Emotion socialization practices in non-biological parents of children with FASD.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) represent highly prevalent neurodevelopmental and physical differences associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. People with FASD have difficulty with emotion regulation and are often living with non-biological parents. Caregiver emotion socialization practices have been robustly associated with child emotion regulation development in other populations. Yet no research to date has examined the impact of caregiver factors such as age, relationship to child, and trauma on emotion socialization practices in children with FASD. This research is

Socialization, personality development, and the child's environments: comment on Vandell (2000).

Although many socialization agents influence children's behavior (D. L. Vandell, 2000), the evidence (e.g., from intervention studies) indicates that each exerts its influence only within its own domain. Context effects and genetic effects are among the confounding factors that make it impossible, given current data, to reject the null hypothesis of zero long-term effects of parenting on child outcomes. Problems with the prevailing view of development cannot be solved by invoking within-home environmental differences or gene- environment interactions. Group socialization theory can account for

Navigating family: Immigrant-origin Latinx youth perspectives on parental sociopolitical socialization.

Latinx youth navigate unique sociopolitical contexts shaped by anti-immigrant rhetoric and cultural values like familism. This qualitative study examined how 23 immigrant-origin Latinx older adolescents (Mage = 20.22) perceived their parents' role in their sociopolitical development. Using a modified constructivist grounded theory, we found that parents contributed to participants' sociopolitical development through indirect (affirming Latin American identity, imparting communal values) and direct (modeling engagement, providing encouragement) socialization practices. Socialization occurred pr

Research on the Impact of Workaholic Leadership on Newcomer Organizational Socialization.

To investigate the mechanisms underlying how workaholic leadership influences newcomers' organizational socialization outcomes, this study integrates social learning theory to construct a moderated mediation model, introducing newcomer work engagement as the mediator and leader identification as the moderator. Utilizing a sample of 375 newcomers from a textile and apparel enterprise in Shandong Province, China, our empirical analysis revealed that workaholic leadership fosters newcomers' task mastery, role clarity, and social integration by enhancing their work engagement. Furthermore, leader

Beyond the Gender Differences: Gendered Socialization Impact on Gaze-Cueing Effect.

Previous work has demonstrated that women exhibit stronger gaze-cueing effects than men; however, the nature of this heightened sensitivity to gaze directions has not been investigated. Thus, the current study investigates the role of gendered socialization processes in contributing to gender differences in gaze-cueing effects. In Experiment 1, participants completed a gaze-cueing experiment and a series of questionnaires to investigate the impacts of gendered socialization on any observed gender differences in gaze-cueing effects. In Experiment 2, we eliminated the social aspects of the cues

Ethnic racial socialization within and across black immigrant and nonimmigrant families.

INTRODUCTION: Ethnic-racial socialization (ERS) is a protective mechanism used by Black parents to instill cultural pride and communicate information about race, ethnicity, and racism to their children. To date, few studies have examined the similarities and differences that exist in the messages that Black nonimmigrant and Black immigrant parents share. Additionally, little is known about whether discrepancies between parent and adolescent reports of ethnic racial socialization differ for Black immigrants and nonimmigrant families. METHODS: The current study examines these potential differen

Effect of Socialization on Alzheimer's Disease During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Age is the strongest risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative disease where beta-amyloid plaques accumulate in the brain. Elderly individuals, especially those in nursing homes, were burdened by social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this literature review is to describe the effectiveness of social engagement and how combating isolation can have a neuroprotective effect on individuals at risk for Alzheimer's disease. We conducted a search in PubMed examining articles from 2010 to 2023 that discussed the impact of socialization on Alzheimer's disease, part

Emotion socialization profiles in military parents: Associations with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Military families face many difficulties, including a parent deploying to a warzone and the subsequent risk of returning with symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Symptoms of PTSD are associated with parenting difficulties; however, little is known about how PTSD symptoms may be associated with emotion socialization (ES), a set of processes crucial to children's emotional well-being. This project investigated observed ES behaviors in deployed and non-deployed parents in a sample of 224 predominantly White, non-Hispanic National Guard/Reserve (NG/R) families with deployed fathers,

Hippotherapy as a treatment for socialization after sexual abuse and emotional stress.

[Purpose] Hippotherapy is a therapeutic resource that uses the horse as a kinesiotherapy instrument to elicit motor and cognitive improvements in individuals with special needs. [Subjects and Methods] This research evaluated two women aged 18 and 21 years, who had suffered sexual violence when they were children between the ages of 6 and 7 years old. The subjects did not have mental dysfunction but they were regular students registered at a school of special education. The patients presented severe motor limitation, difficulty with coordination, significant muscular retractions, thoracic and c

Home activities of Mexican American children: structuring early socialization and cognitive engagement.

The question of how home activities advance the early social and cognitive development of Latino children receives growing attention from psychologists and social scientists. Some scholars and practitioners, focused on promoting "school readiness," frame the problem as weak parenting, signaled by insufficient rich language or academic skills. Other theorists, rooted in ecocultural theory, argue that early socialization and cognitive engagement are culturally situated within routine home activities. These activity structures vary and change over time as families acculturate, adapting to local s

Childhood experience, interpersonal development, and reproductive strategy: and evolutionary theory of socialization.

The concept of "reproductive strategy" drawn from the field of behavioral ecology is applied to the study of childhood experience and interpersonal development in order to develop an evolutionary theory of socialization. The theory is presented in terms of 2 divergent development pathways considered to promote reproductive success in the contexts in which they have arisen. One is characterized, in childhood, by a stressful rearing environment and the development of insecure attachments to parents and subsequent behavior problems; in adolescence by early pubertal development and precocious sexu

Strength Amid Strain: Coping, Racism, and Racial Socialization Stress in Black Caregivers.

This study examined Black caregivers' affective responses to racial discrimination (i.e., the extent to which they reported being bothered by discriminatory experiences) and how these responses were associated with stress associated with navigating racial socialization practices (i.e., stress during conversations about race and racism with children). We further tested whether coping self-efficacy beliefs (i.e., problem-focused coping, suppressing unpleasant emotions and thoughts, and seeking support from family and friends) moderated the association between racial discrimination and racial soc

Preparation for bias, racial-ethnic socialization competency, and Latinx adolescent mental health.

Although parental preparation for bias messages theoretically protect adolescents from the damaging impact of discrimination, they have been linked to mental health challenges in Latinx adolescents. Parental racial-ethnic socialization (RES) competency has been proposed to potentially explain this discrepancy. The present study examined whether RES competency (confidence, skill, stress) moderated the relation between parental preparation for bias and adolescent mental health symptoms (internalizing and externalizing) in Latinx families. Latinx parents (N = 210, Mage = 42.63, SD = 8.68, 56% fem

Adolescent Mental Health in the Context of Discrimination: Examining Multiracial Racial Socialization.

There is limited research on racial socialization and its potential protective effect on youth mental health within Multiracial families. With a sample of Multiracial families (N = 209; 46% female youth), we investigated associations between adolescent experiences of racial discrimination (parent and youth reports at ages 14 and 16) and racial socialization (observational task at age 14) on depressive symptoms (youth report at age 16). Multiracial youth with more experiences of discrimination had more depressive symptoms. Multiracial youth who received more racial socialization in the form of

Friendship Network and School Socialization Correlates of Adolescent Ethnic-Racial Identity Development.

Ethnic-racial identity (ERI) development is consequential for youth adjustment and includes exploration, resolution, and affect about the meaning of one's ethnic-racial group membership. Little is known about how identity-relevant experiences, such as ethnic-racial socialization and discrimination in peer relationships and school contexts, catalyze adolescent ERI development. The present study examines how identity-relevant experiences in friend and school contexts (i.e., proportion of same-ethnoracial friends, cultural socialization among friends, friends' ERI dimensions, friends' experiences

Between psychopathy and deviant socialization: A close look at the mafia men.

The Italian mafia organizations represent a subculture with values, beliefs and goals that are antithetical to and undermining of the predominant society. The conduct of individual members includes such extreme violence for material gain, it may at least superficially suggest a severe personality disorder. Since the first edition of the DSM and into the 21st century, various terms have been used, sometimes interchangeably, but over time inconsistently, to designate the mentality and practices of mafia members. Only recently has the psychology of mafia members become a focus of serious scientif
