often reported in suicide notes. Moreover, the frequency of life events preceding a suicidal act is high, especially interpersonal difficulties. Such adversity is the source of psychological or social pain.
METHODS: We propose a narrative review to discuss the role of pain in the suicidal process while having a focus on social ties.
RESULTS: Using Ecological Momentary Assessment in suicide attempters it has been shown that being alone increased suicidal ideation while being with close others significantly reduced this risk. At a neuroanatomical level, suicidal

It is known that the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is crucially involved in emotion regulation. However, the specific role of the OFC in controlling the behavior evoked by these emotions, such as approach-avoidance (AA) responses, remains largely unexplored. We measured behavioral and neural responses (using fMRI) during the performance of a social task, a reaction time (RT) task where subjects approached or avoided visually presented emotional faces by pulling or pushing a joystick, respectively. RTs were longer for affect-incongruent responses (approach angry faces and avoid happy faces) as com
