Social "status" and biological "status": a comparison of grave goods and skeletal indicators from Pontecagnano.

Comparison of funerary treatment and skeletal biology can be very informative about the interplay of social status and meanings and actual life conditions in ancient communities, but such comparison is rarely done, due in part to the disciplinary separation of bioanthropology and social archaeology in many archaeological traditions. In this paper, we analyze relations between skeletal pathologies and grave goods in a sample of 94 individuals from Pontecagnano (Salerno, Italy, seventh-third centuries BC). The results show that the relationship between health, activity, and social status as expr

The General Mechanism of Status: The Impact of Perceptual and Knowledge-Based Social Status on Selective Attention.

Social status, a fundamental dimension of human social life, shapes access to resources and opportunities and influences how individuals perceive and interact with others. Perceivers can infer others' social status from both perceptual cues (e.g., clothing) and knowledge-based cues (e.g., biographical information), yet it remains unclear whether and how these distinct types of status cues influence early-stage attentional selection. To address this question, the present study employed a modified two-rectangle paradigm to examine the effects of social status on space- and object-based attention

Relations of Subjective Social Status and Brooding with Blood Pressure.

BACKGROUND: Brooding, a type of rumination, and subjective social status (SSS) may be two interacting factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Our goal was to examine the relations of brooding and SSS with systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), two measures of CVD. We predicted that [1] brooding and SSS are each related to SBP and DBP and [2] the interaction of brooding and SSS is linked to SBP and DBP. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, college student participants (n = 240; 58.6% female, age: M = 23.95 years, SD = 8.62) completed demographics questionnaires,

The role of physical formidability in human social status allocation.

Why are physically formidable men willingly allocated higher social status by others in cooperative groups? Ancestrally, physically formidable males would have been differentially equipped to generate benefits for groups by providing leadership services of within-group enforcement (e.g., implementing punishment of free riders) and between-group representation (e.g., negotiating with other coalitions). Therefore, we hypothesize that adaptations for social status allocation are designed to interpret men's physical formidability as a cue to these leadership abilities, and to allocate greater stat

Pro-community altruism and social status in a Shuar village.

Reciprocity theory (RT) and costly signaling theory (CST) provide different explanations for the high status of pro-community altruists: RT proposes that altruists are positively and negatively sanctioned by others, whereas CST proposes that altruists are attractive to others. Only RT, however, is beset by first- and higher-order free rider problems, which must be solved in order for RT to explain status allocations. In this paper, several solutions to RT's free rider problems are proposed, and data about status allocations to Ecuadorian Shuar pro-community altruists are analyzed in light of R

[Diagnostic screening of social status in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis].

In the literature there is evidence for that the mood of a patient with pulmonary tuberculosis affects the treatment and course of the disease. The necessity of special training of physicians and the duration of an examination make personality tests applied by psychologists not easily accessible to phthisiologists. The author developed methods for integral assessment of social and psychological characteristics by using questionnaire survey. He drew up a special questionnaire given in the Supplement. The questionnaire was used to study 246 middle-aged patients with pulmonary tuberculosis: 141 m

Handicap and social status of adults with spina bifida cystica.

The present physical handicaps and social status of 202 survivors of spina bifida cystica attending The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street before 1954 are described. Ninety-three of the patients, mostly with uncomplicated meningocele, had escaped serious disability and were living normal lives. But 109 had a serious disability, including three who are mentally retarded. Some of the difficulties of living with spina bifida are described, and a record of work, marriage, and reproduction in the whole group of survivors is shown. Of the 106 with serious locomotor problems and/or incon

Variation in State COVID-19 Disease Reporting Forms on Social Identity, Social Needs, and Vaccination Status.

To assess variation in the way state health departments collect data on social identity, social needs, and vaccination status for people testing positive for COVID-19, we reviewed all state health department Web sites for COVID-19 disease reporting forms. We located forms for 39 states and coded each one for the presence and format of fields on race, ethnicity, disability, language, sexual and gender identity, comorbidities, pregnancy status, and social needs such as housing stability, occupation, and prior COVID-19 vaccination status. We find considerable variation in both type and format of

Marital Status and Problem Gambling among Older Adults: An Examination of Social Context and Social Motivations.

ABSTRACTOlder adults represent the highest proportion of gamblers (Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation [OLG], 2012). Unpartnered older adults may be more socially isolated and lonely (Dykstra & de Jong Gierveld, 2004), thus more likely to be at risk for problem gambling (McQuade & Gill, 2012). We examined whether gambling to socialize or from loneliness and going to the casino with friends/family mediate the relation between marital status and problem gambling. Data from a random sample of older adults at gambling venues across Southwestern Ontario indicated that gambling with family/friend

Readiness for Hospital Discharge, Health Literacy, and Social Living Status.

Patient characteristics and lack of preparedness are associated with poor outcomes after hospital discharge. Our purpose was to explore the association between patient characteristics and patient- and nurse-completed Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS). We conducted a prospective study of 70 Veterans being discharged from medical and surgical units. Differences in RHDS knowledge subscale scores were found among literacy levels, with lower perceived knowledge reported for those with marginal or inadequate literacy (p = .03). Differences in RHDS expected support subscale scores were al

Social anxiety disorder and stuttering: current status and future directions.

UNLABELLED: Anxiety is one of the most widely observed and extensively studied psychological concomitants of stuttering. Research conducted prior to the turn of the century produced evidence of heightened anxiety in people who stutter, yet findings were inconsistent and ambiguous. Failure to detect a clear and systematic relationship between anxiety and stuttering was attributed to methodological flaws, including use of small sample sizes and unidimensional measures of anxiety. More recent research, however, has generated far less equivocal findings when using social anxiety questionnaires and

Nosological status of social phobia: contrasting classical and recent literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to contrast classical and recent literature relating to social anxiety disorder in the context of its past, present and future position in classification systems. RECENT FINDINGS: Social phobia is common; it starts early and is chronic and disabling. It runs in families. Social phobia is frequently comorbid with other anxiety, mood and substance use disorders and it often precedes axis I disorders. Concerning neurobiology of social anxiety disorder research is sparse and the results are inconclusive. The data from research on genetics, early enviro

Living arrangements, social integration, and change in functional health status.

Limited prospective data have examined the association between living arrangements and emotional wellbeing. The authors assessed whether older women living with a spouse were less likely to experience a decline in mental health, vitality, or physical function compared with women living alone or with nonspouse others. The association between living arrangement and 4-year change in functional health status was examined prospectively among 28,324 women aged 60-72 years in the Nurses' Health Study. After adjustment for age, baseline function, comorbid conditions, and health behaviors, women living

Adults with learning disabilities: occupational and social status after college.

Forty-nine adults with learning disabilities who had attended a large public university between 1980 and 1992 were interviewed about their current employment and social status. Most of the respondents had adjusted well to the demands and complexities of adulthood. More than 80% of the participants not still in college at the time of the interview were employed, mostly in white collar jobs. Although most of the participants indicated that their learning disabilities affected them at work or in other facets of their life, they typically did not disclose those disabilities when applying for jobs

Perceived Social Status and Psychological Well-Being Among Dental Students.

OBJECTIVE: Perceived social status (PSS), a subjective measure of social position, has been associated with multiple health outcomes. Elevated levels of stress, depression, and anxiety are all prevalent among dental students, but the role of PSS among this population remains unknown. This study investigates relationships between PSS and mental health among dental students. METHODS: In fall 2023, an online survey was distributed to all actively enrolled pre-doctoral dental students at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics (UICOD) (N = 326). Questions included demograph

Early retirees under Social Security: health status and economic resources.

Some proposals to change the Social Security program to ensure long-run solvency would reduce or eliminate benefits for early retirees. This article documents the health and financial resources of Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) beneficiaries aged 62-64. It identifies a substantial minority of early retirees who might be economically vulnerable if either the early eligibility age or normal retirement age was raised. Attention is directed at the extent to which poor health limits work in this age group and the extent to which curtailment of early OASI benefits might lead to increases in

Contextualizing nativity status, Latino social ties, and ethnic enclaves: an examination of the 'immigrant social ties hypothesis'.

OBJECTIVES: Researchers have posited that one potential explanation for the better-than-expected health outcomes observed among some Latino immigrants, vis-à-vis their US-born counterparts, may be the strength of social ties and social support among immigrants. METHODS: We examined the association between nativity status and social ties using data from the Chicago Community Adult Health Study's Latino subsample, which includes Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and other Latinos. First, we used ordinary least squares (OLS) regression methods to model the effect of nativity status on five outcomes: info

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM SOCIAL ISOLATION ON MEMORY AND DEPRESSIVE-LIKE BEHAVIOR IN RATS OF DIFFERENT SOCIAL STATUS.

Prolonged social isolation constitutes a potent chronic stressor capable of inducing behavioral and neurochemical alterations associated with anxiety, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. In rodent models, dominant and submissive individuals exhibit distinct behavioral and neuroendocrine responses under conditions of social stress. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of 30 days of social isolation on depressive-like and anxiety-like behaviors, as well as cognitive performance, in rats with differing social status. Experiments were conducted on 20 groups of white laboratory rats (

Interactive representations of power and status signals in learning social hierarchies.

Social hierarchies, which organize our social relationships, have heterogeneous effects on choice behavior. Two central dimensions of social hierarchies, status, which is earned through recognition of competence, and power, which is the capacity to control the outcomes of others, may contribute to different behavioral profiles. Yet, the neurocomputational processes by which status- and power-related signals are learned based on social feedback, and influence subsequent decision-making, remain unclear. Here, we combine functional neuroimaging with computational modeling to examine how individua
