Older adults and social support in rural Canada: A rapid mixed methods systematic review to inform social prescribing.

OBJECTIVES: Social support may assist people's health as they age but less is known about how this relationship may differ for older adults living in rural communities. Knowledge of this information can inform the implementation of social prescribing, a care model aiming to address people's unmet non-medical social needs. METHODS: This was a systematic rapid mixed-methods review following guidelines. We searched 10 electronic sources (all languages from 2000 and later) for peer-reviewed studies; our last search was on May 5, 2025. We followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) mixed-methods ap

Building and evaluating a social prescribing program for carer-employees: an intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Within a 12-month time window, and in partnership with the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing (CISP), an extension of the Canadian Red Cross (CRC), we will develop and test a social prescribing (SP) program intervention in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada for Carer-Employees (CEs) - those who balance unpaid care of an adult dependent with paid employment. Given the emergence of SP programs geared towards unpaid carers more broadly, the development of an SP program specific to CEs will provide coordinated access to social and community supports that are unique to the needs of CEs in

Cultural Prescribing: Concepts, Evidence, Implementation, and the Contribution of Socially Engaged Art.

Cultural prescribing is an emerging approach that connects people with arts, cultural activities, heritage, and culturally meaningful places to support health and well-being. It is usually situated within social prescribing and overlaps with Arts on Prescription, museum-based programmes, creative health, community arts, and participatory arts. However, inconsistent terminology and intervention models make its scope difficult to define. This critical narrative review clarifies the concept of cultural prescribing, summarizes its proposed mechanisms and current evidence, examines implementation a

The clinical and social dimensions of prescribing palliative home oxygen for refractory dyspnea.

BACKGROUND: Chronic breathlessness is a significant problem in palliative care and oxygen is often prescribed in an attempt to ameliorate it. Often, this prescription falls outside the current funding guidelines for long-term home oxygen use. The aim of this qualitative study was to understand the factors that most influence Australian specialist palliative care nurses' initiation of home oxygen for their patients. METHODS: A series of focus groups were held across three states in Australia in 2011 involving specialist palliative care nurses. The invitation to the nurses was sent by e-mail th

Social prescribing for people recovering from treatment for cancer: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social prescribing (SP) has emerged as a non-medical strategy to enhance cancer survivors' well-being by addressing psychosocial challenges through diverse interventions. Despite growing evidence of benefits, a comprehensive synthesis of intervention effectiveness and implementation barriers remains limited. This scoping review updates current evidence on SP interventions, outcomes, and challenges among cancer survivors. PURPOSE: To identify and map SP interventions for post-treatment cancer survivors, assess their impact on well-being and quality of life, and summarise barriers a

Equity-Driven and Community Empowerment-Focused Social Prescribing: Lessons From the Front Lines.

Social prescribing offers an individual- and community-centred approach to addressing social isolation and a broader range of social risks to health and health inequities. The emerging Canadian model of social prescribing puts equity and community at its centre. To support the critical development of such programs, we offer lessons from three key areas of implementation: shifting the culture of health teams, instilling a core focus on equity and building practical support for health teams ready to engage in this work. The wider development of equity- and community-focused social prescribing pr

Identifying social prescribing core outcomes using a Delphi approach: findings and future directions.

UNLABELLED: Although social prescribing is a growing global health and social movement, no Delphi studies have determined which outcomes are critical to assess. Our aim was to identify a core outcome set based on feedback from diverse user groups of people who could be affected by (e.g. adults ≥ 60 years) or who can affect (e.g. providers, researchers) social prescribing. METHODS: Following standard guidelines for Delphi studies, we developed a two-round online survey with a focus on Canadian perspectives. We asked participants to rate 21 outcomes as "critical" (7-9 on a 9-point scale), "impo

Link workers' perspectives on factors enabling and preventing client engagement with social prescribing.

For a social prescribing intervention to achieve its aims, clients must first be effectively engaged. A 'link worker' facilitating linkage between clients and community resources has been identified as a vital component of social prescribing. However, the mechanisms underpinning successful linkage remain underspecified. This qualitative study is the first to explore link workers' own definitions of their role in social prescribing and the skills and qualities identified by link workers themselves as necessary for effective client linkage. This study also explores 'threats' to successful linked

Evaluating the social return on investment of nature-based social prescribing to alleviate loneliness: a randomized controlled trial in Barcelona.

INTRODUCTION: Loneliness is associated with adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular diseases, depression, and premature mortality, and is unequally distributed according to social determinants. Prescribing individuals to community-based interventions in nature, often described as nature-based social prescribing (NBSP), has emerged as a promising intervention to address loneliness. This study aims to quantify the social return of investment (SROI) of the "Friends in Nature" (FiN) intervention designed to alleviate loneliness. METHODS: Following key guidelines, we performed a SROI stu

Social prescribing within five European countries: a protocol of a cross-country qualitative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Social prescribing is an approach to addressing non-medical issues affecting people's health and well-being (eg, loneliness, housing or financial problems). It has gained international traction over recent years as complementary to medical care. A larger research project, comparing social prescribing across European countries, is considering how to tailor provision for the following groups: (a) LGBTIQ+persons, (b) refugees and first-generation immigrants and (c) older adults living alone. As part of this research, a qualitative study will address the question: What are the enabli

Creative social prescribing groups during lockdown: a photo-elicitation evaluation of group users' experiences.

Previous research has examined the experiences of voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) group providers, but the voices of group users, especially those recovering from, or living with SMI, are sparse. This study addresses that gap, using the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown as a natural experiment to gain insights into the experiences of individuals participating in VCSE-run creative and social groups, and comparing this with the experiences of providers. We conducted photo-elicitation focus groups to explore group members' perspectives. Lockdown highlighted to group members what they

Developing a program theory for implementing a Danish social prescribing model: an ethnographic study.

INTRODUCTION: Social prescribing (SP) is increasingly promoted internationally as a cross-sector strategy to address complex health and social needs by linking primary care patients with community-based, non-clinical support. Despite increasing policy uptake and expanding evaluations of outcomes, evidence on how SP models are implemented and become embedded in routine practice across diverse welfare and organizational contexts remains limited and fragmented. Existing studies tend to catalogue implementation activities and contextual barriers without sufficiently explaining how implementation s

Effectiveness and strategies of social prescribing in Korea using a machine learning topic modeling.

BACKGROUND: Social prescribing, a non-medical approach linking individuals to community-based services to improve health and well-being, has expanded globally, including Korea. Despite their increasing adoption, there is limited systematic evidence evaluating the effectiveness, implementation strategies, and policy implications of social prescriptions in the Korean context. METHODS: This study conducted a scoping review of the literature related to social prescriptions in Korea. English- and Korean-language articles were retrieved from five databases (Google Scholar, Web of Science, PubMed, Sc

Greater self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism in severe alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Perfectionistic individuals present exaggerated performance standards, generating a constant search for flawlessness and a high tendency to self-criticize. Dominant models distinguish three dimensions of perfectionism: namely, self-oriented, socially prescribed and other-oriented. Perfectionism constitutes a vulnerability factor for psychopathological disorders, but its role in severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD) remains unexplored. METHODS: Sixty-five recently detoxified patients with SAUD and 65 matched controls completed a perfectionism questionnaire (the Hewitt Multidimensional

Toward Community Health 2067: Social Prescribing, Learning Systems and the Making of an Enabling State.

Responding to commentaries on "Social Prescribing as Strategic Infrastructure," this rejoinder builds on reflections about public provision, community capacity, equity, relational labour and the limits of clinically led referral models. It argues that these contributions sharpen and extend the central proposition: social prescribing can connect local experience to institutional learning, financing and system change. The paper reframes social prescribing across intervention, infrastructure and transformation, and situates it within a learning health policy system and an enabling state that buil

Promoting Exercise as a Therapeutic Intervention in Multiple Sclerosis: Barriers, Efficacy, and Social Prescribing Strategies.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurologic disease associated with significant physical, cognitive and social burden. Substantial evidence supports the safety and benefits of aerobic exercise for people with MS (pwMS), including improvements in fatigue, mobility, cognition, mood and quality of life. While exercise is recommended across all disability levels in clinical guidelines, real-world adherence remains low. This narrative review summarizes the benefits of aerobic exercise in MS and examines the symptom-related, psychosocial, socioeconomic, and healthcare system barriers that limits

Are participants with disability referred for social prescribing? Findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

BACKGROUND: Social prescribing connects NHS patients to activities, groups, and services in their community to address wider health determinants. Those living with disability may have needs for support from social prescribing, yet there is little evidence exploring this. METHODS: We examined the association between referral to social prescribing and disability, using logistic regression in 5578 individuals aged ≥50 from wave 10 of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (year 2021-23). RESULTS: Referral to social prescribing is significantly associated with mobility disability (OR 1.68 [95%
