Social Relationships, Gender, and Recovery From Mobility Limitation Among Older Americans.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence suggests social relationships may be important facilitators for recovery from functional impairment, but the extant literature is limited in its measurement of social relationships including an over emphasis on filial social support and a paucity of nationally representative data. METHODS: Using data from Waves 4-9 (1998-2008) of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), this research examines the association between social relationships and recovery from severe mobility limitation (i.e., difficulty walking one block or across the room) among older Americans. Using a more nu

The social and policy predictors of driving mobility among older adults.

This research was designed to identify the impact of state driver's license renewal requirements on the driving mobility (i.e., the reduction or cessation of driving) of older (70 years or older) drivers in the United States. Nationally representative data from four waves (1993-2000) of the Asset and Health Dynamics of the Oldest Old study were linked to state policies on relicensing and used in a longitudinal logistic regression analysis. The author assessed the driving behaviors of a sample of 9,638 men and women. The findings demonstrate that the driving mobility of older people is influenc

Dental attitudes and behavior related to vertical social mobility by marriage.

Following a dental examination of 5-year-old children, the mothers of 367 of them were interviewed. In 262 cases there was sufficient information relating to the social class of both the mother's husband and her father to enable the relationship between social mobility by marriage and the mother's dental attitudes and behavior to be assessed. The results showed that the views of mothers who moved from one social group to another fell between those of the mothers who were static in each of those two groups. Those mothers who were downward mobile had less favorable attitudes than those who had r

Role of Social Mobilization (Network) in Polio Eradication in India.

In 2009, India contributed to over half the global cases of poliomyelitis. Many believed that India would be the last country to be polio free. India proved them wrong and was certified polio free in 2014. In January 2016, India celebrated 5 years of being polio free. One of the major reasons behind the interruption of polio transmission in the Polio endemic states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar was the deployment of Social Mobilization Network (SMNet). A three tiered structure, the 7300 strong SMNet is now the gold standard in public health communication. It mobilizes communities by spearheading

Mobilize to vaccinate: lessons learned from social mobilization for immunization in low and middle-income countries.

Creating and sustaining demand for immunization services is a global priority to ensure that vaccine-eligible populations are fully protected from vaccine-preventable diseases. Social mobilization remains a key health promotion strategy used by low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to promote vaccination demand. In this commentary, we synthesize illustrative evidence on successful social mobilization efforts promoting the uptake of immunization services in select LMICs. The first example focuses on Sierra Leone's routine immunization program during the Universal Child Immunization initiativ

Interplay between mobility, social participation, and symptom burden in advanced lung cancer

PURPOSE: Advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is associated with a high symptom burden that negatively impacts daily functioning and quality of life. A better understanding of the time course and relationships between these constructs can help tailor rehabilitation interventions in the context of disease progression. The objectives were to describe and compare the trajectories in mobility, participation, and symptom burden and to assess associations and explore predictors of mobility change. METHODS: Secondary data analysis of a longitudinal cohort study of 110 participants with NSCLC.

Associations Among Neighborhood Characteristics, Mobility Limitation, and Social Participation in Late Life.

OBJECTIVES: Although emerging research suggests neighborhood characteristics can support and restrict social participation in older adults, further research regarding a wider range of neighborhood characteristics and interactions between individual and neighborhood characteristics is needed. This study explored associations between neighborhood characteristics and frequency of participation in three social activities among older adults and interactions between neighborhood characteristics and mobility limitation as they relate to participation. METHOD: Data from the 2008 wave of the Health an

Social isolation in chronic kidney disease and the role of mobility limitation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with multiple comorbidities, hospitalizations and mortality. In older adults, social isolation and poor mobility contribute to these outcomes. We tested the hypothesis that a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) <45 mL/min/1.73 m2 (CKD Stages 3b-5) is associated with social isolation and that mobility limitation is a key driver of social isolation in patients with CKD. METHODS: Data from 9119 participants, ages 57-107 years, from the 2016 wave of the Health and Retirement Study's Venous Blood Study were used for this cross-sectional analysis.

Mortality Following Trajectories of Mobility Limitations: The Modifying Impact of Social Factors.

Objective: How are trajectories of mobility limitations (MLs) among older adults associated with mortality? Do social factors modify these associations? Method: Group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify four trajectories of MLs over a period of 4.5 years among 3,055 older Danes. Mortality analyses were conducted using additive hazard regression models. Results: Compared to older adults without MLs, older adults with high level of MLs who experienced further increase in MLs were associated with the most additional deaths followed by older adults with no MLs at baseline who later expe

Occupational prestige, social mobility and the association with lung cancer in men.

BACKGROUND: The nature of the association between occupational social prestige, social mobility, and risk of lung cancer remains uncertain. Using data from the international pooled SYNERGY case-control study, we studied the association between lung cancer and the level of time-weighted average occupational social prestige as well as its lifetime trajectory. METHODS: We included 11,433 male cases and 14,147 male control subjects. Each job was translated into an occupational social prestige score by applying Treiman's Standard International Occupational Prestige Scale (SIOPS). SIOPS scores were

Multimodal user interfaces to improve social integration of elderly and mobility impaired.

Technologies for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Communication have evolved tremendously over the past decades. However, citizens such as mobility impaired or elderly or others, still face many difficulties interacting with communication services, either due to HCI issues or intrinsic design problems with the services. In this paper we start by presenting the results of two user studies, the first one conducted with a group of mobility impaired users, comprising paraplegic and quadriplegic individuals; and the second one with elderly. The study participants carried out a set of tasks with

Mobility, assistive technology use, and social integration among adults with spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: Many individuals with spina bifida have impairments that limit mobility and functional independence. Sedentary lifestyles and social isolation are very prevalent. This study evaluated the association between the use of mobility devices and degree of socialization. DESIGN: A retrospective chart review was performed on 208 adults with spina bifida attending a university-based clinic. Data collected included the Craig Handicap Assessment Reporting Technique-Short Form, Beck Depression Inventory, and data on wheelchair and other assistive technology use. We hypothesized that community

The spread of Jenner's vaccine: social mobilization in the early nineteenth century.

Several books have been devoted in the past to the history of smallpox, for instance the classic "Smallpox" by C. W. Dixon, published in 1962 by J. and A. Churchill Ltd., London, which endeavors to present both the clinical and public health aspects of the disease. More recently, 2 very important books have been written on the history of smallpox, one in the United States, by Donald R. Hopkins, assistant surgeon general of the United States and deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, entitled "Princes and Peasants, Smallpox in History," published in 1983, the other one in

Impact of social and mobility restrictions in Parkinson's disease during COVID-19 lockdown.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of strict COVID-19 mobility restrictions on motor/non-motor features in Parkinson's disease (PD) have not been systematically studied but worse mobility and quality of life have been reported. To elucidate this question, 12 mild to moderate PD patients were assessed in March 2020 before and after two months of isolation as part of a clinical study that had to be interrupted due to the pandemic and the implementation of COVID19 mobility restrictions. METHODS: Twelve patients were systematically evaluated before and after the lockdown period as part of a larger coho

Forced residential mobility and social support: impacts on psychiatric disorders among Somali migrants.

BACKGROUND: Somali migrants fleeing the civil war in their country face punishing journeys, the loss of homes, possessions, and bereavement. On arrival in the host country they encounter poverty, hostility, and residential instability which may also undermine their mental health. METHODS: An in-depth and semi-structured interview was used to gather detailed accommodation histories for a five year period from 142 Somali migrants recruited in community venues and primary care. Post-codes were verified and geo-mapped to calculate characteristics of residential location including deprivation indi

Social mobility belief enhances fertility intention among childless individuals by bolstering fertility efficacy.

Low fertility intentions among childless individuals constitute a critical factor underlying the low-fertility crisis. Drawing on an integrated theoretical framework, this study employs four studies to examine the mechanisms through which beliefs about social mobility influence fertility intentions. Results indicate that social mobility beliefs positively predict fertility intentions, though age-stratified analyses reveal that this direct association is driven by post-reproductive adults, consistent with the view that prospective fertility intentions among younger adults require a mediating me

Disparities in mental health, social support and coping among individuals with mobility impairment.

BACKGROUND: CDC estimated that 19.4 million (7.8%) US adults are living with mobility impairment, who are unable to walk a quarter mile. Individuals with physical disability reported greater depression and, in some cases, insufficient social support. OBJECTIVES: This study explores the extent of disparities in psychological health, social support, and coping mechanisms among those with mobility impairment as compared to those without such impairment, and the longitudinal effect of onset of mobility impairment on subsequent psychosocial health and coping. METHODS: Individuals with mobility im
