A randomized trial of attention training for generalized social phobia: does attention training change social behavior?

The use of attention training protocols for the treatment of generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD) is undergoing increased examination. Initial investigations were positive but more recent investigations have been less supportive of the treatment paradigm. One significant limitation of current investigations is overreliance on self-report. In this investigation, we expanded on initial investigations by using a multimodal assessment of patient functioning (i.e., including behavioral assessment). Patients with a primary diagnosis of SAD (n=31) were randomly assigned to eight sessions of atte

Social communication in fragile X syndrome: pilot examination of the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC).

BACKGROUND: Social communication is a key area of difficulty in fragile X syndrome (FXS) and there are not yet adequate outcome measurement tools. Appropriate outcome measures for FXS have been identified as a key area of research interest in order to evaluate future therapeutic trials. The Brief Observation of Social Communication Change-Minimally Verbal (BOSCC-MV), an outcome measure with strong psychometrics developed for autism spectrum disorder, has promise as an outcome measure to assess social communication change with FXS participants. METHODS: We examined the BOSCC-MV via central cod

Assessing reliable and clinically significant change in social phobia: validity of the social phobia and anxiety inventory.

The ability of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (SPAI) to measure change as a function of treatment for social phobia was assessed. In addition to determining treatment sensitivity of the SPAI, changes over the course of treatment were examined to determine if they were reliable and clinically significant. The results indicated that although a number of measures showed statistically significant change, only on the SPAI was that change reliable and clinically significant. The use of outcome measures that are reliable and clinically significant for social phobia as well as other disorders

Friendship Diversity and Adolescents' Civic Action and Commitment to Social Change.

This study examined whether racial and ethnic friendship diversity predicted adolescents' civic action and commitment to social change, and the pathways leading to these outcomes. Using 2 years of data from a large, diverse sample of high school students (N = 3322; 47% female; Mage at T1 = 17.53; 11% Black/African American, 16% East/Southeast Asian, 36% Latiné, 24% White, 12% Multiracial/Biracial), findings revealed that friendship diversity at T1 (11th grade) predicted higher civic action and commitment 1 year later at T2 (12th grade). Across two mediation models, these associations operated

Change in danger cognitions in agoraphobia and social phobia during treatment.

Cognitive theories of anxiety emphasise the differences in anxious concerns and symptomatology across the anxiety disorders. The nature and extent of danger appraisal in social phobics and agoraphobics was examined and compared with that of a non-phobic group of adult stutterers. All groups were measured before, during and after treatment. Results showed that the form of danger appraisal was related to the fears exhibited, reductions in the particular appraisals of danger were associated with reductions in specific fears, and specific patterns of danger appraisal emerged. Agoraphobics' concern

Social structure, infectious diseases, disasters, secularism, and cultural change in America.

Why do cultures change? The present work examined cultural change in eight cultural-level markers, or correlates, of individualism in the United States, all of which increased over the course of the 20th century: frequency of individualist themes in books, preference for uniqueness in baby naming, frequency of single-child relative to multichild families, frequency of single-generation relative to multigeneration households, percentage of adults and percentage of older adults living alone, small family size, and divorce rates (relative to marriage rates). We tested five key hypotheses regardin

Morals, medicine and change: morality brokers, social phobias, and French psychiatry.

This paper will examine how French neurotics are being transformed into 'social phobics' and how the appearance of this group may be tied to new personal and social ideals. There are many people and factors that contribute to this changing definition of mental illness. Amongst these, I will focus on the role of three groups who are most vocally acting as morality brokers in the creation of these new subjects: psychiatrists, patients' groups and pharmaceutical companies.

Long term disability and social status change after Guillain-Barré syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Even if the majority of patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) have a favourable functional outcome some residual motor and sensory signs and symptoms may remain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term effect of GBS on daily life, working activities, hobbies and social status and the presence of residual symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy patients with GBS enrolled in a case-control study were examined. Information on signs or symptoms during the acute phase of the disease was retrieved from medical records and an ad-hoc questionnaire administered during hospi

Neural sensitivity to social feedback and adaptations to changing social contexts in adolescence.

Adolescence has long been recognized as a period of heightened social concern that can lead to negative outcomes including risk-taking and internalizing distress. More recently however, there has been an emerging focus on identifying how enhanced social attunement can promote social connections and prosocial behavior, enhancing wellbeing. In this paper, we argue that neural sensitivity to social evaluation functions as a differential susceptibility factor and propose a model to test whether neurally sensitive adolescents evidence greater changes in psychosocial function as their interpersonal

Laboratory rhesus macaque social housing and social changes: Implications for research.

Macaque species, specifically rhesus (Macaca mulatta), are the most common nonhuman primates (NHPs) used in biomedical research due to their suitability as a model of high priority diseases (e.g., HIV, obesity, cognitive aging), cost effective breeding and housing compared to most other NHPs, and close evolutionary relationship to humans. With this close evolutionary relationship, however, is a shared adaptation for a socially stimulating environment, without which both their welfare and suitability as a research model are compromised. While outdoor social group housing provides the best appro

Social expectations as a possible mechanism for adult personality change: Limited empirical evidence for the social investment principle.

OBJECTIVE: Personality traits change in both mean levels and variance across the life span but the mechanisms underlying these developmental trends remain unclear. Social Investment Principle (SIP) suggests that social expectations drive personality changes in adulthood. Accordingly, we tested whether differences between personality traits in social expectations for them can explain their different change trajectories in young adulthood. METHODS: A pool of 257 personality items was used to measure personality traits' means and variances (N = 1096), and levels expected by friends, partners and

Playing for Change: A New Approach to Social Determinants of Health Education.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students often have limited opportunities to apply social determinants of health (SDOH) concepts to patient experiences and clinical reasoning. This study evaluated a facilitated, game-based learning intervention to reinforce person-centered, socially responsive care. METHOD: A mixed-methods pretest-posttest design was used with junior-level undergraduate nursing students at a public university. Students participated in a structured board game during class. Matched pre/post surveys (n = 47) were analyzed using paired-samples t-tests, and open-ended reflections underwent co

Change in gaze-based attention bias in adolescents with Social Anxiety Disorder.

Although attention bias (AB) toward threat has been associated with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), concerns regarding the ability of current measures to detect change in AB following treatment exist. We sought to examine change in bias, as measured via eye-tracking, in adolescents with SAD receiving either attention-bias modification training (ABMT) or attention-control training (ACT). Gaze-based AB was associated (r = -0.361) with symptoms of social anxiety prior to treatment, whereas there was no association between bias as measured via dot probe and social anxiety. Moreover, gaze-based bias

Exploring the process of change in emotion-focused therapy for social anxiety.

Objective: This study examined purported change mechanisms in emotion-focused therapy for social anxiety disorder. Methods: The sample included nine clients who had participated in a multiple-baseline case study trial examining the efficacy of emotion-focused therapy for social anxiety disorder (SAD). Multilevel analyses were conducted to examine the trajectories of emotions over the course of treatment, and whether primary adaptive emotions in a given session predicted levels of SAD symptoms, self-criticism, and self-reassurance over the course of the following week. Results: Findings showed

Changes in disease patterns and related social trends.

Both the material and non-material aspects of social life are viewed as determinants of major transformations in the patterns of fatal disease and injury. A 'worst case' scenario for the burden of fatal disease is taken as a poor agrarian society precariously dependent on starchy staples and a narrow range of other foods. In such a society life expectancy may be as low as 20. However in many 'pre-modern' societies the regime of roughly matching fertility and mortality levels was set at a 'submaximal' level, with completed fertility rates moderated by marriage conventions. The relative importan

Harnessing deep learning to monitor people's perceptions towards climate change on social media.

Social media has become a popular stage for people's views over climate change. Monitoring how climate change is perceived on social media is relevant for informed decision-making. This work advances the way social media users' perceptions and reactions towards climate change can be understood over time, by implementing a scalable methodological framework grounded on natural language processing. The framework was tested in over 1771 thousand X/Twitter posts of Spanish, Portuguese, and English discourses from Southwestern Europe. The employed models were successful (i.e., > 84% success rate) in
