Connecting the science of reading to social justice: Introduction to the special section.

The science of reading is the consensus of research conducted across multiple disciplines over many years that informs how children learn to read, the types of instructional practices that work best for most students, as well as how to address the needs of students who struggle to learn to read. This body of convergent evidence strongly indicates that approximately 95% of children can be taught to read at or approaching grade level, including students with dyslexia or other learning disabilities (Moats, 2020). Despite this compelling evidence, two-thirds of children cannot read proficiently in

[Who is expert on justice--specialists or the local medical and social observers?].

A young Norwegian father was convicted of having battered his 5 month-old daughter to death. The trial relied heavily on a medicolegal autopsy report, the conclusions of which have been later questioned by clinical specialists. These specialists claim that the child died a natural death from hitherto undiagnosed osteogenesis imperfecta. The correspondence raises the question of why the opinions of local medical instances, and of people who had known the family and the circumstances for a long time, were neglected in favour of the opinions of experts during all phases of the trial. These people

Addressing social and racial justice in public policy for healthy living.

Long-standing health disparities stemming from the historical, inequitable distribution of wealth, power, and privilege in the United States exist across almost every health indicator and outcome. There is a need for equitable policy, systems, and environment changes that are rooted in an understanding of the historical arc of structural racism across obesity prevention and treatment, ending tobacco and nicotine addiction and increasing access to healthy, affordable foods and physical activity opportunities and infrastructure. This paper explores the influence of structural inequities on the p

Patient engagement in fertility research: bench research, ethics, and social justice.

BACKGROUND: Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in research is increasingly being utilized to better connect patients and researchers. The Patient Engagement Studio (PES) supports PPI in research by working directly with researchers throughout various stages of their projects. Recently, two researchers presented to the PES for assistance with their project, Embryo+™. The purpose of Embryo+™ is to decrease miscarriage rates using RNA sequencing technology that screens for the most viable embryos. To date, no examples of PPI directly in the planning or implementation of bench research concernin

HIV and Mass Incarceration: Where Infectious Diseases and Social Justice Meet.

More than 1% of all adults in the United States are currently in a jail or prison. This mass incarceration, particularly of African American men, fosters conditions that facilitate the spread of HIV in communities where both HIV and incarceration are endemic. Recognition of the role of mass incarceration in the perpetuation of the HIV epidemic is essential to development of effective HIV prevention policies.

Social justice interdependence among students in counseling psychology training programs: Group actor-partner interdependence model of social justice attitudes, training program norms, advocacy intentions, and peer relationships.

Counseling psychologists have voiced the importance of nurturing social justice principles in the training of psychologists to better meet diverse people's psychological and social needs. Much of the research on training, however, has been focused on individual factors (e.g., self-efficacy, spirituality). Little empirical evidence exists on the mutual support among students and the role of shared social justice principles in counseling psychology training programs. Thus, we used the group actor-partner interdependence model (GAPIM) to test whether the advocacy intentions of a given student in

Social justice and social determinants of health: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, intersexed, and queer youth in Canada.

TOPIC: While nurses address lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, intersexed, and queer (henceforth LGBTIQ) patients' health needs, the professional nursing practice value of social justice provides a larger role for nurses in identifying and minimizing social barriers faced by LGBTIQ patients. PURPOSE: This paper examines the social and health-related experiences of LGBTIQ youth in Canada, a country which has removed many of the social and legal barriers faced by LGBTIQ in countries such as the United States. An awareness of the Canadian LGBTIQ experience is instructive for nurses in differ

A scoping review on social justice education in current undergraduate dental curricula.

BACKGROUND: A recent shift in educational components within healthcare has pushed dentistry toward a greater understanding of the role of social components on oral health. There has also been an increased awareness of inappropriate conduct among dental students. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A scoping review was conducted to determine if, how, and when social-justice-oriented education has been incorporated into dental curricula worldwide. A systematic and reiterative search of articles was performed on February 22, 2018, and combined quantitative and qualitative synthesis of data. An updated sea

Equitable access to cochlear implants: a perspective on social justice and international obligations.

Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent sensory conditions worldwide, affecting over 1.5 billion people and is one of the main causes of disability. For individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, cochlear implants (CIs) are one of the most effective rehabilitation options as they can significantly improve speech comprehension, language development, quality of life and social inclusion. Despite their clinical value, however, access to CIs remains highly unequal between and within countries, with implantation rates disproportionately favoring wealthier nations and people with a higher s

Academic Freedom Is Social Justice: Sex, Gender, and Cancel Culture on Campus.

I teach in and co-direct the undergraduate program in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. During the promotion of my recent book on testosterone and sex differences, I appeared on "Fox and Friends," a Fox News program, and explained that sex is binary and biological. In response, the director of my department's Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging task force (a graduate student) accused me on Twitter of transphobia and harming undergraduates, and I responded. The tweets went viral, receiving international news coverage. The public attack by the task force director

Social support linking justice beliefs and counsellor well-being in earthquake zones.

Background: Natural disasters profoundly upset moral and psychological stability, positioning mental health professionals in dual roles as both helpers and survivors. After devastating earthquakes in Türkiye, counsellors had to deal with stressors that required both personal resilience and professional stability. Belief in a just world (BJW) and perceived social support (PSS) are two factors that may help sustain psychological well-being (PWB) in the post-disaster context following large-scale earthquakes. However, empirical research examining how moral belief systems and relational resources

"Spinning Their Wheels … "-Influences That Shape How Nurse Educators Teach Social Justice.

Despite institutional claims that social justice is a core professional nursing value, efforts to fulfill this claim remain uneven. The purpose of this study was to examine the circumstances that shape nursing educators' approaches to social justice. In-depth semi-structured interviews with 28 educators teaching theory courses in baccalaureate nursing programs shed light upon the influences that shape how educators integrate social justice. These include formative experiences, institutional factors, and curricular opportunities. Formative experiences include upbringing, educational background,

Social justice considerations for occupational therapy: The role of addressing social determinants of health in unstably housed populations.

BACKGROUND: Populations of those experiencing homelessness in the United States expand beyond those living in shelters and on the streets. Many individuals living in poverty experience housing instability, as well as refugee populations who experience deprivation of social resources due to displacement. These populations are significantly affected by social determinants of health (SDOH). OBJECTIVE: A current policy and literature review was completed to assess prominent SDOH impacting unstably housed populations in the United States, including refugees, encountered in occupational therapy pra

Critical social justice and its cognitive distortions: Diagnosing the Liberal's poor mental health.

This article provides an alternative explanation for potential causes behind the rise in psychiatric diagnoses and poorer mental health outcomes for people who identify as liberal or left-leaning in the United States. Borrowing the concept of cognitive distortions from the well-established psychotherapy modality Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as an analytical tool, this article argues that various strands of the prevailing ideology of Critical Social Justice (CSJ), born out of the liberal left, is infused with various kinds of cognitive distortions, suggesting that CSJ effectively promulga

Social Determinants of Health and 1-Year Buprenorphine Initiation Among Justice-Involved Veterans.

IMPORTANCE: Justice-involved veterans (JIVs), with incarceration history or other legal involvement, experience high opioid use disorder (OUD) rates but low uptake of medications for OUD (MOUD). Given its common use, assessing the associations of buprenorphine medication for OUD (hereafter buprenorphine) with social determinants of health (SDOH) is critical. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between SDOH and buprenorphine initiation, and to estimate the 1-year initiation rate across demographic subgroups. Qualitative Research in Correctional Settings: Researcher Bias, Western Ideological Influences, and Social Justice.

Within correctional settings, justice, health, and academic systems overlap for forensic nurse researchers. Within an environment that stresses social control, a researcher's implicit views, perspectives, and biases can lead to altering the authentic (re)presentation of a participant's experience. Researcher bias may be influenced by predominately western ideologies and societal discourses. Qualitative methods to mitigate and raise awareness around researcher biases include bracketing, unstructured interviews, diverse peer review, thinking inductively, investigator responsiveness, and critical

A Grounded Theory of Sexual Minority Women and Transgender Individuals' Social Justice Activism.

Psychosocial benefits of activism include increased empowerment, social connectedness, and resilience. Yet sexual minority women (SMW) and transgender individuals with multiple oppressed statuses and identities are especially prone to oppression-based experiences, even within minority activist communities. This study sought to develop an empirical model to explain the diverse meanings of social justice activism situated in SMW and transgender individuals' social identities, values, and experiences of oppression and privilege. Using a grounded theory design, 20 SMW and transgender individuals p

Pursuing Social Justice through Public Health: Gender and Sexual Diversity Activism in Malawi.

African lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) organizations face various strategic dilemmas in contexts characterized by political hostility to gender and sexual dissidents. In Malawi, one such context, we examine how an LGBTIQ social movement organization (SMO) in Malawi, the Centre for the Development of People (CEDEP), navigated one particular strategic dilemma-the dilemma of whether to adopt a less politicized public-health approach or a more nimble, grassroots-oriented, and social-justice approach to their advocacy work-and the consequences of the organization'
