Social support and victims of crime: matching event, support, and outcome.

Investigated the buffering properties of six types of social support (three perceived, three received) with regard to four psychological consequences (depression, anxiety, fear of crime, hostility) of criminal victimization (violent crime, property crime). These relationships were examined using longitudinal data collected from a sample composed of representative subsamples of victims and nonvictims. Effects of the perceived support measures (perceived appraisal support, perceived tangible support, self-esteem) were more pervasive than those of the received support measures (received informati

Social network tie functions of social support and social influence and adult smoking abstinence.

Adults' social network ties serve multiple functions and play prominently in quitting smoking. We examined three types of adults' egocentric social networks, including family, friends, and friends online to investigate how two network characteristics with major relevance to health behavior, network size and tie closeness, related to the emotional and confidant support and to pro- and anti-smoking social influence these ties may transmit. We also examine whether the social support and social influence constructs related to smoking abstinence. We utilized baseline and 7-day abstinence survey dat

Deaf Identity, Social Relationships, and Social Support: Toward a Microsociological Perspective.

This study is the first to analyze data from a national survey to investigate the significance for deaf identity of the different forms of social and technological support that deaf people rely upon. Data were derived from a survey among 839 deaf people and were analyzed with regard to social identification as deaf, hearing, bicultural, and marginal. Findings showed connections between technology and identity, including the use of a range of technology to support being culturally deaf. Findings also showed that the deaf and hearing groups had strong homophilous social networks, while the bicul

Social support, social dysfunction and stressful life events in neurotic patients.

The relationship between social support, stressful life events and psychosocial dysfunction was studied in 197 neurotic patients comprising 65 patients of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, 81 of Dysthymia and 51 of Dissoiative (conversion) Disorders. It was seen that Dysthymics perceived themselves to have significantly less social support in comparison to Generalized Anxiety or Dissociative Disorders patients. Significant correlations between social support and life events and social support and dysfunction were also obtained and it was observed that lack of social support is negatively correlate

[Specialist community social services as a form of community social support].

Art. 9 of the Polish Mental Health Act provides two forms of community-based social support--specialist social help services and community self-help houses for persons who, due a to serious mental illness or severe mental retardation, face considerable difficulties in their daily life, especially with respect to interpersonal relations, employment and welfare matters. The first form could only be implemented after coming into force of the suitable regulation of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy of December 18, 1996 (Dz. U. z 1997 r., nr. 2, poz. 12). Hence, it may be understood that inf

Dysfunctional attitudes, social support, and adolescent depression.

Adolescent depressive symptoms represent a significant public health concern, with negative life events and dysfunctional attitudes playing pivotal roles in their development. A cross-sectional study by Yu et al assessed the interplay between dysfunctional attitudes, social support, and depressive symptoms in 795 Chinese adolescents (49.9% male, mean age 15.2 ± 1.8 years, age range 11-18 years) from five middle schools in Shandong Province. Using the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale, Adolescent Life Events Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and Social Support Rating Scale, the study identified tha

Maternal depressive symptoms, employment, and social support.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize the relationship between maternal depressive symptoms and employment and whether it is mediated by social support. METHODS: We used data from a nationally representative sample of 700 US women who gave birth in 2005 and completed 2 surveys in the Listening to Mothers series, the first in early 2006, an average of 7.3 months postpartum, and the second an average of 13.4 months postpartum. A dichotomous measure of depressive symptoms was calculated from the 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire, and women reported their employment status an

Social support, spiritual program, and addiction recovery.

This study compared personal and emotional modifications of inmates who were recovering addicts and who participated in one of two year-long therapeutic intervention programs, one including social support and experiential spiritual program components (Narcotics Anonymous, NA, meetings and the 12-step course), the other including primarily social support (NA meetings only, without the 12-step program). The hypothesis was that supplementing social support programs with a concrete spiritual program would result in more positive personal and emotional changes. The results seem to support the hypot

Is social support sometimes a mixed blessing?

BACKGROUND: Child behavioural problems in epilepsy originate from a poorly understood interplay between intrinsic, family and social factors. METHODS: We re-analysed data from a randomized controlled trial of antiepileptic treatment in rural India, using regression analysis to find risk factors for behavioural problems. RESULTS: Parental satisfaction with social support was positively and independently correlated with child behavioural problems (P=0.03). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest parents' interactions within their informal social support network, contrary to expectation, may increase

PURPOSE: This study identified predictors of caregiver's burden, satisfaction, depression, and social support. Little has been done to identify predictors of social support for caregivers at risk for negative outcomes. DESIGN: Correlational descriptive study. METHODS: A subset of interview data from a larger intervention study was utilized. Independent variables were caregiver/care-recipient characteristics and social support. Dependent variables included caregiver burden, satisfaction, depression, anxiety, and hostility. RESULTS: Eighty-one caregiver/care-recipient dyads from the community

Hostility, social support, and perceptions of work.

The aim of this study was to determine whether hostility and perceived availability of social support are related to perceptions of the work environment. The W.W. Cook and D.M. Medley (1954) Hostility (Ho) scale; the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (S. Cohen, R. Mermelstein, T. Kamarck, & H. Hoberman, 1985); and measures of collegiality, time pressure, and job dissatisfaction were completed by 204 attorneys (159 men and 45 women). After controlling for age, gender, and other job characteristics, high Ho scores were related to lower perceived supportive collegiality at work. Low perceived

Social support and the chronically ill individual.

Nurses caring for the chronically ill need to be alert for the problems of social isolation and social impairment. Families often respond initially to serious illness by becoming over-protective and fostering dependence and a sense of impaired competence in the ill person. As the illness continues, families often experience exhaustion because of the demands of new roles, depleted finances, and other aspects of a changed lifestyle. Feelings of anger, guilt, and helplessness occur in the network, often leading to withdrawal of support--especially as the ill person's ability to reciprocate suppor

Hostility, social support, and ambulatory cardiovascular activity.

The present study compared ambulatory blood pressure in male and female subjects preselected for high and low hostility levels and investigated interpersonal daily stress as a possible mediational mechanism. Ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate were measured in 48 male and female students previously classified as high or low on the Cook-Medley Hostility (Ho) Scale. Subjects wore an ambulatory monitor for a working day and also completed measures of perceived social support, daily interpersonal stress, and health behavior information. Results indicated that subjects scoring high on the Ho s

Measuring Perceived Social Support After Disaster: Development and Validation of the Perceived Social Support in Disasters Scale (PSSDS-28).

Background/Objectives: Measuring perceived social support after disaster remains an unresolved psychometric problem. Most instruments do not jointly capture the source of support (from whom it comes) and its function (how it operates). None has been validated in a disaster-survivor sample with retrospectively framed items. We developed and validated the Perceived Social Support in Disasters Scale (PSSDS-28), a 28-item measure integrating both dimensions. Methods: In Phase 1, a PRISMA 2020-guided systematic review; a two-round Delphi with eight experts, cognitive interviews (n = 12); and a pilo
