Evolutionary multi-agent reinforcement learning in group social dilemmas.

Reinforcement learning (RL) is a powerful machine learning technique that has been successfully applied to a wide variety of problems. However, it can be unpredictable and produce suboptimal results in complicated learning environments. This is especially true when multiple agents learn simultaneously, which creates a complex system that is often analytically intractable. Our work considers the fundamental framework of Q-learning in public goods games, where RL individuals must work together to achieve a common goal. This setting allows us to study the tragedy of the commons and free-rider eff

Cognitive behavioural group treatment for social anxiety in schizophrenia.

Anxiety symptoms reported by individuals with schizophrenia have been traditionally seen as symptoms associated with the principal disorder and therefore not requiring special attention. The primary aim of this paper is to therapeutically target social anxiety symptoms in individuals with schizophrenia in order to determine the effectiveness of the cognitive behavioural group treatment model as an intervention for social anxiety in this participant group. Thirty-three individuals with schizophrenia and co-morbid social anxiety were allocated to a group-based cognitive behaviour (CBGT) interven

Cognitive therapy for social phobia: individual versus group treatment.

Cognitive-behavioural group treatment is the treatment of choice for social phobia. However, as not all patients benefit, an additional empirically validated psychological treatment would be of value. In addition, few studies have examined whether a group treatment format is more effective than an individual treatment format. A randomized controlled trial addressed these issues by comparing individual cognitive therapy, along the lines advocated by Clark and Wells (Clark, D.M. and Wells, A., 1995. A cognitive model of social phobia. In: R. G. Heimberg, M. Liebowitz, D. Hope and F. Schneier (Ed

The Use of Self-Disclosure in Group Therapy: Engaging Social Enactments in Modern Group Treatment.

This paper was originally a panel discussion at the Annual American Group Psychotherapy Association 2025 Conference. Working with enactments of social oppression in groups presents special challenges for group leaders trained to work exclusively within a developmental model. When the group attends to issues of social power, the leader can be seen not only as a transferential figure but also as a representative of an oppressive social class. This shift from developmental to social transference often stimulates anxiety in the group leader, who then struggles with this charged transference. This

Social phobia viewed as a problem in social functioning: a pilot study of group behavioral treatment.

Available treatments of social phobia reduce anxiety and avoidance of social situations. Social functioning however, remains relatively unaffected. This study piloted a behavioral group treatment that aimed at improving patients' individual difficulties in social functioning. Five patients fulfilling DSM-IV criteria for social phobia were selected for treatment by a 16-session behavioral group treatment focusing on improving interpersonal functioning both in specific phobic situations as well as in different spheres of social life in general. Four out of 5 patients completed treatment and show

A Quantitative Index of Sociality and Its Application to Group-Living Spiders and Other Social Organisms.

Species are often classified in discrete categories, such as solitary, subsocial, social and eusocial based on broad qualitative features of their social systems. Often, however, species fall between categories or species within a category may differ from one another in ways that beg for a quantitative measure of their sociality level. Here, we propose such a quantitative measure in the form of an index that is based on three fundamental features of a social system: (1) the fraction of the life cycle that individuals remain in their social group, (2) the proportion of nests in a population tha

Group climate as predictor of short- and long-term outcome in group therapy for social phobia.

A longitudinal study of 80 participants in cognitive and interpersonal group therapy for social phobia was conducted. The aim was to investigate the relationship between group climate and patients' short-term and long-term outcome. Group climate data was collected every other week during treatment, whereas social phobia symptoms were assessed at admission, discharge, and one year follow-up. Abbreviated symptom assessments were performed weekly. Regression analyses and mixed models were used in the analyses. Engagement predicted symptom reduction during treatment, from pretreatment to follow-up

Social group disparities in the incidence and prognosis of oesophageal cancer.

There are substantial disparities in the incidence and prognosis of oesophageal cancer across social population groups, including sex, race/ethnicity, geographical location and socio-economic status. Both squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus are more common in men than in women, but the male predominance in adenocarcinoma is stronger and less well understood. The varying incidence and prognosis of oesophageal cancer across racial/ethnic groups show distinct patterns by histological type. Individuals residing in rural areas have a higher incidence and worse prognosis tha

Sacred values as role-constitutive norms in social groups.

Jara-Ettinger and Dunham propose that institutional cognition tracks roles and their normative expectations. I argue that decentralized roles lacking formal authority require an additional mechanism to stabilize legitimacy. Sacred values - nonnegotiable commitments that impose costly obligations - function as role-constitutive norms that signal intrinsic devotion, thereby determining legitimate role occupancy and preventing free riding on group identities.

Children's understanding of abstract and real-world social groups.

The present work explores how two intuitive theories inform young children's inferences about social groups. In three studies (N = 821), we tested whether 3- to 7-year-old children view novel (Studies 1 and 3), gender (Studies 2 and 3), and racial (Studies 2 and 3) groups as (a) marking individuals who are fundamentally similar to one another and (b) marking patterns of social relationships and interactions. We found evidence for both of these sets of beliefs. Children predicted that ingroup members would be more similar to one another than outgroup members for all of the groups tested. Childr

Social Support and Peer Group Integration of Adolescents with Diabetes.

The aim of this study was to examine, through the roles of peers with regards to diabetes, the relationship between the support perceived by adolescents with diabetes and their peer-group affiliation. This is a descriptive, phenomenological and retrospective study based on a qualitative methodology. In-depth interviews with 15 people aged 18-35 with type 1 diabetes mellitus diagnosed in their childhood or adolescence were carried out. Data was analyzed through the interpretation of general discourses. Peers have considerable influence on adolescents and provide them social support from differe

Group size modulates kinship dynamics and selection on social traits.

An individual's relatedness to its group may change with age due to demographic processes, and such kinship dynamics can shape age-linked social behaviors. Existing models, however, have focused almost exclusively on dispersal and mating, leaving the consequences of group size local variation unexplored. Here, we extend these models to incorporate such variation within a single, genetically connected meta-population. We then contrast predicted kinship dynamics and age-linked selection for helping/harming in coexisting smaller and larger groups in three typical social mammal systems characteriz

Group choice: the ideal free distribution of human social behavior.

Group choice refers to the distribution of group members between two choice alternatives over time. The ideal free distribution (IFD), an optimal foraging model from behavioral ecology, predicts that the ratio of foragers at two resource sites should equal the ratio of obtained resources, a prediction that is formally analogous to the matching law of individual choice, except that group choice is a social phenomenon. Two experiments investigated the usefulness of IFD analyses of human group choice and individual-based explanations that might account for the group-level events. Instead of nonhu

Group Rumination: Social Interactions Around Music in People with Depression.

One of the most important roles that music serves in human society is the promotion of social relationships and group cohesion. In general, emotional experiences tend to be amplified in group settings through processes of social feedback. However, previous research has established that listening to sad music can intensify negative emotions in people with tendencies to rumination and depression. This study therefore investigated the phenomenon of ruminating with music, and the question of whether listening to sad music in group settings provides social benefits for emotionally vulnerable listen

Social media features, perceived group norms, and adolescents' active social media use matter for perceived friendship quality.

INTRODUCTION: Developmental researchers are becoming increasingly interested in the role of social media in adolescents' experiences with their peers; however, to date, few studies have investigated the association between youngsters' interactions with friends online and the perceived quality of their friendship relationships. METHODS: Thus, the current study aims to test the associations between three social media features, as perceived by adolescents, (i.e., availability, quantifiability, visualness) and the quality of adolescents' friendships (in terms of perceived validation, intimacy, co
