Patient Perceptions of the Adequacy of Supplemental Oxygen Therapy. Results of the American Thoracic Society Nursing Assembly Oxygen Working Group Survey.

RATIONALE: Pulmonary clinicians and patients anecdotally report barriers to home supplemental oxygen services including inadequate supply, unacceptable portable options, and equipment malfunction. Limited evidence exists to describe or quantify these problems. OBJECTIVES: To describe the frequency and type of problems experienced by supplemental oxygen users in the United States. METHODS: The Patient Supplemental Oxygen Survey, a self-report questionnaire, was posted on the American Thoracic Society Public Advisory Roundtable and patient and health care-affiliated websites. Respondents were

Living with peripartum cardiomyopathy: A statement from the Heart Failure Association and the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions of the European Society of Cardiology.

This statement focuses on the fact that women with peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) have a substantial mortality and morbidity rate. Less than 50% of patients have full recovery of their cardiac function within 6 months of diagnosis. Also, patients with recovered cardiac function often suffer from comorbidities, such as hypertension or arrhythmias, which require long-term treatment. This has major implications which extend beyond the life of the patient, as it may also substantially impact her family. Women with a new diagnosis of PPCM should be involved in the decision-making processes regard

Recommendations for blood sampling in emergency departments from the European Society for Emergency Medicine (EUSEM), European Society for Emergency Nursing (EuSEN), and European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) Working Group for the Preanalytical Phase. Executive summary.

AIM: Blood Sampling Guidelines have been developed to target European emergency medicine-related professionals involved in the blood sampling process (e.g. physicians, nurses, phlebotomists working in the ED), as well as laboratory physicians and other related professionals. The guidelines population focus on adult patients. The development of these blood sampling guidelines for the ED setting is based on the collaboration of three European scientific societies that have a role to play in the preanalytical phase process: EuSEN, EFLM, and EUSEM. Diet and nutrition in cardiovascular disease prevention: a scientific statement of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology and the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing & Allied Professions of the European Society of Cardiology.

What we eat is a cornerstone of cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention, but health professionals may not have a clear understanding of the current evidence-based research to underpin eating habits and recommendations. This study aims to appraise existing evidence-based research on the importance of diet on CVD risk biomarkers, specifically, the effects of dietary patterns, specific foods, and constituents including vitamins/minerals and plant-derived bioactive compounds on CVD risk. Plant-based dietary patterns rich in minimally processed foods, vegetables, and fruits reduce CVD risk, while p

Nutritional support in stem cell transplantation programs: Results from a multicenter survey of nurses on behalf of the Nurses Group and Transplant Complications Working Party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the Gruppo Italiano Trapianto di Midollo Osseo.

OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) can develop rapidly without appropriate nutritional support and affect morbidity and mortality. Guidance to monitor and manage nutrition status is described within the literature; however, whether this is applied in clinical practice is unclear. METHODS: This paper describes a cross-sectional survey to explore current practice approaches in nutrition support management and adherence to international guidelines. RESULTS: A total of 108 nurses from 108 centers across 16 countries replied to the questionna

Call to action on use and reimbursement for home blood pressure monitoring: a joint scientific statement from the American Heart Association, American Society Of Hypertension, and Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association.

Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) overcomes many of the limitations of traditional office blood pressure (BP) measurement and is both cheaper and easier to perform than ambulatory BP monitoring. Monitors that use the oscillometric method are currently available that are accurate, reliable, easy to use, and relatively inexpensive. An increasing number of patients are using them regularly to check their BP at home, but although this has been endorsed by national and international guidelines, detailed recommendations for their use have been lacking. There is a rapidly growing literature showi

[A specialist nurse consultation for post-transplant follow-up of patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation: Recommendations of the Francophone Society of Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (SFGM-TC)].

The number of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is in constant rise. This increase has put in spotlight the lack of physician availability. Some healthcare centers have already organised a nurse's consultation under the supervision of an expert physician. We conducted a survey among nurses and physicians from the French Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cell Therapy (SFGM-TC) centers who confirmed the need to create a special transplantation-skilled population of nurses. During this ninth annual workshop of the SFGM-TC, we have defined the required conditions for a transplant nu

Ethical issues in the response to Ebola virus disease in US emergency departments: a position paper of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Emergency Nurses Association and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine.

The 2014 outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in West Africa has presented a significant public health crisis to the international health community and challenged US emergency departments to prepare for patients with a disease of exceeding rarity in developed nations. With the presentation of patients with Ebola to US acute care facilities, ethical questions have been raised in both the press and medical literature as to how US emergency departments, emergency physicians, emergency nurses and other stakeholders in the healthcare system should approach the current epidemic and its potential fo

Report of the Psychosocial Outcomes Workgroup of the Nursing and Social Sciences Council of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation: present status of research on psychosocial outcomes in cardiothoracic transplantation: review and recommendations for the field.

Cardiothoracic transplantation's success at prolonging life--and its economic costs--must be considered relative to its psychosocial benefits and costs. Moreover, psychosocial outcomes themselves influence long-term post-transplant morbidity and mortality rates. Although psychosocial outcomes--encompassing patients' physical, psychologic and social functioning, their management of their medical regimen and global quality of life--are the focus of many recent studies, these investigations have yet to yield many evidence-based interventions that are routinely applied to improve patient outcomes.
