BACKGROUND: Racial/ethnic dementia disparities among older adults with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are likely driven by environmental and social injustices. We quantified the impact of fine particulate air pollution exposure (PM2.5; environmental injustice) by racial/ethnic segregation (social injustice) on dementia diagnosis in ESKD.
METHODS: We leveraged the US national registry to identify 884 950 older adults (age ≥55 years) who initiated dialysis (2003-2019). Adjusted Cox regression models with shared state-level frailty quantified the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of dementia by PM2.5

BACKGROUND: Residential segregation limits the access to resources, primarily because of disinvestment. This study evaluated the association between residential segregation and colorectal cancer screening in the United States and whether findings differed by race and ethnicity.
METHODS: Restricted National Health Interview Survey data (2010-2018) were used to ascertain colorectal cancer screening adherence per US Preventive Services Task Force recommendations. Residential segregation was operationalized using the Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE), based on income, race, and ethnici

Background Existing studies on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) often focus on individual-level behavioral risk factors, but research examining social determinants is limited. This study applies a novel machine learning approach to identify the key predictors of county-level care costs and prevalence of CVDs (including atrial fibrillation, acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and ischemic heart disease). Methods and Results We applied the extreme gradient boosting machine learning approach to a total of 3137 counties. Data are from the Interactive Atlas of Heart Disease and Str

INTRODUCTION: Social environmental factors are associated with risky health behaviors. However, limited research examines these relationships among older adults and across multiple levels of the social environment.
METHODS: This study analyzed data from a 2021 survey of older adults (aged ≥50 years, n=2,774) in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. Using a socioecologic framework, the social environment was measured at the levels of the individual (loneliness, resilience, perceived discrimination), interpersonal (emotional social support), neighborhood (attraction to neighborhood, acts of neigh

Dr. Grady Orange was a baseball player in the Negro National League (NNL) from 1925 to 1930, and then a practicing physician until his sudden death. Born in 1900, in Terrell, Texas, Grady was raised in the Jim Crow South. There were economic and societal barriers for African Americans, including access to well-paying jobs and opportunities for career advancement. Hospitals were segregated, as Black doctors faced barriers to medical education and were often not permitted to practice in white institutions. After Orange's baseball career, using NNL salaries to cover costs, he turned his focus to

Environmental health researchers, sociologists, policy-makers, and activists concerned about environmental justice argue that communities of color who are segregated in neighborhoods with high levels of poverty and material deprivation are also disproportionately exposed to physical environments that adversely affect their health and well-being. Examining these issues through the lens of racial residential segregation can offer new insights into the junctures of the political economy of social inequality with discrimination, environmental degradation, and health. More importantly, this line of

Based on data from the 1980s, Sassen's influential book 'The Global City' interrogated how changes in the occupational structure affect socio-economic residential segregation in global cities. Here, using data for New York City, London and Tokyo, we reframe and answer this question for recent decades. Our analysis shows an increase in the share of high-income occupations, accompanied by a fall in low-income occupations in all three cities, providing strong evidence for a consistent trend of professionalization of the workforce. Segregation was highest in New York and lowest in Tokyo. In New Yo

Social communication often involves competing talkers and, thus, gives rise to the multisensory cocktail party problem (MCPP). To solve the MCPP, perceivers must bind, integrate, and segregate each talker's auditory (A) and visual (V) speech streams. Audiovisual (AV) temporal synchrony is a known and powerful multisensory segregation cue and facial and vocal identity cues are known to facilitate segregation. Using eye tracking, we investigated whether perceptual segregation of multiple talking faces depends on the configural talking-face template (Experiment 1) and whether facial, vocal, and l

BACKGROUND: We hypothesize that the location of highly segregated Hispanic and in particular Puerto Rican neighborhoods can explain how Colombian-sourced heroin, which is associated with a large-scale decade long decline in heroin price and increase in purity, was able to enter and proliferate in the US.
METHODS: Our multidisciplinary analysis quantitatively operationalizes participant-observation ethnographic hypotheses informed by social science theory addressing complex political economic, historical, cultural and social processes. First, we ethnographically document the intersection of st

Comparisons of communities across cities are rare in social epidemiology. Our prior work exploring racial/ethnic segregation and the prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) in communities from two large urban cities showed a strong relationship in Chicago and a very weak relationship in Toronto. This study extends that work by examining the association between racial/ethnic minority segregation and LBW in total of 307 communities in five North American cities: Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Toronto. We used Pearson correlation coefficients and OLS regression models to examine poten

BACKGROUND: School racial segregation, a key manifestation of structural racism, has been hypothesized to cause poorer health among Black individuals, contributing to racial health inequities across the life course. School segregation has been increasing in the past 30 years in the US. Few studies have examined the association between school racial segregation and children's health.
METHODS: We linked school district-level segregation measures to individual-level panel data from the 1997-2001 waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Youth 1997. We included Black and White in-school childre

BACKGROUND: Segregation is the degree to which two or more groups live separately. While US research has linked segregation to increased stillbirth risk, studies from Latin America have yet to explore this. This study investigated the association between the racial and income segregation index (SI) and stillbirth prevalence in Brazil.
METHODS: We used nationwide birth data from Brazil in 2018 (live births from Live Birth Information System, SINASC, and stillbirths from Mortality Information System, SIM). Income and racial SI were calculated using the 2010 national census and analyzed as quint

Urban segregation challenges the sustainable and inclusive development of cities, yet little is known about how to address it effectively. This study examines how restaurants in Chengdu, China, a city renowned for its vibrant food culture, shape social interactions in daily life, aiming to uncover ways to promote greater social mixing. Drawing on 1.52 million cell phone records and information on 5,347 restaurants from Dianping.com, social isolation indices were measured across residential contexts and dining-out activities. The results show that the social isolation index during dining-out ac

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood-level racial residential segregation has been linked to several cardiovascular disease risk factors and outcomes in Black adults, but its impact on subclinical atherosclerosis remains unknown. In addition, although the impact of segregation on health may vary over the life course, most studies have examined segregation exposure at a single point in time. This article takes a life course approach by examining associations of exposure to neighborhood-level racial residential segregation in young adulthood and patterns of exposure from young adulthood to midlife with coro

This study explored the recreation and leisure patterns of children with moderate to severe developmental disabilities, 28 parents of children labeled "trainable mentally handicapped" were questioned about the type of sport, exercise, and social activities their children participated in as well as about the opportunities for social inclusion with nondisabled peers that these activities afforded their children. Analyses indicated that most of the children participated in segregated recreation and leisure activities. However, after adjusting for age, an analysis of covariance showed that childre

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether residential segregation impacts on clinical treatment and outcomes for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a nonobligate precursor to invasive breast cancer (IBC).
METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study included adult non-Hispanic White and Black women diagnosed with unilateral DCIS between January 1990 and December 2015, followed through December 2016, and identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results dataset. County-level racialized economic segregation was measured using the Index of Concentration at the Extremes. Mul

OBJECTIVES: Residential segregation profoundly affects mental and physical health. However, impacts of residential segregation and other neighborhood characteristics on health among older Asian Americans are not fully understood. This study aimed to close this gap by examining effects of residential segregation, perceived neighborhood cohesion, and neighborhood disorder on all-cause mortality among older Chinese immigrants, as well as testing whether the association between residential segregation and mortality would be mediated by perceived neighborhood cohesion and neighborhood disorder.

BACKGROUND: The residential segregation of black populations, often in areas of high-economic disadvantage and low social status, may play a crucial role in the observed racial inequities in sexually transmitted disease rates.
METHODS: An ecological analysis of 2005 to 2009 average gonorrhea rates was performed across 277 US metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). The black isolation index and Gini index of income inequality were used as proxy measures for racial and economic residential segregation respectively, derived from 2005 to 2009 US Census estimates. We used logistic regression modeli

BACKGROUND: Residential segregation, both economic, racial and ethnic, is a social determinant of health that contributes to disparities in breast cancer outcomes. The objective of this study was to examine the association of economic and racial and ethnic residential segregation, as measured by the Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE), with breast cancer stage at presentation.
METHODS: In this retrospective two-institution study, we included patients with stage I-IV breast cancer from 2005 to 2017. Using five-year estimates from the American Community Survey (2009-2013), five ICE var

Social science and public health literature has framed residential segregation as a potent structural determinant of the higher HIV burden among black heterosexuals, but empirical evidence has been limited. The purpose of this study is to test, for the first time, the association between racial segregation and newly diagnosed heterosexually acquired HIV cases among black adults and adolescents in 95 large US metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) in 2008-2015. We operationalized racial segregation (the main exposure) using Massey and Denton's isolation index for black residents; the outcome was
