The Journal of adolescent health : official publication of the Society for Adolescent Medicine2019eng
PURPOSE: Transgender adolescents are at higher risk for negative mental health outcomes, such as depression, anxiety, and suicidality, compared with cisgender adolescents. Social media may be an effective venue for addressing these health disparities because most adolescents have access to online information and socialization. This study used qualitative inquiry to explore transgender adolescents' uses of social media for social support.
METHODS: Transgender adolescents between the ages of 15 and 18 years with a social media profile were recruited from a pediatric gender clinic in the Midwest

BACKGROUND: While social media fatigue and social anxiety may shape individuals' patterns of social media use, validated instruments assessing these constructs remain limited in Southeast Asian contexts.
METHODS: The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Social Media Fatigue Scale (SMFS) and the Social Anxiety Scale for Social Media Users (SAS-SMU) using confirmatory factor analysis. A total of 1012 Indonesian university students completed both instruments. Measurement invariance across gender and academic discipline was further examined.
RESULTS: Item 13 of the SMFS was

The substantial challenges facing high and low dose psychedelic drug development to achieve regulatory approval have been documented in the scientific literature. These limitations have not deterred drug developers and social media from repeatedly misleading patients, the public and health professionals. Developing "micro doses" of psychedelics overcomes many of the scientific and regulatory challenges of high dose psychedelics. If micro-dosing could be shown to be efficacious and safe for long term use, it could be administered in the typical model for treatment of mental disorders. Such a mo

BACKGROUND: Myopia has become a public health issue worldwide. The fast increase in myopia prevalence in the last years has been accompanied by an increase in information through social and conventional media. This has led to the fight not only against a pandemic but also against the infodemic. The excess of information has made it increasingly difficult for health professionals to identify high-quality articles. Alternative Metrics are useful tools to identify publications that provoke attention to society. This research aims to study the impact that research on myopia has had on social media

IMPORTANCE: Social media use has grown rapidly, with particularly high adoption among adolescents. These patterns carry both risks, such as problematic use, and potential benefits, such as social connection, creating challenges for policymakers developing regulatory approaches.
OBJECTIVE: To synthesize existing evidence and policy approaches related to legislative efforts addressing adolescent social media use and to assess the potential risks, benefits, and evidence gaps associated with commonly proposed or implemented policy strategies.
EVIDENCE REVIEW: Evidence was identified through data

IMPORTANCE: Social media is a dominant source of health information, including vaccine information, but little is known about which message characteristics audiences prefer when deciding what social media content to engage with and about how to measure these preferences.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify the attributes of existing social media vaccination posts that are associated with the preference for and confidence in vaccination-related content.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used a combination of the discrete choice experiment (DCE) and the Swiss tournament approach

Topical corticosteroids (TCS) are the most commonly prescribed treatment for children with atopic dermatitis and are supported by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) atopic dermatitis treatment guidelines with level I strength A evidence; however, fear regarding their use, coined "steroid phobia," is widespread. In this study, we analyzed steroid phobia-related content on popular social media platforms. We found much of this content consists of patients describing negative personal experiences with TCS and subsequently discouraging viewer use. We conclude that social media may contribute

Social media are changing the way we do business and how leaders are perceived, from the shop floor to the CEO suite. But whereas the best businesses are creating comprehensive strategies in thi area, research suggests that few corporate Leaders have a social media presence--say, a Facebook or Linked in of page--and that those do don't use it strategically. Today's leaders must embrace social media for three reasons, First, they provide a low-cost, highly accessible platform on which to build your personal brand, communicating who you are both within and outside your company. Second, they allo

In today's visually driven digital culture, social media platforms constitute a central context for identity development and self-presentation, particularly among young adults. Grounded in Social Comparison Theory and Impression Management Theory, this study proposes a process-oriented model explaining how social appearance anxiety is associated with social media fatigue through sequential psychological mechanisms. Specifically, the study examined the serial mediating roles of appearance-related social media consciousness and social media false self-presentation in the relationship between soc

PURPOSE: Understanding how social media use (SMU) embedded in daily routines influences mental health in older adulthood is crucial. We explored whether integration-based SMU relates to depressive symptoms and whether social support mediates that link, considering online network size.
METHOD: A cross-sectional survey of 371 community-dwelling adults aged ≥55 years measured SMU integration, social support, depressive symptoms, demographics, health, and network size. Mediation analysis with bias-corrected bootstrapping assessed direct and indirect paths.
RESULTS: Greater SMU integration corres

INTRODUCTION: Developmental researchers are becoming increasingly interested in the role of social media in adolescents' experiences with their peers; however, to date, few studies have investigated the association between youngsters' interactions with friends online and the perceived quality of their friendship relationships.
METHODS: Thus, the current study aims to test the associations between three social media features, as perceived by adolescents, (i.e., availability, quantifiability, visualness) and the quality of adolescents' friendships (in terms of perceived validation, intimacy, co

Social media (SM) are the new standard for social interaction and people with OCD use such platforms like everyone else. However, the research on these individuals provides limited, sporadic, and difficult-to-generalize data outside of social-media evidence for one specific context concerning how SM is experienced by people with OCD. Our cross-sectional study involved 660 participants (71.4% females, 28.6% males) with 22% of the sample surpassing the 90° percentile threshold to be identified as high-level OCD-symptomatic individuals. Our work highlighted that roughly all OCD types are affected
