Racial discrimination and anger expression: a preliminary test of a social cognitive model.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to discrimination is associated with greater use of anger suppression (anger-in) and outward expression (anger-out), both of which are reflexive anger expression styles that are linked with relationship difficulties and poorer health. Social cognitive processes, such as heightened vigilance for social threats and rumination, may link discrimination to mental health, but little is known about the role of social cognition in the associations of discrimination to anger expression. METHOD: A racially diverse community sample (nanalytic  = 155, 67% women, 39% Black, 39% Lati

Intersectional Social Identity, Perceived Discrimination, and Mental Health Among Older Adults in India.

Although adverse mental health outcomes linked to discrimination among older adults have been well acknowledged, our understanding of the discrimination-mental health link in non-Western paradigms is still limited. Using data from the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI) with an intersectional approach, we examined how perceived discrimination was linked to the level of depressive symptoms among older adults in India and how this association was moderated by caste and gender. Our ordered logistic regression models indicated that higher levels of perceived discrimination are associated with

Experience of social discrimination correlates with neurometabolism: a pilot study in heroin addicts.

Experimental social neuroscience has shown that being socially excluded is processed in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). We hypothesize that a chronic form of social exclusion resembling one aspect of social stigmatization is associated with altered neural plasticity reflected by neurometabolic alterations in the ACC. To test this hypothesis, a highly stigmatized patient group of heroin addicts (N = 15) during opiate maintenance therapy rated a questionnaire about being stigmatized, and neurometabolic markers in the ACC were determined using (1)H MR spectroscopy. We found a negative correl

The impact of social deprivation on paranoia, hallucinations, mania and depression: the role of discrimination social support, stress and trust.

The negative implications of living in a socially unequal society are now well documented. However, there is poor understanding of the pathways from specific environmental risk to symptoms. Here we examine the associations between social deprivation, depression, and psychotic symptoms using the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, a cross-sectional dataset including 7,353 individuals. In addition we looked at the mediating role of stress, discrimination, trust and lack of social support. We found that the participants' neighbourhood index of multiple deprivation (IMD) significantly predict

Online Racial Discrimination and College Student Mental Health: Social Support as a Moderator.

Many college students experience racism and discrimination, which negatively impacts their mental health. As COVID-19 has brought about increased reliance on virtual spaces, increased online racial discrimination (ORD) has also become a more prevalent issue. ORD may be defined as online behaviors that demean or marginalize individuals or groups based on race. It may occur on social media, through text messaging, online videos/games, and/or online chat rooms. Research has shown that direct ORD predicted mental health difficulties, but the link between vicarious ORD and mental health was less co

[HIV-Related Stigma and Discrimination in Spain: Seven Years of the Social Pact for Non-Discrimination and Equal Treatment Associated with HIV].

The stigma and discrimination associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection constitute one of the main challenges for controlling the HIV pandemic globally. Despite biomedical advances that have turned HIV infection into a manageable chronic condition in contexts with access to treatment, the social and cultural dimensions of HIV continue to affect fundamental rights and the quality of life of people living with HIV, thereby hindering the achievement of the goal of eliminating AIDS as a Public Health threat by 2030. In Spain, the institutional response to this issue has evolved

Adolescent Mental Health in the Context of Discrimination: Examining Multiracial Racial Socialization.

There is limited research on racial socialization and its potential protective effect on youth mental health within Multiracial families. With a sample of Multiracial families (N = 209; 46% female youth), we investigated associations between adolescent experiences of racial discrimination (parent and youth reports at ages 14 and 16) and racial socialization (observational task at age 14) on depressive symptoms (youth report at age 16). Multiracial youth with more experiences of discrimination had more depressive symptoms. Multiracial youth who received more racial socialization in the form of

Caste-, work-, and descent-based discrimination as a determinant of health in social epidemiology.

Social epidemiology explores health in the context of broad social determinants of health, where the boundary lines between health and politics appear increasingly blurred. Social determinants of health such as caste, discrimination, and social exclusion are inherently political in nature, hence it becomes imperative to look at health through a broader perspective of political philosophy, ideology, and caste that imposes enormous obstacles to a person's full attainment of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. Caste is descent based and hereditary in nature. It is a character

[Trait guilt discriminate between anthropophobic tendency and social anxiety in adolescents].

This study examined the role of trait guilt in discriminating between anthropophobic tendency and social anxiety. 212 University and technical college students (103 males and 109 females) were administered a questionnaire with a trait guilt scale, an anthropophobic tendency scale, and a social anxiety scale. Trait guilt showed a positive correlation with anthropophobic tendency when the influence of social anxiety was controlled. When the influence of Anthropophobic tendency was controlled, trait guilt did not correlate as highly with social anxiety. These results were discussed related to cul

Children's discrimination of expressions of emotions: relationship with indices of social anxiety and shyness.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct an exploratory investigation of possible relationships between individual levels of social anxiety and the ability to classify emotional expressions in a group of schoolchildren observing pictures of children of similar age. METHOD: One hundred forty-nine second- and third-grade schoolchildren underwent a facial expression discrimination trial. Children were characterized on the basis of the number of spontaneous comments they made during a pause in the trial, and on their scores on the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, the Stevenson-Hinde and Glover Shyness-to-the-Unfamil

Convergent, discriminant, and criterion-related validity of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory.

The psychometric properties of the Social Phobia Anxiety Inventory (SPAI) were assessed in a sample of participants who either had a primary diagnosis of social phobia or were normal volunteers. Positive evidence was obtained on the SPAI's concurrent and predictive convergent validity: it was significantly correlated with other measures of social anxiety obtained from self-report questionnaires of social impairment and with behavioral assessment measures administered in conjunction with a conversation role-play, including measures of negative thinking, subjective anxiety, and self-perceived sk

Belonging and life satisfaction among migrants: the roles of identity, social comparison, and discrimination.

This study examines how belonging, identity orientations, social comparison patterns, and perceived discrimination are associated with life satisfaction among Turkish migrants in the Netherlands. The analysis is based on cross-sectional survey data from 1,006 respondents. Ordered logit models are used to assess the associations between identity orientations, comparison patterns, perceived discrimination, and two outcomes: life satisfaction and sense of belonging to the Netherlands. The results indicate that identifying as Dutch or as a world citizen, as well as placing greater importance on co

The Neural Signature of Social Dominance Discrimination by Means of Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation.

Hierarchy is a pervasive feature of social organization. The ability to rapidly discriminate hierarchical information is critical for social interaction. Here, we took advantage of a special technique in electroencephalography (EEG) known as fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS). We used this technique, which captures the automatic perception of faces, to explore the neural signature of social dominance discrimination. A stream of computer-generated faces was presented at 6 Hz, i.e. six faces/second. In the experimental condition, faces alternated from high to low social dominance within a s

Discrimination and social anxiety disorder among African-Americans, Caribbean blacks, and non-Hispanic whites.

The present study investigated the relationship between discrimination and social anxiety disorder (SAD) in a sample of African-Americans, Caribbean blacks, and non-Hispanic whites using the National Survey of American Life, the most comprehensive study of psychopathology among American blacks to date (N = 6082). Previous work has highlighted a strong association between discrimination and mental health symptoms (Keith, Lincoln, Taylor, and Jackson [Sex Roles 62:48-59, ]; Kessler, Mickelson, and Williams [J Health Soc Behav 40:208-230, 1999]; Soto, Dawson-Andoh, and BeLue [J Anxiety Disord 25:

Social capital, anticipated ethnic discrimination and self-reported psychological health: a population-based study.

This study investigates the association between anticipated ethnic discrimination and self-reported psychological health, taking generalized trust in other people into consideration. The 2004 Public Health Survey in Skåne, Sweden, is a cross-sectional postal questionnaire study including a total of 27,757 respondents aged 18-80 with a 59% response rate. Multivariate analyses of anticipated discrimination and self-reported psychological health were performed using logistic regressions in order to investigate the importance of possible confounders (age, country of origin, education and horizonta

Fine social discrimination of siblings in mice: Implications for early detection of Alzheimer's disease.

The ability to distinguish between individuals is crucial for social species and supports behaviors such as reproduction, hierarchy formation, and cooperation. In rodents, social discrimination relies on memory and the recognition of individual-specific cues, known as "individual signatures". While olfactory signals are central, other sensory cues - such as auditory, visual, and tactile inputs - also play a role. However, little research has explored the fine discrimination of individuals with overlapping cues, such as siblings or cohabitating mice. This study investigates whether mice can dis

Responsive social support to disclosures of racial discrimination: Expectations and implications for well-being.

OBJECTIVES: Social support helps people of color (POC) cope with stressors such as racial discrimination. Yet when POC disclose lived experiences of racism, confidants may fail to provide support that meets disclosers' emotional needs. Drawing on theories of shared reality and emotion reappraisal, we compare two emotion-focused social support approaches: validation (conveying that recipients' feelings or responses are appropriate) and reframing (seeking to reduce recipients' distress by offering a more positive perspective). METHOD: Two POC samples of Canadian young adults (35% South Asian, 3

Social Support Is Protective Against the Effects of Discrimination on Parental Mental Health Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Discrimination, or unfair treatment based on individual characteristics such as gender, race, skin color, and or sexual orientation, is a pervasive social stressor that perpetuates health disparities by limiting social and economic opportunity and is associated with poor mental and physical health outcomes. AIMS: The purpose of the present study is to (1) examine the association between maternal experiences of discrimination and paternal experiences of discrimination; (2) explore how discrimination relates to parental (maternal and paternal) stress and depressive symptoms; and (3)

BACKGROUND: Black Americans face significant discrimination associated with mental health disorder, which may be exacerbated among sexually victimized people. Social support may buffer that relationship. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from a retrospective cohort study were analyzed to examine if discrimination and sexual victimization overlap to exacerbate symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to determine the extent to which social support moderated that association among Black women living in Baltimore, Maryland [138 non-abused (no physical/sexual victimization
