The aim of this study is to explore the association between grandparental socioeconomic disadvantages and grandchild psychiatric disorders, the role of parental socioeconomic and psychosocial factors in this association, as well as potential gender differences. We utilized a cohort study design using data from the Stockholm Birth Cohort Multigenerational Study, including 11,299 individuals born in 1953 (parental generation), their 22,598 parents (grandparental generation), and 24,707 adult children (grandchild generation). Grandparental and parental socioeconomic disadvantages, respectively, i

Socioeconomic status and race/ethnicity are widely understood to be determinants of adverse birth outcomes, but studies have been limited by lack of income data in health records and aggregation of racial groups in reporting. This study aims to evaluate the relationship of socioeconomic status to extreme preterm birth outcomes in the diverse ethnic population of Hawai'i. Statistical analyses were conducted on Hawai'i birth records 2004-2013 linked to American Community Survey data by maternal residence. Community-level income demographics were stratified into wealth quintiles and stratum speci

It is unclear if socioeconomic status (SES) factors influence severity of illness of patients hospitalized with bronchiolitis. This study was conducted to identify SES factors including the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Social Vulnerability Composite Index (SVI), estimated income, proportion of minority, proportion of living below poverty, insurance status, and number of household members associated with length of stay (LOS) and intensive care unit admission. Infants hospitalized at a tertiary care urban center for bronchiolitis were identified using International Classification

Cancer patients can be well-connected to resources during treatment but become lost to follow-up and subsequently may receive treatment in free clinics for chronic morbidities. Few studies have examined outcomes for uninsured patients with cancer histories in free clinics, but research examining socioeconomic determinants emphasizes poor cancer outcomes for patients with lower socioeconomic statuses (SES).Demographic data and chronic disease measures were extracted from medical charts of patients treated in 8 free clinics in 2016 in Tampa Bay. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coe

Kidney failure or ESRD affects approximately 650,000 Americans, whereas the number with earlier stages of CKD is much higher. Although CKD and ESRD are usually associated with adulthood, it is likely that the initial stages of CKD begin early in life. Many of these pathways are associated with low birth weight and disadvantaged socioeconomic status (SES) in childhood, translating childhood risk into later-life CKD and kidney failure. Social factors are thought to be fundamental causes of disease. Although the relationship between adult SES and CKD has been well established, the role of early c

Demographic and clinical risk factors are important in guiding vaccination policy for pneumococcal pneumonia. We present data on these variables from a population-based surveillance network covering adult bacteraemic pneumococcal pneumonia (BPP) in the Delaware Valley region from 2002 to 2004. Surveillance data were used with U.S. Census data and a community health survey to calculate stratified incidence rates. Missing data were handled using multiple imputation. Overall rates of adult BPP were 10.6 cases/100 000 person-years. Elevated rates were seen in the elderly (>65 years), Native Americ

BACKGROUND: Since the introduction of biologics for psoriasis, uptake has been uneven and limited. Few studies have investigated the influence of socioeconomic factors on access to biologics.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate how socioeconomic factors influenced access to biologics.
METHODS: Biologic-naïve patients in the Swedish National Register for Systemic Treatment of Psoriasis (PsoReg) for the years 2006-2014 were included. For patients who remained on nonbiologic treatments during their entire registration (n = 1851), the most recent registration was analyzed. For patients who began treatment

There are over 29,000 children and young people (CYP) with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in England and Wales and another 726 with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). There is little effect of deprivation on the prevalence of T1DM whereas the association of deprivation on the percentage of CYP with T2DM is striking with 45% of cases drawn from the most deprived backgrounds. A number that has not changed over the last 4 years. Data from the UK and USA as well as other countries demonstrate the impact of deprivation on outcomes in diabetes mellitus with clear effects on measures of long-term cont

Diagnostic delay is common in hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), yet the influence of socioeconomic status remains poorly understood. In this cross-sectional study of patients with HS enrolled in a single-institution longitudinal cohort, time to diagnosis was 53% shorter among patients with less than a bachelor's degree and 73.1% longer among those living in nonmetropolitan or smaller metropolitan areas. Time to diagnosis was not associated with Hurley stage. Larger studies are needed to clarify socioeconomic drivers of delayed HS diagnosis and disease outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Spondylodiscitis is classically believed to reflect intravenous drug use in urban centers, hemodialysis-associated complications, and generalized poor medical care, but these associations may be more complex and reflect underlying systemic societal problems. The authors sought to characterize socioeconomic and demographic elements associated with spondylodiscitis to better understand community factors placing patients at risk of this infection.
METHODS: All cases of spondylodiscitis at an urban, tertiary-level academic hospital since 2015 were surveyed. The zip code of residence fo

Leptospirosis is an epidemic-prone zoonotic disease that occurs worldwide, with more than 500,000 human cases reported annually. It is influenced by environmental and socioeconomic factors that affect the occurrence of outbreaks and the incidence of the disease. Critical areas and potential drivers for leptospirosis outbreaks have been identified in Nicaragua, where several conditions converge and create an appropriate scenario for the development of leptospirosis. The objectives of this study were to explore possible socioeconomic variables related to leptospirosis critical areas and to const

OBJECTIVE: Malignant cutaneous melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer, and its early detection and prompt initiation of treatment play an important role in reducing disease-associated morbidity and mortality. Many factors influence the diagnosis of melanoma, and its recognition is essential for the development of strategies for its early detection. This study was carried out to Identify the main variables related to the delay in diagnosis of Malignant Cutaneous Melanoma and correlate them with the time interval for making the definitive diagnosis.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Celiac disease (CD) affects approximately 1% of the population and negatively affects aspects of life including physical and social function. The relationship between socioeconomic (SE) factors, symptom severity, and perceived burden of living with CD is not well understood. The objective of this study was to assess the relationships between income, symptoms, and perceived burden of CD.
METHODS: In this survey study conducted at a tertiary care center, 773 patients 18 years of age or more with biopsy confirmed CD were eligible to participate. Patients completed a survey wit

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown an increase in the incidence of orbital and skull base erosion in African Americans and males diagnosed with allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS). However, underlying reasons for the advanced presentation of AFRS in certain ethnic and gender groups are currently unknown. We evaluated several socioeconomic and demographic factors for their possible contribution to advanced presentation of AFRS in our patient population. Such factors have not been examined previously in the literature. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of race, ethnic

OBJECTIVES: We studied the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and asthma symptoms, severity of asthma, atopy, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) to methacholine.
METHODS: We studied 1232 men and women born between 1974 and 1978 in a semirural area of Chile. We assessed asthma symptoms with a standardized questionnaire, atopy with a skin-prick test to 8 allergens, and BHR to methacholine with the tidal breathing method. SES was derived from several indicators: education, occupation, completion of a welfare form, belongings, housing, number of siblings, and overcrowding.

BACKGROUND: Two strong risk factors for gastroschisis are young maternal age (<20 years) and low/normal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), yet the reasons remain unknown. We explored whether neighborhood-level socioeconomic position (nSEP) during pregnancy modified these associations.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 1269 gastroschisis cases and 10,217 controls in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (1997-2011). To characterize nSEP, we applied the neighborhood deprivation index and used generalized estimating equations to calculate odds ratios and relative excess risk due to interact

IMPORTANCE: Conventional frameworks often attribute migrant health disparities to language barriers, legal exclusion, or socioeconomic deprivation. However, it remains unclear whether health inequities persist when these structural barriers are removed. Isolating the impact of historical and intergenerational trauma requires examining a unique minoritized population that shares full citizenship and linguistic heritage with the host society.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify the explanatory power of conventional demographic, socioeconomic, and family determinants on health disparities in a fully integrat
