Preschoolers use exploratory approaches to selective social learning.

Preschoolers evaluate many cues when making inferences about others (Harris et al., 2018). It is unclear whether children's understanding of inference-making is sophisticated enough that they alsoseek outthe most relevant cues for making specific inferences. Here, we tasked 4- and 5-year-olds and adults with a modified epistemic trust paradigm in which they were told to select one of two informants to help them learn about novel objects. However, before doing so, participants were told that they could learn up to three pieces of information about the informants: what they know (epistemic cue),

Implicit learning of social information in contextual cueing.

Human attention is often guided by contextual cues that signal where or how to focus in complex environments. Research on object contextual cueing has largely emphasized spatial regularities, but it remains unclear whether socially meaningful information can also provide such guidance. Across three experiments using face stimuli, we examined whether social cues can serve as contextual cues independently of spatial arrangements. In all experiments, participants searched for a target face among distractor faces, with spatial configurations fully randomized on every trial, and contextual informat

Testing the reinforcement learning hypothesis of social conformity.

Our preferences are influenced by the opinions of others. The past human neuroimaging studies on social conformity have identified a network of brain regions related to social conformity that includes the posterior medial frontal cortex (pMFC), anterior insula, and striatum. Since these brain regions are also known to play important roles in reinforcement learning (i.e., processing prediction error), it was previously hypothesized that social conformity and reinforcement learning have a common neural mechanism. However, although this view is currently widely accepted, these two processes have

Schizotypal personality traits and the social learning of fear.

Schizotypy can be defined as a combination of traits qualitatively similar to those found in schizophrenia, but milder in their expression, that can be found in clinical and non-clinical populations. In this research, we explore, to our knowledge, for the first time, whether schizotypal personality traits may affect the acquisition of conditioned fear by social means only. Apart from being an essential capacity to ensure learning in safe environments, social fear learning shares important characteristics with direct fear acquisition, which also makes it a great candidate for developing success

Social isolation and achievement of students with learning disabilities.

Students with learning disabilities (LDs) experience heightened levels of social isolation, but researchers have not fully explored its various dimensions at school or determined which aspects contribute to educational gaps associated with LDs. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we find that middle and high school students with LDs are more likely to experience most types of isolation. Student with LDs have fewer friends, their friends are less educationally ambitious, they feel more detached and disliked at school, and they are more likely to avoid friendship

Social learning of vocal structure in a nonhuman primate?

BACKGROUND: Non-human primate communication is thought to be fundamentally different from human speech, mainly due to vast differences in vocal control. The lack of these abilities in non-human primates is especially striking if compared to some marine mammals and bird species, which has generated somewhat of an evolutionary conundrum. What are the biological roots and underlying evolutionary pressures of the human ability to voluntarily control sound production and learn the vocal utterances of others? One hypothesis is that this capacity has evolved gradually in humans from an ancestral stag

Social inference and social anxiety: evidence of a fear-congruent self-referential learning bias.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Fears of negative evaluation characterise social anxiety, and preferential processing of fear-relevant information is implicated in maintaining symptoms. Little is known, however, about the relationship between social anxiety and the process of inferring negative evaluation. The ability to use social information to learn what others think about one, referred to here as self-referential learning, is fundamental for effective social interaction. The aim of this research was to examine whether social anxiety is associated with self-referential learning. METHODS: 102 Fe

The social misperception syndrome in children with learning disabilities: social causes versus neurological variables.

Family shortcomings or other intrinsic psychological deficits are frequently viewed as contributing factors to the social misperceptiveness frequently seen in children with learning disabilities. This article attempts to synthesize research defining the social problems of some children with learning disabilities. Particularly emphasized is the role of communication skills deficits. Breakthroughs in neurophysiology negate, to a large extent, traditional emphases on family dysfunction, school failure, or personality distrubances as primary causes of the social problems of some children with LD.

Evolutionary multi-agent reinforcement learning in group social dilemmas.

Reinforcement learning (RL) is a powerful machine learning technique that has been successfully applied to a wide variety of problems. However, it can be unpredictable and produce suboptimal results in complicated learning environments. This is especially true when multiple agents learn simultaneously, which creates a complex system that is often analytically intractable. Our work considers the fundamental framework of Q-learning in public goods games, where RL individuals must work together to achieve a common goal. This setting allows us to study the tragedy of the commons and free-rider eff

Increased threat learning after social isolation in human adolescents.

In animal models, social isolation impacts threat responding and threat learning, especially during development. This study examined the effects of acute social isolation on threat learning in human adolescents using an experimental, within-participant design. Participants aged 16-19 years underwent a session of complete isolation and a separate session of isolation with virtual social interactions, counterbalanced between participants, as well as a baseline session. At baseline and following each isolation session, participants reported their psychological state and completed a threat learnin

Alteration learning in social anxiety disorder: an fMRI study.

The present study attempts to challenge the orbitofrontal cortex by using a learning paradigm which is specifically subserved by this cortical region. We implemented a version of alternation learning specifically designed for fMRI and assessed the cognitive performance and fMRI response in wide range of social anxiety disorder (SAD) severity (n=15). The main regions that were activated by the alternation learning task included portions of frontal and orbitofrontal cortex as well as the calcarine fissure. Correlations between brain activation and performance of the alternation learning task wer

Social learning, sexual and physical abuse, and adult crime.

This research examines the relationship between childhood physical and sexual abuse and the types of crimes committed by male adult offenders. We use the method of discriminant prediction to determine whether independent and dependent variables are related in ways that theories predict. Our analyses of data from the Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities suggest that offenders model specific behaviors to which they have been exposed. Male offenders who were sexually abused as a child are more likely to commit sexual offenses, particularly sexual offenses against childre

Refugee social network growth post-resettlement: Impact of a learning, advocacy, and social support intervention.

Understanding and supporting social network growth among forcibly displaced people is vital as they rebuild their lives. This study examined data from a randomized controlled trial of the Refugee Well-being Project (RWP), a 6-month community-based intervention involving university students and refugees working together to reduce psychological distress and expand social networks. Multilevel growth curve analyses were conducted across four time points over 12 months among 290 recently resettled Afghan, Great Lakes African, Iraqi, and Syrian refugees in the United States. Results showed that inte

Social Emotional Learning Program Boosts Early Social and Behavioral Skills in Low-Income Urban Children.

Social emotional learning (SEL) programs are increasingly being implemented in elementary schools to facilitate development of social competencies, decision-making skills, empathy, and emotion regulation and, in effect, prevent poor outcomes such as school failure, conduct problems, and eventual substance abuse. SEL programs are designed to foster these abilities in children with a wide range of behavioral, social, and learning needs in the classroom, including children who are economically disadvantaged. In a previous study of kindergartners residing in a high-poverty community (N = 327 at ba

How medical students learn about the social: Opportunities and limitations in service learning and volunteering.

Medical education's integration of social determinants of health (SDOH) is essential for fostering equitable and comprehensive patient care. Despite this need, many medical schools struggle to effectively teach SDOH due in part to the hidden curriculum-subtle, institutional norms and values that implicitly shape student learning and, in this case, undermine an appreciation of SDOH. This article examines the potential and limitations of service learning (SL) as an experiential learning modality to address these challenges. Traditional didactic methods often fail to capture the complex, relation

Reduced effects of social feedback on learning in Turner syndrome.

Turner syndrome is a genetic condition caused by a complete or partial loss of one of the X chromosomes. Previous studies indicate that Turner syndrome is associated with challenges in social skills, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. A possible mechanism is a reduced social influence on learning. The current study examined the impact of social and non-social feedback on learning in women with Turner syndrome (n = 35) and a sex- and age-matched control group (n = 37). Participants were instructed to earn points by repeatedly choosing between two stimuli with unequal proba
