Disparities in social determinants of health (SDOH) play a significant role in causing health inequities globally. The physical environment, including housing and workplace environment, can increase the prevalence and spread of fungal infections. A number of professions are associated with increased fungal infection risk and are associated with low pay, which may be linked to crowded and sub-optimal living conditions, exposure to fungal organisms, lack of access to quality health care, and risk for fungal infection. Those involved and displaced from areas of armed conflict have an increased ri

INTRODUCTION: Identifying patient populations most affected by adverse social determinants of health can direct epidemiologic investigation, guide development of tailored interventions, and improve clinical care and outcomes. This study explores how demographic characteristics are associated with specific types-and cumulative burden-of adverse social determinants of health among Veterans seeking Veterans Health Administration health care.
METHODS: Data included electronic health records for 293,872 patients of Veterans Health Administration facilities in one region of the country between Octo

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects approximately 20% of women after childbirth and has complex etiology. Existing predictive models of PPD lack training on large, national datasets and comprehensive integration of clinical and social determinants. To address this gap, we developed machine learning (ML) models using the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System survey (2016-2021) including 51,917 US patients. ML used medical history, pregnancy complications, social factors, and infant outcomes as features, with self-reported PPD as the outcome. We evaluated several ML approaches, including g

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between neighborhood-level social determinants of health and stillbirth.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of deliveries that occurred at a gestational age of at least 20 weeks within a five-hospital system (2012-2022). Electronic health record data mapped to the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model were geocoded using addresses at the time of delivery and linked to neighborhood health indices, which included the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), Maternal Vulnerability Index (MVI), and Social Vulnerability Index (SVI)

BACKGROUND: Understanding how social determinants of health (SDoH) affect clinical outcomes is important in achieving health equity. The impact of SDoH on pediatric transplant recipients is poorly understood. We investigated the effect of SDoH on pediatric kidney allograft outcomes.
METHODS: In a single-center retrospective pilot cohort study, data were extracted from electronic health records using bioinformatics.
INCLUSION CRITERIA: patients 0-18 years old who received a kidney transplant at our center from 9/25/2012-12/31/2022. Exposures were insurance type, distance to transplant center,

Postinjury infection continues to plague trauma and emergency surgery patients fortunate enough to survive the initial injury. Rapid response systems, massive transfusion protocols, and the development of level 1 trauma centers, among others, have improved the outcome for millions of patients worldwide. Nonetheless, despite this excellent initial care, patients still remain vulnerable to postinjury infections that can result in organ failure, prolonged critical illness, and even death. While risk factors have been identified (degree of injury, blood loss, time to definitive care, immunocomprom

In this paper we explore how aspects of the social world may be linked to mental health and psychiatric morbidity and propose that conditions should be created which allow individuals and communities greater opportunities for self-care and self-management. Specifically the focus is on social connections, disability and homelessness and work stress. There is a clear policy direction pursued by many national governments and international organizations such as the World Bank to build healthy communities. The environment as it relates to health and well-being can be thought of in terms of physical

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetic ciliopathy characterized by a diverse clinical presentation with marked respiratory complications and adversely impacts quality of life. However, the lived experience of individuals with PCD extends beyond biological complications, intersecting with social determinants of health (SDoH). The role of SDoH in the context of PCD remains insufficiently characterized.
OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the current picture of SDoH insecurity among primary caregivers of pediatric PCD/highly likely PCD patients.
METHODS: The

Chronic inflammatory diseases such as autoimmune disorders, cancer, cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative disorders are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the industrialized world. Socioeconomically disadvantaged communities bear a disproportionately high burden of these inflammatory diseases. This review synthesizes evidence linking various domains of the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH)-economic stability, education access and quality, healthcare access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context-to inflammatory pathways and me

BACKGROUND: The uveitides are a group of intraocular inflammatory diseases which can lead to blindness without treatment. It has been shown that socioeconomic status, health literacy, and access to healthcare play a pivotal role in the prevalence, severity, and treatment outcomes in ophthalmic conditions. We review the current literature on the impact of social determinants of health (SDoH) in patients with uveitis.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted utilizing PubMed, Google Scholar, and Embase databases in July 2024. Inclusion criteria included studies written in English,

BACKGROUND: Many women still deliver outside a health facility in Ghana, often under unhygienic conditions and without skilled birth attendants. This study aims to examine the social determinants influencing the use of health facility delivery among reproductive-aged women in Ghana.
METHODS: Nationally representative data from the 2014 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey was used to fit univariable and multivariable logistic regression models to estimate the influence of the social determinants on health facility delivery. Andresen's health care utilization model was used as the conceptual fr

This case presentation of a 19-year-old Ethiopian woman diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma reveals the barriers the patient has to medical treatment, including poverty and a lack of national infrastructure. The patient lives a life of poverty, and the outcome of her illness is a result of her being unable to overcome barriers to accessing health care due to inability to afford transport, lodging and treatment. In this case, the patient's vulnerability to disease due to her poverty is not overcome because of lack of infrastructure. The infrastructure fails to develop because of inadequate

Finding ways that health care organizations can address the social determinants of health is a hot topic in health policy circles these days. It long has been known that social and economic factors have a significant impact on health, but addressing these factors traditionally has been the purview of government and philanthropic organizations, not health care providers. Why are policymakers now looking to health care to play a role?

This article evaluates and elucidates the intersections across social and economic determinants of health and social structures that maintain current inequities and structural violence with a focus on the impact on imMigrants (immigrants and migrants), refugees, and those who remain invisible (e.g., people without immigration status who reside in the United States) from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. Psychology has a history of treating individuals and families without adequately considering how trauma is cyclically and generationally maintained by structural violence, ine

IMPORTANCE: Social determinants of health (SDOH) influence child health. However, most previous studies have used individual, small-set, or cherry-picked SDOH variables without examining unbiased computed SDOH patterns from high-dimensional SDOH factors to investigate associations with child mental health, cognition, and physical health.
OBJECTIVE: To identify SDOH patterns and estimate their associations with children's mental, cognitive, and physical developmental outcomes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study included children aged 9 to 10 years at baselin
