Overall, 263 patients from seven countries participated. The most frequent wound class was leg ulcer (49.2%). Results revealed generally high levels of social support (mean global score: 5.5) as measured with the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. However, individuals differed considerably (ran

Elderly participants of social and rehabilitative day centres.

As it develops, an ageing society has increased need of services that can promote the health and well-being of the elderly. Community-based day programmes are one kind of service intended to support elderly people with restricted function in their daily lives. There are several different forms of day programmes for the elderly in Sweden, but guidelines are vague about their aim and implementation and little is known about the persons using them. The aim of this study was to identify characteristics of the elderly people living in their own home who participated in social day centres in compari

Barriers to social participation among patients with hemophilia: a qualitative study using social-ecological systems theory.

BACKGROUND: Social participation greatly determines health-related quality of life, while people with hemophilia face severe social engagement restrictions. Current studies only explore such barriers from single dimensions including joint function, employment and mental distress, lacking a comprehensive social-ecological perspective. Based on social-ecological systems theory, this study systematically analyzes multi-level barriers to social participation among Chinese hemophilia patients to support integrated nursing intervention development. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological qualitativ

Neighborhood physical disorder and social participation among older Americans: mediations of social cohesion and depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: This research examined the associations between neighborhood physical disorder and social participation among community-dwelling older adults, and whether low social cohesion, as a social-relational pathway, and depressive symptoms, as a psychological pathway, partially explain the associations. METHODS: Using national data from Rounds 12-14 of National Aging and Trends Study, this research involved 3,350 Americans aged 65 or older. Social participation was measured by self-reported participation in five informal and formal social activities. Linear regressions examined associatio

The effect of situational structure on the social performance of socially anxious and non-anxious participants.

Twenty-six socially anxious and 24 low-anxious female undergraduate students were observed in brief unstructured and structured hetero-social interactions with a confederate. The unstructured interaction was a naturalistic interaction in which participants were observed surreptitiously. The structured interaction was a role-play in which participants were instructed to try and get to know as much as possible about their partner. Videotapes of the interactions were subsequently rated on subjective and objective measures of social skill. The results showed that high socially anxious females perf

Social Participation and Psychological Well-Being Among Older Adults With Dementia.

The positive physical, mental, and cognitive health effects of social participation in late life have been well established. However, the facilitators and barriers of social participation among older adults with dementia and the effects of social participation on their psychological well-being have been understudied. Using the cross-sectional 2023 National Health and Aging Trends Studies (N = 7,547; 13.2% of them classified as having possible or probable dementia), we examined the correlates of social participation among older adults with dementia, compared to those among their peers without d

The Impact of Occupational Participation in Hobby Activities on Social Frailty.

Social frailty (SF) involves reduced social participation, roles, and support, and it is associated with adverse health outcomes. However, the relationship between SF and occupational participation, particularly hobbies, remains underexplored. We examined the association between SF and occupational participation, particularly hobbies, among older adults. A cross-sectional survey of 1,000 older adults in Japan (mean age: 74.08 ± 5.48 years) was conducted online. Participants were classified as robust, pre-SF (PSF), or SF using Makizako's five-item criteria. Occupational participation was assess

The brain network underlying social participation: a multimodal, data-driven investigation.

Identifying brain phenotypes influencing social participation may help understand social deficits in psychiatric disorders. Previous research shows methodological inconsistencies, lacking consensus on which brain regions are crucial. Data-driven variable selection may overcome this, facilitating unbiased replication and discovery of social brain regions. We compare data-driven selection to literature-identification of brain regions in explaining social participation variation. In 37,576 UK Biobank participants (mean age 65 ± 8, 53% female) with structural and functional neuroimaging data, soci

High-Impact Participation? Social Activities, Activity Frequency, and Older Adult Cognition.

ObjectivesThere is growing recognition that social participation may help attenuate cognitive decline in older ages. Unfortunately, previous research often relies on participation index measures, which may obfuscate associations among cognition, specific activities, and the frequency of partaking in those activities.MethodsData are from six waves of the Health and Retirement Study (N = 20,696). Regression models test how associations between social participation and cognition vary by social activity and by multiple specifications of activity frequency.ResultsUsing a participation index, any ne

20-Year trends in the social participation of the oldest old.

AIMS: To investigate 20-year trends in social participation among the oldest old (77+ years) in Sweden and assess the extent to which changes in educational attainment and functional abilities explain these trends. METHODS: Seven waves of the Swedish Panel Study of Living Conditions of the Oldest Old (SWEOLD) spanning 2002-2021 were used with a repeated cross-sectional design. To analyse the association between time and social participation we employed the Karlson-Holm-Breen method of decomposition. The study focused on informal social participation (contact with friends and family), leisure
