Evolutionary theory and social diversity are essential for understanding the developmental origins of human social cognition and attachment.

Bard et al. rightly call out Western-centric bias to champion Worldwide, in-Situ, Local and Diverse developmental research. Yet this inclusivity must be grounded in evolutionary theory to model development. Comparative evidence strengthens accounts of shared intentionality and attachment. Integrating within-species variation through WILD with between-species variation engaging evolutionary perspectives will offer more robust explanations of universal and diverse developmental pathways.

Remembering and forgetting: A dynamic social retrieval theory of posttraumatic stress.

Posttraumatic stress is about memory; distressing and intrusive memories of a traumatic event. Although considerable focus has been on initial encoding, memory processes after the traumatic event are likely as important if not more important for facilitating resilience, natural recovery, and therapeutic recovery. In this proposed dynamic social retrieval theory (DSRT) of posttraumatic stress, ongoing retrieval and related forgetting processes shape the changing nature of the trauma memory. Retrieval events number in the hundreds, thousands, or even more, strengthening some memory traces and as

Social anxiety is negatively associated with theory of mind and empathic accuracy.

Social anxiety interferes with accurate perceptions of others' thoughts and intentions, yet studies examining the association between social anxiety and social cognition have resulted in mixed findings. We examined the association between dimensional levels of social anxiety and assessments of lower- and higher-level social cognition. In Study 1 (n = 1485), we found that social anxiety was negatively related to accuracy in an assessment of higher-level social cognition (i.e., theory of mind) across all stimuli. However, no consistent association was found between social anxiety and accuracy in

Theory of mind in social anxiety disorder, depression, and comorbid conditions.

Social anxiety disorder is characterized by marked interpersonal impairment, particularly when presenting with comorbid major depression. However, the foundational social-cognitive skills that underlie interpersonal impairment in comorbid and non-comorbid manifestations of SAD has to date received very little empirical investigation. In a sample of 119 young adults, the current study examined differences in theory of mind (ToM), defined as the ability to decode and reason about others' mental states, across four groups: (a) non-comorbid SAD; (b) non-comorbid Lifetime MDD; (c) comorbid SAD and

Mediator effects in the social development model: an examination of constituent theories.

BACKGROUND: The social development model (SDM) provides an explanatory framework for the progression of antisocial behaviour in children and adolescents. Although previous research has assessed the predictive validity of the model, alternative associations based on the SDM's constituent theories have not been examined. METHOD: Using structural equation modelling, a series of direct paths was examined for mediation by SDM constructs. Data for the study consisted of teacher-, parent- and self-report of 1016 fourth- and fifth-grade students from the Raising Healthy Children project, a longitudin

Teenage fertility and its social integration correlates: a control theory explanation.

"This study uses control theory to explain teenage fertility in one [U.S.] southeastern state. Control theory explains deviance from societal norms in terms of weak social bonding or integration. An important assumption of the study is that teenage parenting violates American parenting norms, and can thus be conceptualized as deviant behavior. Consequently, this study hypothesizes that teenage fertility should covary with measures of social integration. This study uses data from 64 parishes in Louisiana, and the results suggest that measures of social integration (i.e., divorce rates, percenta

The impact of state and trait general and social anxiety on theory of mind.

Theory of mind is an important skill to function in society. There is evidence that anxiety can impair the ability to use this skill effectively; however, current research is inconclusive, uses heterogeneous measures of theory of mind, and lacks distinction between anxiety types, despite these being known to present differently in clinical populations. False belief tasks are standard practice for assessing theory of mind in children and autistic participants and have also been found to adequately detect theory of mind differences in neurotypical adults yet are not systematically used throughou

Application of social identity theory in group therapy with stigmatized adults.

Social identity theory was applied in group therapy for adults with mild mental retardation. Social identity theory suggests that social group membership, also called collective identity, has an impact on self-esteem. Individuals will try to maintain self-esteem by viewing their social groups positively. This may not be possible for individuals who are members of a stigmatized group. However, it may be possible to enhance self-esteem by broadening one's awareness of collective identity. Furthermore, being able to positively view other individuals who are co-members of one's own stigmatized gro

Applying Social Practice Theory to Explore Australian Preschool Children's Oral Health.

INTRODUCTION: Despite substantial research and provision of dental care, significant morbidity remains for children's oral health. Guided by social practice theory (SPT), this research moves away from the often-ineffective focus on changing individual behavior to rethinking the centrality of the social world in promoting or undermining oral health outcomes. We define social practice as a routinized relational activity linking and integrating certain elements (competence, materials, and meanings) into the performance of a practice that is reproduced across time and space. OBJECTIVE: To investi

Applying Differential Coercion and Social Support Theory to Intimate Partner Violence.

A review of the current body of literature on intimate partner violence (IPV) shows that the most common theories used to explain this public health issue are social learning theory, a general theory of crime, general strain theory, or a combination of these perspectives. Other criminological theories have received less empirical attention. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to apply Differential Coercion and Social Support (DCSS) theory to test its capability to explain IPV. Data collected from two public universities (N = 492) shows that three out of four measures of coercion (i.e., phy

Comparison of Social-Evaluative Anxiety and Theory of Mind Functions in Social Anxiety Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Healthy Controls.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the similarities in poor social competence and clinical manifestations of poor social behavior, no study has compared the theory of mind performance between social anxiety disorder (SAD) and schizophrenia, considering the effect of social-evaluative anxiety and neurocognitive functions. In our study, we aimed to compare the theory of mind functions and social-evaluative anxiety between patients with SAD and schizophrenia and healthy controls and to examine the relationship between the theory of mind, neurocognitive skills, and social-evaluative anxiety. Social network composition and inflammation at midlife: A socioemotional selectivity theory perspective.

The Socioemotional Selectivity Theory of aging posits that the narrowing of social networks with age may provide emotional benefits. It is unknown whether these benefits extend to measures of physical health, such as markers of inflammation. In a longitudinal midlife cohort, we (1) characterized age-related changes in social networks and inflammation, (2) tested associations between changes in social network composition and changes in inflammation, and (3) explored whether changes in positive affect or social support mediated these associations. At waves 1 and 2, ∼15 years later, participants

Evolutionary game theory and social learning can determine how vaccine scares unfold.

Immunization programs have often been impeded by vaccine scares, as evidenced by the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) autism vaccine scare in Britain. A "free rider" effect may be partly responsible: vaccine-generated herd immunity can reduce disease incidence to such low levels that real or imagined vaccine risks appear large in comparison, causing individuals to cease vaccinating. This implies a feedback loop between disease prevalence and strategic individual vaccinating behavior. Here, we analyze a model based on evolutionary game theory that captures this feedback in the context of vaccine sca

Insight into dementia care management using social-behavioral theory and mixed methods.

BACKGROUND: For health organizations (private and public) to advance their care-management programs, to use resources effectively and efficiently, and to improve patient outcomes, it is germane to isolate and quantify care-management activities and to identify overarching domains. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to identify and report on an application of mixed methods of qualitative statistical techniques, based on a theoretical framework, and to construct variables for factor analysis and exploratory factor analytic steps for identifying domains of dementia care management. Social anxiety, hypomania and the bipolar spectrum: data, theory and clinical issues.

Reports in the literature indicate a subtle but consistent relationship between panic and bipolar II disorder. The possible connection between social phobia and bipolarity is less investigated. When we studied the treatment outcome of 32 social phobic patients administered either the reversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (RIMA) meclobomide or the irreversible inhibitor MAOI phenelzine, we found that eighteen had remission > 50% of their socially anxious symptoms. Moreover, 14/18 of those improved became hypomanic, according to the Raskin Mania Scale (RMS) and the Young Mania Scale (YMS) coupl

Beyond social tinkering: Toward a mechanistic and multilevel theory of cultural complexity.

Chater and Christiansen argue that cultural complexity arises through social "tinkering." While compelling, this framework remains mechanistically underspecified. Integrating recent empirical and theoretical advances, this commentary proposes that cultural complexity emerges from interactions among transmission dynamics, cognitive constraints, social network structure, and environmental pressures and calls for a formalized, testable multilevel theory.

A developmental neuroscience of borderline pathology: emotion dysregulation and social baseline theory.

Theoretical and empirical research has linked poor emotion regulation abilities with dysfunctional frontolimbic circuitry. Consistent with this, research on borderline personality disorder (BPD) finds that frontolimbic dysfunction is a predominant neural substrate underlying the disorder. Emotion regulation is profoundly compromised in BPD. However, BPD is also associated with broad impairment across multiple domains, including impulse control, interpersonal relationships, and cognitive functioning. To date, BPD research has focused largely on single areas of dysfunction, failing to account fo

Affective Empathy, Theory of Mind and Social Functioning in Patients With Focal Epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Social cognition comprises basic and more complex functions, such as theory of mind (ToM) and affective empathy. Although everyday social interactions may be impaired if such higher-order social cognitive functions are compromised, associations between social functioning and social cognition in people with focal epilepsy (PWFE) are still poorly understood. We used a novel, naturalistic approach to investigate ToM in PWFE by applying the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC). Furthermore, we studied affective empathy, the relationship between social cognitive parameters

Incorporating life course theory and social determinants of health into the LEND curriculum.

The goal of this paper is to describe strategies for revising LEND curricula to incorporate a stronger focus on life course theory and social determinants of health (LCT/SDOH). The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) includes a central focus on LCT/SDOH and states that a goal of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) training is to "Prepare and empower MCH leaders to promote health equity…and reduce disparities in health and health care." Two LEND programs engaged in a comprehensive process to strengthen LCT/SDOH in their curricula that included choosing content and themes and developing instruct
