Caregiving activities causing occupational low back pain in Japanese social welfare facilities and hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Occupational low back pain (LBP) has increased in Japanese social welfare facilities and hospitals. Understanding its occurrence is the first step in addressing this issue. AIM: This study investigated the caregiving activities that cause occupational LBP incidents in these contexts. METHODS: The study analyzed 2,722 incidents of occupational LBP among staff in social welfare facilities and hospitals resulting in four or more days absent from work. Data were extracted from accident occurrences and causes in the 2018-2019 Reports of Worker Casualties. The caregiving situations rel

Review: The roles of individuality and social life in shaping positive animal welfare in livestock species.

Positive animal welfare (PAW) emphasises "a good life" marked by the experience of predominantly positive affective states, and the development of competence and resilience according to species-specific and individual capabilities. Even though the concept of PAW has received increasing attention in past years, guidance for shaping future PAW-friendly farming systems is lacking. As highly social species, farmed animals have the potential to experience a rich social life that can influence their welfare. This has often been studied through the lens of negative interactions. However, to advance r

Risk perception of falls on the same level at workplaces among social welfare workers in Japan.

Falls on the same level (FSLs) are a major cause of occupational injuries in the social welfare industry, especially in aging societies. Here, we conducted a questionnaire survey to investigate how social welfare workers perceive the risk of occupational accidents, with a focus on FSLs, and to examine the effects of age on risk perception. Respondents (n=294) rated their estimated likelihood of experiencing five major types of occupational accidents across six levels of injury severity. The results indicated that the FSL risk was not consistently underestimated relative to other accident types

Cultural Welfare as a relational form of urban social innovation: evidence from the city of Bologna.

Medium-sized European cities, often celebrated for their quality of life and civic culture, are increasingly experiencing subtle socio-economic and spatial pressures, such as demographic aging, housing strain, and commodification of urban centrality, that erode everyday proximity and social cohesion without surfacing as visible emergencies. Drawing on 26 in-depth interviews with third-sector and cultural organizations across Bologna, this article argues that Cultural Welfare represents a relational form of urban social innovation. Situated within the second-welfare framework, Cultural Welfare

Prisoners as Users of Digital Health Care and Social Welfare Services: A Finnish Attitude Survey.

Prisoners are a group of people with many health and social problems. However, in prisons the use of the Internet is controlled. Thus, prisoners' access to digital health care and social welfare services is limited. In addition, there are many cognitive and attitudinal barriers to the use of digital health care and social welfare services for prisoners. Cross-sectional survey data (N = 225) were collected from eleven prisons in different parts of Finland and analysed using linear regression analysis. The results are consistent with Ajzen's theory and previous studies on the acceptance of infor

Social-Emotional Screening Protocol Implementation: A Trauma-Informed Response for Young Children in Child Welfare.

Adverse childhood experiences in young children result in negative outcomes as trauma affects brain development. In child welfare services, early recognition of delayed social-emotional skills and treatment referral is essential in reducing the effects of trauma. This quality improvement pilot project implemented an evidence-based social-emotional screening protocol using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social Emotional-2 screening tool for very young children placed in out-of-home care through the county's child welfare system. Findings showed significant improvement in identification of c

Social life of captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in Southern India: implications for elephant welfare.

Asian elephants in the wild live in complex social societies; in captivity, however, management often occurs in solitary conditions, especially at the temples and private places of India. To investigate the effect of social isolation, this study assessed the social group sizes and the presence of stereotypies among 140 captive Asian elephants managed in 3 captive systems (private, temple, and forest department) in Tamil Nadu, India, between 2003 and 2005. The majority of the facilities in the private (82%) and temple (95%) systems held a single elephant without opportunity for social interacti

Patterns of Social Determinants of Health and Publicly-Funded Service Access among Children Involved in Educational, Child Welfare, and Social Service Systems.

Social determinants of health (SDOH)-conditions in which children live, learn, and play-affect child health and well-being. Publicly funded services in education and child welfare systems are important resources to support child well-being, but cross-system coordination is rare. Leveraging integrated administrative data from 60,287 6th graders enrolled in public schools in Minnesota, we used latent class analysis (LCA) to examine patterns of cross-system SDOH, including educational services and involvement in child welfare. Five classes emerged. The largest class was characterized by a few mul

Economic and Social Impacts of COVID-19 on Animal Welfare and Dairy Husbandry in Central Punjab, Pakistan.

Studies on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on animal welfare and dairy husbandry in low-income countries are limited. We conducted a survey between February and June 2020 to evaluate the economic impact and animal health problems upon the pandemic. Participants were lead veterinarians from 14 dairy farms with herd size between 100 and 500 in Lahore. These farms were major suppliers of milk and dairy products to central Punjab, Pakistan. During the pandemic, 10 of the 14 dairy farms relied on feed mill concentrates to provide feeds to their herds. Half of the farms reported feed shortage du

Effects of partial cage dividers on animal welfare and social behavior in California mice (Peromyscus californicus).

California mice (Peromyscus californicus) are an important model species for studying social behaviors that are not readily expressed in standard laboratory mouse and rat lines. Under natural conditions, this species is highly territorial, and both males and females exhibit high levels of aggression in laboratory conditions. Like other rodent species, fighting among cage-mates can create animal welfare problems for California mice. Here we tested whether the use of partial cage dividers could reduce the impact of cage-mate fighting in California mice. Partial cage dividers were made of polycar

Graduate Student Literature Review: Implications of preweaning social housing for long-term dairy cattle performance and welfare.

Dairy calf housing remains a focal point of discussion for producers, consumers, and animal welfare scientist. As animal welfare and animal care priorities shift, understanding the impacts social housing types has on the success of dairy heifers is vital for herd longevity and farm economics. Historically, dairy calves are reared in social isolation which can impair performance, behavior, and physiological development. Conversely, social housing of dairy heifers has yielded numerous short-term benefits surrounding cognitive and behavioral development, performance, and the formation of social b

Trajectories of change in caregiver social supports: Associations with child maltreatment among families with child welfare involvement.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that families with child welfare contact experience substantially limited access to social supports, a key protective factor against child maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: This study examined dynamic trajectories of caregivers' functional social supports (i.e., confidant, instrumental, and affective support) over time in relation to risk for maltreatment. METHODS: Participants were 707 caregivers of infants and toddlers with child welfare contact. Repeated-measures latent class analysis was used to profile trajectories of caregiver social supports across a five-year per

Forage, freedom of movement, and social interactions remain essential fundamentals for the welfare of high-level sport horses.

Societal concerns for animal welfare extend to all domestic species, including high-level sport horses. The welfare of these horses, notably highlighted during the recent Olympics, has garnered significant public interest, prompting inquiries into their living conditions. Animal welfare studies have emphasised three key needs crucial to equine welfare: unlimited access to forage, freedom of movement, and social interactions with peers, commonly referred to as the "3Fs"-access to Forage, Freedom of movement, and interactions with Friend conspecifics. However, the feasibility and benefits of sat

Street-Level Strategies of Child Welfare Social Workers in Flanders: The Use of Electronic Client Records in Practice.

The use of information and communication technology (ICT) in child welfare services has increased significantly during the last decades, and so have the possibilities to process health data. Parton (2009) states that this evolution has led to a shift in the nature of social work itself: from 'the social' to 'the informational'. It is claimed that social workers primarily are becoming information processors concerned with the gathering, sharing and monitoring of information, instead of being focused on the relational dimensions of their work. However, social workers have considerable discretion

Psychological, social, and welfare interventions for torture survivors: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Torture and other forms of ill treatment have been reported in at least 141 countries, exposing a global crisis. Survivors face multiple physical, psychological, and social difficulties. Psychological consequences for survivors are varied, and evidence on treatment is mixed. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the benefits and harms of psychological, social, and welfare interventions for torture survivors. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We updated a 2014 review with published randomised controlled trials (RCTs) for adult survivors of torture comparing any psychol

Digital Divide in Perceived Benefits of Online Health Care and Social Welfare Services: National Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: The number of online services in health care is increasing rapidly in developed countries. Users are expected to take a more skilled and active role in taking care of their health and prevention of ill health. This induces risks that users (especially those who need the services the most) will drop out of digital services, resulting in a digital divide or exclusion. To ensure wide and equal use of online services, all users must experience them as beneficial. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine associations of (1) demographics (age, gender, and degree of urbanization), (2) self
