Social dysfunction in Ecuadorian, Peruvian, and Venezuelan media workers.

The personal, occupational and psychosocial risk and protection factors associated with social dysfunction in media workers are analyzed. A total of 314 workers were surveyed. Data were collected on personal and occupational variables, and scales were administered to assess coping styles, perceived loneliness, emotional impact of the health emergency, and social dysfunction, which was measured using Scale C of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28). It was found that 19.7% were at risk of social dysfunction. This risk was particularly evident among workers without a formal partner and those

Substance Use and Mental Health among Canadian Social Workers.

This article reports the findings of an online survey designed to collect information about substance use (licit, illicit, or pharmaceutical) and mental health (depression or anxiety) among social workers. Among the 489 participants, Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) screenings indicated symptoms of depression and anxiety at a higher prevalence than those of the general Canadian population. There were relatively few correlations between mental health scores and substance use. PHQ-9 total score significantly predicted past-year antidepressant use and

["Index for rehabilitation eligibility" for screening social insurance workers].

The principle "priority of rehabilitation over early retirement" might be realised by a screening by which employees in need of rehabilitation are detected in time and rehabilitation measures are purposively started. With the "Index of Rehabilitation Need" we continued our efforts to develop an applicable screening tool on an epidemiological basis. To this end (1) longitudinal data were established by repeating an epidemiological survey of a population sample in the Nordenham/Brake region (T0 = 1975/76, T1 = 1992/93); (2) T0-variables were identified which correlated significantly with the eve

Social Workers in Animal Shelters: A Strategy Toward Reducing Occupational Stress Among Animal Shelter Workers.

Animal shelter workers (ASWs) are at disproportionate risk of moral injury, secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, and burn-out. While there is an emerging body of literature developing on understanding the nuances of these experiences for ASWs, little work has been done on developing strategies to ameliorate occupational stressors and the negative effects of such for ASWs. Within this paper, occupational risks and protective factors for ASWs are summarized, and the emergence of social work within animal shelter settings as one strategy for helping to ameliorate the occupational stress experien

Training for social prescribing link workers: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social prescribing involves connecting people to community-based resources to address non-medical determinants of health. Central to its delivery are link workers; their effectiveness depends, in part, on the availability and quality of training. Despite rapid expansion of the link worker role on an international scale, training provision for this workforce remains fragmented and poorly mapped. AIM: To identify and describe training programmes for link workers reported in the published and grey literature. METHODS: We followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology on scoping re

Social phobia in disabled workers with chronic musculoskeletal pain.

The present study assessed the prevalence and impact of social phobia and other anxiety disorders in disabled workers with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Potential participants were 200 disabled workers consecutively referred to an interdisciplinary tertiary care centre. A two stage screening process was used in which: (a) a self-report battery was given during a pre-admission visit, and (b) pre-planned selection criteria were applied to the self-report instruments to select patients for a structured diagnostic interview. Fifty-four of the 146 patients who provided complete responses on the sel

Reentry Program and Social Work Education: Training the Next Generation of Criminal Justice Social Workers.

PURPOSE: Social work plays a marginal role in opposing the trend of mass incarceration and high rates of recidivism, and social work education offers limited opportunities for students to specialize in working with people who are currently or were previously incarcerated. How to train students of social work to work against mass-incarceration is still challenging. METHODS: The authors devised and implemented an in-school social service agency devoted to working with people pre and post release from a prison system. The agency is a field practicum setting where interested students study and pr

Short-term effects of social stressors at work on rumination and physical symptoms in social workers.

The present study focuses on social stressors at work and the development of physical symptoms in social workers on a daily basis. In a seven-day diary study it was anticipated that daily rumination functions as a mediator, linked to additional daily physical symptoms in individuals. Before and after work, 81 social workers completed daily questions on social stressors, rumination, and physical symptoms. Multilevel analyses of up to 391 daily measurements revealed that more intense social stressors predicted more rumination, as well as physical symptoms. Rumination anteceded higher physical sy

Interdisciplinary expectations of the medical social worker in the hospital setting.

Nearly 500 physicians, nurses, and social workers affiliated with four general hospitals participated in a mailed questionnaire survey designed to compare interprofessional expectations of the medical social worker role in the hospital. As hypothesized, physicians and nurses expect the exclusive role of the social worker to be more limited to working with families, resolving social-environmental problems, and providing referrals than social workers expect of their role. In general, physicians and nurses do not disagree with medical social workers on what social workers expect to do in the hosp

Vaccination coverage among social and healthcare workers in ten countries of Samu-social international sites.

BACKGROUND: We aim to determine the vaccination coverage of social and healthcare workers in International sites of Samusocial, providing emergency care to homeless people, and to assess factors associated with having received necessary doses at adulthood. METHODS: Data on immunization coverage of social and healthcare workers were provided by a cross-sectional survey, conducted from February to April 2015 among 252 Samusocial workers in 10 countries. Vaccination status and characteristics of participants were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Prevalence rate ratio (PRR) of

Where Are All the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Social Workers?

Pediatric and adolescent gynecology (PAG) is a growing specialty, but despite the complexity of many patients' experiences, few hospitals employ dedicated social workers trained to support these patients and their families. This is true despite the fact that PAG providers routinely care for individuals with multiple conditions where patients and families could benefit from support around long-term implications for reproductive health and fertility; surgical decision making; counseling in the wake of sexual trauma; comprehensive sex education and counseling; and referrals to other social servic

Behavioral-Social Rhythms and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Retired Night Shift Workers and Retired Day Workers.

OBJECTIVE: Stability in the timing of key daily routine behaviors such as working/doing housework, sleeping, eating, and engaging in social interactions (i.e., behavioral-social rhythms) contributes to health. This study examined whether behavioral-social rhythms were associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in retired night shift workers and retired day workers and explored whether past night shift work exposure moderated this association. METHODS: A total of 154 retired older adults participated in this study. Multiple logistic regression models were used to examine associa

Social Workers in Primary Care Increase Access to Palliative Care

Abstract Clinical trials show that palliative care improves patient experiences and reduces costs, and use of palliative care and hospice care have been increasing over the past three decades. In the Veterans Administration health care system (VA), Veterans may receive palliative care concurrently with other treatments. However, many barriers exist to the use of palliative care, such as patients’ misperceptions. Social workers in primary care teams may increase use of this valuable service by establishing trust between patient and care team, educating patients and caregivers, and coordinating
