The role of the mPFC in the social influence of majority and expert opinion.

Individual attitudes and preferences are easily affected by social information. In a world where information sharing and dissemination are extremely convenient, social influence has played a greater role than in any previous era. Previous studies have suggested that the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) participates in mediating the tendency towards social conformity. However, the specific role of this brain area is still unknown, and it is not clear whether various types of external information influences share a mechanism. In this research, we aimed to use transcranial direct current stimulati

Psychosocial correlates and predictors of AIDS risk behaviors, abortion, and drug use among a community sample, of young adult women.

Relations among latent constructs of Social Conformity, Sensation Seeking, Polydrug Use, Sexual Experience, Abortion, and Risky AIDS Behaviors were examined among a community sample of women (N = 438, mean age = 25.5 years) using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and predictive structural equation models (SEM). In the CFA, Risky AIDS Behavior was strongly related to more Polydrug Use and less Social Conformity and modestly related to Sexual Experience and Abortions. In SEMs, Social Conformity significantly predicted less Risky AIDS Behavior and less Polydrug Use but did not predict Abortions.

Masculine Norms and Their Associations With Social Anxiety and Body Appreciation Among College Men in the United States.

Previous research has identified the link between conformity to masculine norms and negative mental health outcomes. The present study thus examined how conformity to eight distinct masculine norms is associated with social anxiety and body appreciation among a sample of 271 college men living in the United States. College men living in the United States filled out an online questionnaire that assessed the variables of interest. Our main study variables-Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory, Social Phobia Inventory, and Body Appreciation Scale-2-were analyzed cross-sectionally using linear h

A Qualitative Study of Drug Treatment Conformity Behavior among Young Drug Users Who Are in Recovery in China.

In response to social concerns about young drug users, this study aimed to qualitatively explore the types of drug treatment conformity behaviors and the processes of behavior formation among this population. Twenty-one young drug users were selected through purposive sampling, in-depth interviews were conducted using a semi-structured approach, and the data were then analyzed. The social conformity theory is used as the framework of the analysis, and the results indicate that drug treatment behaviors can be differentiated by the three types of motivation that produce conformity with drug trea

Behavioral and functional connectivity basis for peer-influenced bystander participation in bullying.

Recent studies have shown that the reactions of bystanders who witness bullying significantly affect whether the bullying persists. However, the underlying behavioral and neural mechanisms that determine a peer-influenced bystander's participation in bullying remain largely unknown. Here, we designed a new 'catch-ball' task where four players choose to throw a sequence of normal or strong (aggressive) balls in turn and examined whether the players (n = 43) participated in other players' bullying. We analyzed behaviors with a computational model that quantifies the tendencies of a participant's

Socially Learned Attitude Change is not reduced in Medicated Patients with Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is often associated with distinctive or odd social behaviours. Previous work suggests this could be due to a general reduction in conformity; however, this work only assessed the tendency to publicly agree with others, which may involve a number of different mechanisms. In this study, we specifically investigated whether patients display a reduced tendency to adopt other people's opinions (socially learned attitude change). We administered a computerized conformity task, assumed to rely on reinforcement learning circuits, to 32 patients with schizophrenia or schizo-affective diso

Compulsory Citizenship Behavior and Facades of Conformity: A Moderated Mediation Model of Neuroticism and Citizenship Pressure.

Drawing on the social exchange theory, this study investigates how compulsory citizenship behavior (CCB) produces facades of conformity through citizenship pressure, and whether neuroticism moderates the relationship among them. This study surveyed 356 employees (259 males, 97 females; average age 37.7 years) of a northern Taiwanese corporation to investigate the relationship among CCB, citizenship pressure, and facades of conformity. The study found that neuroticism moderates the strength of the indirect effect of CCB and facades of conformity through citizenship pressure, such that the media

A longitudinal examination of palatable eating motives during emerging adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Four motives address reasons people eat palatable foods: to enhance social experiences (social), experience rewarding effects (enhancement), conform to pressure (conformity), or alleviate negative emotions (coping). It is unknown whether motives change following college entry. PARTICIPANTS: College freshmen (N = 103) at a large university. METHODS: Participants attended three laboratory visits. RESULTS: Linear mixed models indicated that enhancement and social motives were significantly lower at the middle (b values = -0.241 to -0.197; p values = .004-.027) and end (b values = -0

Prevalence, motivation, psychological distress, and gender differences of problematic social media use among Chinese college students.

Problematic social media use (PSMU) presents a substantial public health concern due to its pervasive negative impacts. While psychological distress and specific social media use motives have been implicated as risk factors, prevalence rates and the nuanced role of gender have shown inconsistent findings globally. Crucially, these complex interrelationships between PSMU, use motives (i.e., coping, conformity, enhancement, and social), distress symptoms, and gender differences remain largely underexplored in Chinese college student populations. To address this, our anonymous, web-based, cross-s

When Others Agree More Closely: Judgment Similarity Influences Conformity.

Conformity is strongly shaped by perceived consensus, yet prior research has predominantly examined this process in discrete-choice contexts, where consensus is typically operationalized as the size of a uniform majority. In continuous real-world environments, however, social judgments naturally vary, making judgment similarity a potentially important cue for consensus. The present study investigated whether similarity among others' judgments modulates conformity. Across two perceptual estimation experiments, participants first estimated the location of a briefly presented target and then revi

Neural representations of popularity and leadership status relate to conformity in daily life.

Individuals are motivated to increase their social status. To succeed in this pursuit, people must track information about others in their social sphere, monitor group norms, and adjust their behavior strategically. This study employed functional MRI and ecological momentary assessment methods in a sample of 92 college students belonging to 9 social groups to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying these processes and their relationship to conformity in the context of alcohol use. When young adults passively looked at faces of their real-life social group peers, brain systems implicated in

Social motives for drinking in students should not be neglected in efforts to decrease problematic drinking.

High heavy drinking prevalence persists in students. Recently, drinking motivation received a lot of attention as an important determinant. Enhancement and coping motives are mostly positively related and conformity motives are mostly negatively related with heavy drinking. Relations are less clear for social motives. This study aimed at gaining more insight in the role of drinking motives in heavy drinking students. Overall, 15 897 Belgian university and college students (mean age: 20.7, SD = 2.6) anonymously participated in an online survey. Logistic regressions tested relationships between

Problematic social media use is statistically predicted by using social media for coping motives and by positive reinforcement processes in individuals with high COVID-19-related stress levels.

It is important to understand the relationship between stress and problematic use of social media (PUSM). However, no study to our knowledge has yet investigated the longitudinal relationship between perceived stress and PUSM via positive and negative reinforcement processes. The present study investigated relationships between COVID-19-pandemic-related stress and PUSM and possible moderating effects of motives for using social media (positive and/or negative reinforcement) during and following a COVID-19-pandemic-related lockdown. Six-hundred-and-sixty participants initially completed a surve

Meta-analyses of the relationship between conformity to masculine norms and mental health-related outcomes.

Despite theoretical postulations that individuals' conformity to masculine norms is differentially related to mental health-related outcomes depending on a variety of contexts, there has not been any systematic synthesis of the empirical research on this topic. Therefore, the authors of this study conducted meta-analyses of the relationships between conformity to masculine norms (as measured by the Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory-94 and other versions of this scale) and mental health-related outcomes using 78 samples and 19,453 participants. Conformity to masculine norms was modestly a

Social Anxiety and Alcohol Use and Related Problems among Black Adults: Differential Roles of Motives by Sex.

Background: Black individuals who consume alcohol are at risk of experiencing alcohol-related problems. Psycho-sociocultural models of substance use posit that these individuals may continue to drink despite alcohol-related problems to cope with psychological distress. Emerging data indicate that social anxiety is one type of distress that may play an important role in drinking behavior among Black adults. Objectives: Yet despite evidence that drinking to cope varies as a function of sex among predominantly White samples, this is the first known study to test whether socially anxious Black wom

Cannabis-related impairment and social anxiety: the roles of gender and cannabis use motives.

Social anxiety appears to be especially related to cannabis-related problems, yet the nature of this association remains unclear. Some data suggest that socially anxious men may be especially vulnerable to problematic cannabis use. The current study examined the relations between social anxiety, cannabis use and use-related problems, and motives for cannabis use by gender among 174 (42.5% female) current (past-month) cannabis users. Among men, social anxiety was significantly, positively related to the number of cannabis-related problems and coping and conformity motives. Coping and conformity

Drinking motives among patients with alcohol use disorder: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: This current two-year clinical study among adult patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) examined drinking motives and their cross-sectional and longitudinal associations with alcohol consumption, severity of AUD, and other alcohol-related problems. Enhancement, coping, conformity, and social motives have been found to impact alcohol use, yet longitudinal studies on drinking motives in clinical populations are sparse. METHODS: This observational study used data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted in Stockholm, Sweden, from 2017 to 2022, including 250 participants wi

Alcohol use and drinking motives across five countries: a post-COVID-19 pandemic update.

Background: It is necessary to understand drinking motives to inform tailored interventions counteracting high-risk alcohol use and alcohol use disorder. Research suggests that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, drinking to cope with the current situation (i.e. coping motive) increased. This was alarming since the coping motive is a predictor of alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. Objective: In the current study, we aimed to elucidate whether this COVID-19-induced increase in coping-motivated alcohol use outlasted the COVID-19 pandemic in the USA, Great Britain, Mexico, Spain, and Germany. Challenging the Thrift Paradigm: When Decreasing Income Trajectory Drives Expensive Non-Conformity.

In an increasingly complex modern social information environment, in which consumers are exposed to both changes in economic conditions and pervasive social comparison cues, there remains limited research exploring the relationship between financial anticipation, social signals, and consumption choices. Using an experimental approach, we examine how income trajectories and social information shape consumption choices. Participants in our online decision task were randomly exposed to information indicating either increasing or decreasing income trajectories, alongside social information about t
