Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition characterized by underdeveloped social cognition, along with restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. ASD manifests through a range of genetic, environmental, and psychosocial factors, which influence brain development and lead to maladaptive social and behavioral processes. While early diagnosis is common, ASD traits can develop and express themselves through various stages of childhood, driven by dynamic changes in cognitive and social abilities in relation to stressors and challenges. A recent study reports

Fish produce context-specific sounds during social communication, but it is not known how acoustic behaviors have evolved in relation to specializations of the auditory system. Butterflyfishes (family Chaetodontidae) have a well-defined phylogeny and produce pulsed communication sounds during social interactions on coral reefs. Recent work indicates that two sound production mechanisms exist in the bannerfish clade and that other mechanisms are used in the Chaetodon clade, which is distinguished by an auditory specialization, the laterophysic connection (LC). Here, we determine the kinematic a

Social insects provide valuable insights into how coordinated group behavior emerges from simple individual rules. In ants, recruitment strategies are diverse, yet some remain poorly understood from a comparative evolutionary perspective. Social carrying, in which one individual physically transports another, is a widespread recruitment strategy associated with several functions, most commonly nest relocation. Despite extensive descriptive work, its evolutionary origins, variation, and ecological correlates remain unclear. We compiled literature data on worker-worker social carrying in ant spe

The purpose of this research is to examine the evolution of children with problematic sexual behaviour following their participation in a group treatment program. The sample was made up of 43 children (33 boys and 10 girls) with an average age of 9 years, 7 months (SD = 1.85) The evolution of the children is measured administering behavioural rating instruments, both before and after the treatment program, on multiple dimensions of problematic sexual behaviour, externalizing and internalizing problems and social skills. The actual level of the children's participation is documented. The result

Sleep appears to be essential for most animals, including humans. Accordingly, individuals who sacrifice sleep are expected to incur costs and so should only be evolutionarily favoured to do this when these costs are offset by other benefits. For instance, a social group might benefit from having some level of wakefulness during the sleeping period if this guards against possible threats. Alternatively, individuals might sacrifice sleep in order to gain an advantage over mate competitors. Here, we perform a theoretical analysis of the social evolutionary pressures that drive investment into sl

Reconstructions of hominin evolution have long benefited from comparisons with nonhuman primates, especially baboons and chimpanzees. The hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) is arguably one of the best such models, as it exhibits both the male kin bonding and the cross-sex pair bonding thought to have been important in hominin evolution. Here we link processes of behavioral evolution in hamadryas baboons with those in a Plio-Pleistocene hominin, provisionally identified as Homo erectus (sensu lato) - a pivotal species in that its larger body and brain size and wider ranging patterns increased f

Social interaction is a process in which two or more conspecific individual information and engage with one another, mutually influencing each other's behavior. Within this framework, social cognition and social memory constitute fundamental components that enable adaptive social behaviors. Deficits in social cognition and memory have been implicated in various psychiatric disorders since social memory itself represents a core expression of episodic memory. In this review, we summarize the theoretical evolution of understanding the social cognitive memory from the grandmother cell hypothesis t

Imitation and aspiration update rules are frequently observed in human and animal populations. While the imitation process entails payoff comparisons with surroundings, the aspiration process refers to self-evaluation. This work explores the evolution of cooperation in dyadic games under the coexistence of these two dynamics in an infinitely large well-mixed population. Two situations have been explored: (i) individuals adopt either an imitation or aspiration update rule with a certain probability, and (ii) the entire population is divided into two groups where one group only uses imitative ru

Child maltreatment often has a negative impact on the development of social behavior and health. The biobehavioral mechanisms through which these adverse outcomes emerge, however, are not clear. To better understand the ways in which early life adversity affects subsequent social behavior, changes in the neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) in children (n = 73) aged 8.1-11.5 years following a laboratory stressor were examined. Girls with histories of physical abuse have higher levels of urinary OT and lower levels of salivary cortisol following the stressor when compared to controls. Abused and control

Stibbard-Hawkes and von Rueden redefine egalitarianism as a process rather than an outcome. We extend this framework by arguing that egalitarian societies represent cognitive-ecological equilibria in which evolved psychological systems regulate dominance hierarchies. The six identified processes correspond to distinct neurocognitive mechanisms for hierarchy suppression, interpretable as distributed strategies for managing hierarchical risk within predictive processing.

ObjectivesSocial Cognition (SC) can be impaired in Parkinson's Disease (PD), yet its longitudinal evolution relative to cognitive status is unclear. This study examined whether SC deficits in PD patients suffers different changes based on baseline cognitive status and cognitive progression.MethodsIn this observational study 48 non-demented PD patients (32 with normal cognition [PD-CN], 16 with mild cognitive impairment [PD-MCI]), and 22 healthy controls (HC) were assessed at baseline and after three years. SC was assessed for facial emotion recognition (FER), affective and cognitive Theory of

The evolution of life is characterized by major transitions, i.e., the evolution of new targets of selection (e.g., prokaryotes, eukaryotes, multicellular organisms, social insect colonies). They arose when preexisting lower-level units cooperated and gave up the capability to reproduce so that reproductive success is now achieved at the new, joint, higher unit. Currently, increasing confusion exists about major transition in evolution (MTE) that hampers progress in this fundamental research field. Misconceptions partly arose due to inadequate evolutionary reasoning. In addition, pivotal recen

Since its launch in 1989, the Journal of Aging & Social Policy has served as a major outlet for applied research on policies affecting older adults. Yet the thematic trajectory of its archive over nearly four decades has not been mapped systematically. We apply structural topic modeling to 1,023 research articles published from 1989 through October 2025 and assess changes in topic prevalence across five analytic periods. The 31-topic solution was grouped into seven meta-categories, and regression tests were used to evaluate period differences. Politics, Governance & Law declined by 11.9% point

BACKGROUND: In France, differences in cardiovascular risk factor distribution have been observed which might be responsible for some disparities in cardiovascular mortality between social categories. The goal of the study was thus to assess the differences in coronary heart disease (CHD) and cerebrovascular diseases (CVD) mortality according to social category, and to determine their trends over the last 20 years in France.
METHODS: Mortality data for CHD, CVD, diseases of the circulatory system (CS) and all causes mortality (TM) were based on death certificates for 1970, 1980 and 1990, and c

Host-pathogen interactions are often characterized by spatial and temporal fluctuations in host density. Such variability may promote the evolution of phenotypic plasticity in pathogen virulence. However, it remains unclear how pathogens can reliably detect changes in host density. Here we show that some pathogens may exploit social cues, such as the presence of infected hosts, to gain indirect information about transmission opportunities when the density of susceptible hosts fluctuates. Our analysis demonstrates that virulence plasticity does not evolve in constant environments, but temporal

Immersive technologies provide new possibilities to study social dynamics. In this paper, we develop a methodological framework for identifying and describing the evolution of group networks in virtual reality (VR). Leveraging longitudinal data on participants' interpersonal distances obtained in a collaborative virtual environment during a university course about VR we demonstrate how network methods can be applied and used to test propositions of social capital theory. Specifically, we use stochastic actor-oriented models (SAOMs) to explore the formation and change of social ties over time.

Understanding how neural systems evolve to coordinate animal social behavior is a longstanding goal of modern biology. Historically, specializations to the brain are thought to underlie the diversification of social phenotypes, whether this entails the emergence of novel circuits or modifications to existing circuits that underlie motivation, arousal, and stimulus saliency. More recent work expands this purview by considering the whole brain and by exploring phenomena like neural coordination between social partners. Meanwhile, new technologies like single-cell spatial transcriptomics and mach

Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) disrupts our most human social and emotional functions. Early in the disease, patients show focal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and orbital frontoinsula (FI) degeneration, accentuated in the right hemisphere. The ACC and FI, though sometimes considered ancient in phylogeny, feature a large bipolar projection neuron, the von Economo neuron (VEN), which is found only in humans, apes, and selected whales-all large-brained mammals with complex social structures. In contrast to bvFTD, Alzheimer disease (AD) often spares social functioning, and th

The existence and nature of immunity to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are currently unknown; however, neutralizing antibodies are thought to play the major role and data from studying other coronaviruses suggest that partial clinical immunity lasting up to 1 year will occur postinfection. We show how immunity, depending on its durability, may work with current social practices to limit the spread of the virus. We further show that a vaccine that is 50% effective and taken by 50% of the population will prevent further loss of life, providing that social distancing

BACKGROUND: There is little data on how heart failure (HF) symptoms change after hospitalization for HF (HFH) or with social determinants of health (SDOH). Such gaps in knowledge limit the ability of clinicians to intervene earlier to reduce symptoms and prevent rehospitalization.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore HF symptoms from HFH through 6 months postdischarge and explore associations of SDOH and demographic characteristics with symptom trajectories.
METHODS: We used an observational longitudinal design from HFH through 6 months postdischarge in 49 patients with New York H
