Functional Limitations, Social Integration, and Daily Activities in Late Life.

OBJECTIVES: Disability in late life has been associated with increases in receiving care and loss of autonomy. The Disablement Process Model suggests that physical impairments lead to functional limitations that contribute to disabilities in managing household, job, or other demands. Yet, we know surprisingly little about how functional limitations are related to activities throughout the day among community-dwelling adults or the possible moderating role of social integration on these associations. METHODS: Community-dwelling adults (N = 313) aged 65 and older completed a baseline interview

Living arrangements, social integration, and change in functional health status.

Limited prospective data have examined the association between living arrangements and emotional wellbeing. The authors assessed whether older women living with a spouse were less likely to experience a decline in mental health, vitality, or physical function compared with women living alone or with nonspouse others. The association between living arrangement and 4-year change in functional health status was examined prospectively among 28,324 women aged 60-72 years in the Nurses' Health Study. After adjustment for age, baseline function, comorbid conditions, and health behaviors, women living

From social effort to social behavior: An integrated neural model for social motivation.

As humans rely on social groups for survival, social motivation is central to behavior and well-being. Here we define social motivation as the effort that initiates and directs behavior towards social outcomes, with the goal of satisfying our fundamental need for connection. We propose an integrated framework of social motivation which emphasizes the maintenance of optimal connection levels through effort exertion, regulating social approach and avoidance, which allow interpersonal synchrony. Together, these behaviors serve as basic building blocks of social behavior, and give rise to behavior

Factors affecting social integration after road traffic orthopaedic injuries in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Road traffic injuries (RTIs) leading to long-term disability present a significant public health challenge, causing immense personal and societal consequences. Every year, 50 million people are hurt, 1.2 million die, 30% are permanently disabled, and 14% cannot return to work due to road traffic accidents. However, in many developing countries, information on the social integration of patients post-RTI remains limited. This study aimed to identify factors contributing to social integration following road traffic-related orthopedic injuries (RTOI) in Rwanda. METHODOLOGY: A multicen

The Neural Correlates of Face-Voice-Integration in Social Anxiety Disorder.

Faces and voices are very important sources of threat in social anxiety disorder (SAD), a common psychiatric disorder where core elements are fears of social exclusion and negative evaluation. Previous research in social anxiety evidenced increased cerebral responses to negative facial or vocal expressions and also generally increased hemodynamic responses to voices and faces. But it is unclear if also the cerebral process of face-voice-integration is altered in SAD. Applying functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the correlates of the audiovisual integration of dynamic faces a

Integration of Spatial and Social Network Analysis in Disease Transmission Studies.

This study presents a case study of how social network and spatial analytical methods can be used simultaneously for disease transmission modeling. The paper first reviews strategies employed in previous studies and then offers the example of transmission of two bacterial diarrheal diseases in rural Bangladesh. The goal is to understand how diseases vary socially above and beyond the effects of the local neighborhood context. Patterns of cholera and shigellosis incidence are analyzed in space and within kinship-based social networks in Matlab, Bangladesh. Data include a spatially referenced lo

Teenage fertility and its social integration correlates: a control theory explanation.

"This study uses control theory to explain teenage fertility in one [U.S.] southeastern state. Control theory explains deviance from societal norms in terms of weak social bonding or integration. An important assumption of the study is that teenage parenting violates American parenting norms, and can thus be conceptualized as deviant behavior. Consequently, this study hypothesizes that teenage fertility should covary with measures of social integration. This study uses data from 64 parishes in Louisiana, and the results suggest that measures of social integration (i.e., divorce rates, percenta

Socially-integrated transdisciplinary HIV prevention.

Current ideas about HIV prevention include a mixture of primarily biomedical interventions, socio-mechanical interventions such as sterile syringe and condom distribution, and behavioral interventions. This article presents a framework for socially-integrated transdisciplinary HIV prevention that may improve current prevention efforts. It first describes one socially-integrated transdisciplinary intervention project, the Transmission Reduction Intervention Project. We focus on how social aspects of the intervention integrate its component parts across disciplines and processes at different lev

Toward an integrative understanding of social phobia.

Our objective was to examine the neurobiology of social phobia from the perspectives of basic sciences, genetics, immunology, neuroendocrinology, neurotransmission and neuroimaging and to provide an integrated understanding of social phobia in the framework of a hypothetical neural circuit. Family and twin studies provide evidence that social phobia is heritable with significant genetic influence, and molecular genetics offers possibilities in understanding the nature of the trait that is transmitted. The biologic distinctiveness of social phobia from anxiety disorders and physiological valida

Payment Structures That Support Social Care Integration With Clinical Care: Social Deprivation Indices and Novel Payment Models.

The U.S. lags behind other developed countries in the use of indices and novel reimbursement models to adjust for social determinants of health (SDH) in medicine. This may be due in part to the inadequate body of research regarding outcomes after implementation of healthcare payments designed to address SDH. This perspective article focuses on four models employed both internationally and domestically to outline the implementation, successes, limitations, and research needed to support national application of SDH models. A brief history of prior models is introduced as a primer to the current

Social connectedness and digital literacy in later life: the mediating roles of perceived barriers and social integration.

BACKGROUND: Population aging and digital transformation are two major global trends; however, the potential pathways through which social connectedness may be associated with digital literacy in later life remain underexplored. This study examined the mediating roles of perceived barriers and social integration in the relationship between social connectedness and digital literacy among Chinese older adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 505 middle-aged and older educated Chinese adults aged 50-70 years. Digital literacy was assessed across five dimensions. Social conne

Social Integration, Social Support and Incident Type 2 Diabetes: Results from the Prospective Heinz Nixdorf Recall Cohort Study.

Background and Objectives: Aspects of social relationships, like isolation and low social support, have been linked to type 2 diabetes onset, though evidence is inconsistent. We investigated whether social relationships mediate the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and diabetes or interact with SES in relation to diabetes. Materials and Methods: The study included 3642 participants (mean age 58.9 ± 7.6 years, 47.9% male) from the Heinz Nixdorf Recall Study, a population-based cohort in Germany. Baseline examinations took place in 2000-2003 with two 5-year follow-ups. Adjusted rela

Determinants of social health in later life: the roles of family integration, social participation, and psychosocial well-being.

INTRODUCTION: Population aging has intensified scholarly attention towards the social dimensions of well-being in later life. While previous research has largely emphasized physical health and economic security, social health-reflecting individuals' ability to maintain meaningful relationships and social participation-remains comparatively underexplored, particularly among older adults in rural communities. Addressing this gap, the present study investigates how family integration, social participation, and psychosocial well-being contribute to social health in later life. METHODS: We conduct

Social Accountability in Medical Student Scholarly Projects: A Call for Intentional Integration.

BACKGROUND: While social accountability is integrated into clinical training at many institutions, its role in medical scholarly projects remains unexplored. While much has been studied on social accountability in medical education and service, little is known about how it is approached in research. Therefore, we examined whether community partnerships were included in student plans, the community's role in the research process, and health equity outcomes as measures of social accountability. METHODS: We approached this observational study in two stages. In stage 1, we reviewed medical studen

Integration of Multiple Social Cues in Williams Syndrome: Neural and Behavioral Evidence.

The study examined whether the social phenotype in Williams syndrome (WS) arises from atypical perception, attention, or executive function. Adults with WS (n=30) and neurotypical controls (n=32) completed a "Mind Reading" task requiring integration of facial emotions and gaze direction to infer desirability of concurrently presented objects. Participants with WS succeeded on direct gaze trials but performed near chance when disengagement from gaze direction was required. Perceptual (N170), attentional (P3), and emotional (LPP) neural response patterns were comparable between the groups. The d

Audiovisual integration of faces and voices in Chinese individuals with social anxiety.

In our daily lives, we perceive the emotions of others usually through a variety of modalities such as faces, voices, gestures, etc. However, very few studies have investigated the multisensory integration of emotional information. In the current study, we aimed to explored the audiovisual integration of faces and voices in individuals with social anxiety. In Experiment 1, individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and healthy controls (HCs) participated in an emotion categorisation task using static angry and happy faces and voices. The results showed that for angry emotion, compared to a

Age integration in the social convoys of young and late midlife adults.

Homophily on the basis of age is a notable characteristic of social convoys across the life course. Ties to older and younger persons, therefore, are both unusual and potentially provide unique social support resources. This study examined relationships with older, younger, and same-aged non-kin ties among young and late midlife adults. Data came from the University of California Berkeley Social Networks Study (UCNets), a sample of 485 people aged 21-30 and 674 people aged 50-70. A majority of non-kin ties were to people whose age was within 5 years of the participant's own age, although the m

The effect of social integration on outcomes after major lower extremity amputation.

OBJECTIVE: Major lower extremity (MLE) amputation is a common procedure that results in a profound change in a patient's life. We sought to determine the association between social support and outcomes after amputation. We hypothesized that patients with greater social support will have better post amputation outcomes. METHODS: From November 2011 to May 2013, we conducted a cross-sectional, observational, multicenter study. Social integration was measured by the social integration subset of the Short Form Craig Handicap Assessment and Reporting Technique. Systemic social support was assessed

Social integration, psychological distress, and smoking behaviors in a midwest LGBT community.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations have smoking rates twice that of their heterosexual counterparts. To design effective outreach, prevention, and treatments for these individuals, a comprehensive understanding of associated factors is needed. OBJECTIVE: To increase understanding of how social integration and psychological distress are related to smoking behaviors among LGBT populations. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, descriptive study of 135 LGBT adults using an online data collection strategy. Multivariate analyses were performed to examine factors associate
