There has been an increasing recognition among both medical and psychological professionals, as well as the public media, of a concerning trend for child and adolescent users of audiovisual-based, algorithmic social media platforms (e.g., TikTok) to present with or claim functional psychiatric impairment that is inconsistent with or distinct from classic psychiatric nosology. In this short communication, we provide a detailed historical overview of this transdiagnostic phenomenon and suggest a conceptual model to organize thinking and research examining it. We then discuss the implications of

We incorporated strategies based on relational and interpersonal circumplex research within a standard cognitive-behavioral regimen for Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder (GSAD, Generalized Social Phobia) to determine whether these techniques increased the social approach behaviors that facilitate relationship development. Individuals seeking treatment for GSAD were randomly assigned to either the integrated interpersonal cognitive-behavioral group treatment (ICBT) or a wait list condition (WL). Results revealed that the interpersonal techniques were readily implemented by the majority of pat

Bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder commonly co-occur. Each disorder is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, which are worsened by co-occurrence of the disorders. Emotional dysregulation, suicidality, and disrupted circadian rhythm are key aspects of psychopathology associated with both conditions. A novel psychotherapy combining elements of two evidence-based treatments (i.e., dialectical behavior therapy [DBT] for borderline personality disorder and social rhythm therapy [SRT] for bipolar disorder) is described. Unlike either treatment alone, the new therapy,

The temperamental trait behavioral inhibition (BI) is related to the development and maintenance of anxiety, particularly much so to social anxiety disorder. We investigated if BI and social anxiety disorder predicted cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) outcomes for youth anxiety. Youth (N = 179; Mage = 11.6 years) were assessed 4 years following a randomized controlled CBT effectiveness trial. BI was measured by the parent-reported Behavioral Inhibition Questionnaire at baseline. The outcomes were diagnostic recovery, youth- and parent-reported anxiety symptoms, and clinical severity at post-t

The aim of the present study was to compare academic competence and social adjustment of students with learning disabilities and two groups of students with behavior disorders. The sample consisted of 31 boys with learning disabilities and 52 boys with behavior disorders divided into two subgroups: (a) boys displaying hyperactive behavior (BDH) and (b) boys not demonstrating such behavior (BDNH). Significant differences were found among the three groups using the Classroom Behavior Inventory, and three measures contributed to the significant difference: Hostility versus Consideration, Extrover

BACKGROUND: Despite a dramatic increase in the number of people with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), a substantial number still do not seek help from health professionals, resulting in reduced quality of life. With the growth in popularity of social media platforms, individuals have become more willing to express their emotions through these channels. Therefore, social media data have become valuable for identifying mental health status.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the social media posts and behavioral patterns of people with GAD, focusing on language use, emotional expression, top

This study compared the effects of circumscribed interests (CI) to less preferred (LP) tangible stimuli on the social behaviors of three children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Based on single subject design methodology, the CI experimental sessions resulted in longer durations of target-child initiated social interactions in comparison to LP sessions. In addition, latency of participant's initial social bids to peers was decreased when CI were present. The results suggest that embedding CI into dyadic play situations with typical peers can be used to increase the social behavior childr

A biological-environmental interaction currently provides the best explanation of an anxiety disorder's evolution. In this sense, anxiety disorders are like other medical disorders for which a person may have a predisposition. Our knowledge of the evolution of anxiety disorders would be enhanced by the ability to identify those persons predisposed to anxiety and to identify such "proneness" before an anxiety disorder emerges in adulthood. We discuss the developmental aspects of panic disorder and social phobia, in particular findings suggesting that behavioral inhibition in children may be a p

Most individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) do not receive any type of treatment. Reasons include logistical barriers (e.g., geographic location, travel time), fear of stigmatization, and fear of the social interactions associated with seeking treatment. Videoconferencing technology holds great promise in the widespread delivery of evidence-based treatments to those who would otherwise not receive treatment. This pilot study assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of an acceptance-based behavioral intervention using Skype videoconferencing to treat adults with gen

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal functioning is central to social anxiety disorder (SAD). Empirical examinations of interpersonal behaviors in individuals with SAD have frequently relied on analogue samples, global retrospective reports and laboratory observation. Moreover, research has focused on avoidance and safety behaviors, neglecting potential links between SAD and affiliative behaviors.
METHOD: The influence of situational anxiety and emotional security on interpersonal behaviors was examined for individuals with SAD (n=40) and matched normal controls (n=40). Participants monitored their beha

People with social anxiety disorder (SAD) use different types of safety behaviors that have been classified as avoidance vs. impression management. The current study investigated differences in safety behavior subtype use in 132 individuals with principal diagnoses of social anxiety disorder (SAD, n = 69), major depressive disorder (MDD, n = 30), and nonpatient controls (n = 33) across two social contexts: an interpersonal relationship-building task (social affiliation) and a speech task (social performance). We examined whether diagnostic groups differed in safety behavior subtype use and whe

Social experiences are an integral part of normative development for youth and social functioning difficulties are related to poor outcomes. Youth with anxiety disorders, and particularly social anxiety disorder, experience difficulties across many aspects of social functioning that may place them at risk for maladjustment. The goal of this paper was to compare social experiences of youth across anxiety diagnoses and examine whether treatment is helpful in improving social functioning. Ninety-two children (age 7-12 years; 58% male; 87.0% White) with a primary diagnosis of generalized anxiety d

OBJECTIVE: There is growing interest in the role of transdiagnostic processes in the onset, maintenance, and treatment of mental disorders (Nolen-Hoeksema & Watkins, 2011). Two such transdiagnostic processes-rumination and reappraisal-are the focus of the present study. The main objective was to examine the roles of rumination (thought to be harmful) and reappraisal (thought to be helpful) in adults with social anxiety disorder (SAD).
METHOD: We conducted a randomized controlled trial of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with 75 adults with SAD and examined pre- to post-CBT changes as well a

The observer-rated Social Performance Rating Scale (SPRS) indexes anxious behaviors exhibited in social contexts. Although the SPRS has been used almost exclusively to study social anxiety disorder (SAD), other emotional disorders are also characterized by heightened responses to social stressors, hinting that the SPRS could serve as a transdiagnostic state measure of behavioral anxiety. To explore this possibility, adults with generalized anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder (n = 105) and adults with no psychopathology (n = 35) delivered a speech to a committee of mock behavioral exp

Adaptive behavior is paramount for independent living and is varyingly impaired in different neurodevelopmental disorders. This study aimed to investigate differences in adaptive behavior between children with autism spectrum disorder and social communication disorder, two conditions characterized by deficits in social communication. Data from 232 children with autism spectrum disorder and 90 children with social communication disorder were analyzed. Adaptive behavior was assessed using the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale-III. Diagnoses were made independently using the Diagnostic and Statist

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of pretreatment characteristics and personality disorders on the onset of response in the treatment of panic disorder.
METHODS: The data of 73 out-patients with panic disorder who had completed at least 6 weeks of a randomized trial of 24 weeks of either paroxetine only or paroxetine combined with cognitive group-therapy were analyzed in a Cox proportional hazards model.
RESULTS: The likelihood of having responded to treatment (defined by a CGI rating of improvement) was more than twice as high for patients without a personality dis

OBJECTIVE: Resource-oriented cognitive-behavioral therapy (ROCBT) and cognitive therapy (CT) have been shown to be effective treatments for social anxiety disorder. However, so far few studies have examined the long-term effectiveness of these treatments. Thus, there is little information available about the durability of change in treated patients with social anxiety disorder.
DESIGN: This study examined the effectiveness of both treatments at 2-year and 10-year follow-up assessments. Patients who received ROCBT or CT were re-contacted after 2 (n = 51), and 10 years (n = 27), respectively, a

PURPOSE: To evaluate the presence of behavioral inhibition and anxiety disorders during childhood in Brazilian adult patients with panic disorder and social anxiety disorder compared to a control group.
METHODS: Fifty patients with panic disorder, 50 patients with social anxiety disorder, and 50 control subjects were included in the study. To assess the history of childhood anxiety, the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Age Children, Epidemiologic Version (K-SADS-E), and the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents-Parent Version (DICA-P) were used. Mutations in SHANK genes play an undisputed role in neuropsychiatric disorders. Until now, research has focused on the postsynaptic function of SHANKs, and prominent postsynaptic alterations in glutamatergic signal transmission have been reported in Shank KO mouse models. Recent studies have also suggested a possible presynaptic function of SHANK proteins, but these remain poorly defined. In this study, we examined how SHANK2 can mediate electrophysiological, molecular, and behavioral effects by conditionally overexpressing either wild-type SHANK2A or the extrasynaptic SHANK2A(R462X) variant.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) stands as a prevalent psychiatric condition characterized by the apprehension of scrutiny and embarrassment in social settings, leading to anxiety symptoms, avoidance behaviors, and impaired social and occupational functioning. Despite the efficacy of various evidence-based treatments, a substantial portion of patients remain unresponsive. In this study, we used the socially enriched environment test (SEE, developed in our laboratory) to assess behaviors associated with social anxiety disorder after intervention, using various therapeutic strategies. We tested, in
