Psychopathic Traits, Externalizing Problems, and Prosocial Behavior: The Role of Social Dominance Orientation.

Psychopathic traits in community and referred youths are strongly associated with severe externalizing problems and low prosocial behavior. However, less is known about the mechanisms that may link youth psychopathy and these outcomes. Social dominance orientation (SDO), defined as the general individual orientation toward unequal and dominant/subordinate relationships, might represent a valuable construct to explore to better understand the association between psychopathic traits, externalizing problems, and prosocial behavior. Based on this, the current study aimed to investigate the relatio

Differential expression of social dominance as a function of age and maltreatment experience.

Recent perspectives on social dominance in normative populations have suggested a developmental progression from using primarily coercive strategies to incorporation of more socially competent strategies to attain material and social resources. Parental influences on the resource control strategies children use have been proposed but not investigated empirically. The present study examined age- and gender-related differences in dominance strategies in 470 children from high-risk neighborhoods who were between 6 and 13 years of age, approximately half of whom had experienced maltreatment. A Q-s

The dominance behavioral system and manic temperament: motivation for dominance, self-perceptions of power, and socially dominant behaviors.

UNLABELLED: The dominance behavioral system has been conceptualized as a biologically based system comprising motivation to achieve social power and self-perceptions of power. Biological, behavioral, and social correlates of dominance motivation and self-perceived power have been related to a range of psychopathological tendencies. Preliminary evidence suggests that mania and risk for mania (manic temperament) relate to the dominance system. METHOD: Four studies examine whether manic temperament, measured with the Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS), is related to elevations in dominance motiva

Vasopressin mediates nonapeptide and glucocorticoid signaling and social dynamics in juvenile dominance hierarchies of a highly social cichlid fish.

Early-life social experience can strongly affect adult behavior, yet the behavioral mechanisms underlying developmental trajectories are poorly understood. Here, we use the highly social cichlid, Burton's Mouthbrooder (Astatotilapia burtoni) to investigate juvenile social status and behavior, as well as the underlying neuroendocrine mechanisms. We placed juveniles in pairs or triads and found that they readily establish social status hierarchies, with some group structural variation depending on group size, as well as the relative body size of the group members. Next, we used intracerebroventr

Egalitarianism as hierarchy control: Predictive social minds and the evolution of anti-dominance institutions.

Stibbard-Hawkes and von Rueden redefine egalitarianism as a process rather than an outcome. We extend this framework by arguing that egalitarian societies represent cognitive-ecological equilibria in which evolved psychological systems regulate dominance hierarchies. The six identified processes correspond to distinct neurocognitive mechanisms for hierarchy suppression, interpretable as distributed strategies for managing hierarchical risk within predictive processing.

Structural connectivity of grandiose versus vulnerable narcissism as models of social dominance and subordination.

Social dominance and subordination have been linked to fronto-limbic and fronto-thalamic networks and are related to phenotypes such as grandiose vs. vulnerable narcissistic traits. The latter have been linked to clinical features such as empathy and emotional regulation. In this study we tested the hypotheses that narcissistic traits are associated with white matter integrity in fasciculus uncinate, cingulum, and anterior thalamic radiation (ATR). We applied the Pathological Narcissism Inventory (PNI) to assess narcissistic traits in a sample of 267 psychiatrically healthy individuals. We use

Social dominance in monkeys: Lack of effect on ethanol self-administration during schedule induction.

Nonhuman primate models of alcohol use disorder (AUD) frequently utilize schedule-induced polydipsia to initiate ethanol drinking. Previous research has demonstrated that specific characteristics of drinking during the final phase of induction, in which monkeys consume 1.5 g/kg of ethanol per day, can predict whether monkeys become heavy or light drinkers when they subsequently have free access to ethanol (22 hours per day; Baker, Farro, Gonzales, Helms, & Grant, 2017; Grant et al., 2008). A monkey's position in the social dominance hierarchy is another factor associated with ethanol drinking

Social dominance in children with cerebral palsy during a problem-solving task with peers.

PURPOSE: Children with cerebral palsy tend to have poorer social competence outcomes than their peers without a disability in mainstream school settings. To understand their social competence, this study compared children with cerebral palsy with paired children without cerebral palsy with respect to their ability to access resources, defined here as "social dominance", in a problem-solving situation. METHOD: Children with cerebral palsy were randomly paired to a peer (teammate) and put in a competitive context where each team of two children was instructed to solve an impossible problem. To

Prenatal fentanyl exposure affects social dominance and myelination patterns in the adult mouse brain.

Fentanyl use has reached epidemic proportions, and more adults are administering the drug illicitly. Despite its high use rates, very little is known of the long-term effects following prenatal fentanyl exposure. Using an oral model of lower-dose prenatal fentanyl administration in mice, we found that fentanyl-exposed offspring developed similarly to their saline-exposed counterparts. In adulthood, there were few significant changes in tests of anxiety- and depression-like behavior, cognition, or ambulatory function. However, fentanyl-exposed mice, specifically males, exhibited significant def

The Neural Signature of Social Dominance Discrimination by Means of Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation.

Hierarchy is a pervasive feature of social organization. The ability to rapidly discriminate hierarchical information is critical for social interaction. Here, we took advantage of a special technique in electroencephalography (EEG) known as fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS). We used this technique, which captures the automatic perception of faces, to explore the neural signature of social dominance discrimination. A stream of computer-generated faces was presented at 6 Hz, i.e. six faces/second. In the experimental condition, faces alternated from high to low social dominance within a s

Excision of mesenteric lymph nodes alters gut microbiota and impairs social dominance in adult mice.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) are central in immune anatomy. MLNs are associated with the composition of gut microbiota, affecting the central system and immune system. Gut microbiota was found to differ among individuals of different social hierarchies. Nowadays, excision of MLNs is more frequently involved in gastrointestinal surgery; however, the potential side effects of excision of MLNs on social dominance are still unknown. METHODS: MLNs were removed from male mice (7-8 weeks old). Four weeks after MLN removal, social dominance test was performed to investigate social domi

Predictors of resistance to equity in public safety policy: The role of social dominance orientation.

In 2021, the Illinois Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today Act (SAFE-T Act), a comprehensive legislation aimed at improving police accountability and promoting fairness in the criminal justice system, was utilized in the current study. The study analyzed data from representative statewide surveys (N=589) to examine what demographics and other variables influence perceptions of public safety reform policies aimed at equity. Results indicate that the majority of Illinois residents (over 70%) endorse measures that seek to enhance individual rights and police accountability. While muc

Exploring neural correlates of social dominance: Insights from behavioral, resting- state EEG, and ERP indices.

Numerous studies have explored the concept of social dominance and its implications for leadership within the behavioral and cognitive sciences in recent years. The current study aims to address the gap regarding the neural correlates of social dominance by investigating the associations between psychological measures of social dominance and neural features among a sample of leaders. Thirty healthy male volunteers engaged in a monetary gambling task while their resting-state and task-based electroencephalography data were recorded. The results revealed a positive association between social dom

A mouse model of Timothy syndrome exhibits altered social competitive dominance and inhibitory neuron development.

Multiple genetic factors related to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been identified, but the biological mechanisms remain obscure. Timothy syndrome (TS), associated with syndromic ASD, is caused by a gain-of-function mutation, G406R, in the pore-forming subunit of L-type Ca2+ channels, Cav 1.2. In this study, a mouse model of TS, TS2-neo, was used to enhance behavioral phenotyping and to identify developmental anomalies in inhibitory neurons. Using the IntelliCage, which enables sequential behavioral tasks without human handling and mouse isolation stress, high social competitive dominance

Shaking the myth: Body mass, aggression, steroid hormones, and social dominance in wild house mouse.

In social mammals, the position of a male in the group's hierarchy strongly affects his reproductive success. Since a high social rank is often gained through competition with other males, selection should favour bigger males over smaller ones. We may therefore predict faster growth and/or delayed sexual maturity in dominant males. Likewise, dominants should have higher levels of testosterone, hormone important in many aspects of male dominance. Less obvious is the relationship between dominance and levels of corticosterone but generally higher concentrations are expected in subordinate indivi

Splenomegaly and other hematological parameters in the socially dominant mouse.

Within a social dominance hierarchy, subordinate mice show hematological changes such as increased erythropoiesis and splenomegaly. The present experiment demonstrates similar findings for the unwounded dominant mouse. In addition, total serum protein, serum albumin and plasma fibrinogen were measured. Male DBA/2j mice were placed into social triads for three 24 hr periods. The resultant dominant and subordinate mice were compared with isolated control mice. Splenomegaly, thymus involution, decreased hematocrit, and increased fibrinogen levels were found in dominant mice. Subordinate mice demo

Food competition, but not other common assays, reveals social dominance in female and male CD1 mice.

Social dominance is fundamental to social organization across species and plays a critical role in shaping behavior, physiology, and health. Despite the complexity of social organization, researchers have successfully developed animal models to investigate social dominance under controlled experimental conditions across a variety of species, including male rodents. However, measures of social rank among female mice remain poorly understood, limiting the generalizability of commonly used social dominance assays. Here, we systematically evaluated four commonly used behavioral assays of social do

Peer victimization and Internet addiction among adolescents: The role of anger rumination and social dominance orientation.

INTRODUCTION: Internet addiction has garnered growing attention in recent years, and peer victimization plays a major contributor to adolescents' Internet addiction. However, little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms in the association between peer victimization and Internet addiction. Guided by cognitive behavioral model and worldview verification model, this study examined a moderated mediation model in which anger rumination at Time 1 (T1) mediated the association between peer victimization at T1 and Internet addiction at Time 2 (T2), and this mediation effect was modera

What is Violence? The Role of Sexism and Social Dominance Orientation in Recognizing Violence Against Women.

Violence against women represents a global public health issue of epidemic proportions, as well as a gross violation of women's human rights. It can take many forms, such as physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. The purpose of the study was to extend past research on recognition of violence against women within the framework of the ambivalent sexism theory and the social dominance orientation (SDO) theory. Specifically, we investigated the following: (a) to what extent different behaviors potentially harming women are recognized as a form of viol

Social dominance and courtship and mating behaviour in rams in non-competitive and competitive pen tests.

A group of 19 Merino rams was used to determine: (i) if body weight, age and testis characteristics are different between high (HR) and low-ranked (LR) rams, and (ii) how the competition between HR and LR rams for oestrous ewes affect their courtship and mating behaviour. Hierarchy was determined using the food competition test. The five first and five last ranked rams were individually exposed to oestrous ewes in pen tests, and the frequency of different courtship behavioural units, mounts and mates, and the time from test onset to each mate was recorded. The sexual behaviour of the five firs
