An anti-I cold auto-agglutinin enhanced in the presence of sodium azide.

Difficulty in determining the ABO blood group led to the discovery of an anti-I cold auto-agglutinin in the serum of a blood donor. The peculiarity of this antibody is that its activity is enhanced in the presence of a preservative found in manufactured anti-sera: sodium azide. At 4 degrees C, the auto-antibody agglutinates RBCs even without NaN3 but the drug increases its effect in the cold. At 22 degrees C, the drug is necessary for the adsorption of the antibody on red cells.

Potential therapies for sodium azide intoxication; a case report and review of the literature.

Intoxications with sodium azide are rare and in almost all cases lethal in doses above 700 mg or 10mg/kg. We report a case of a patient who ingested 2 grams of sodium azide as a suicide attempt. Sodium azide irreversible blocks cytochrome C oxidase by inhibiting oxidative phosphorylation leading to cell death. There is currently no antidote available. Our patient was treated with a range of therapies, on site, in the emergency department and in the intensive care unit, such as sodium thiosulphate, methylene blue, intralipid, extensive gastric lavage, whole bowel irrigation combined with pro-ki

[Comparison of the effectiveness of sodium azide and merthiolate as bacteriocidal agents--a NMR study].

The pseudohalogenide sodium azide (NaN3) and the organometallic mercury compound merthiolate (sodium salt of ethyl mercurithiosalicylate) are commonly used as preserving solutions for biomaterials. In the present paper, these preserving solutions were compared for their efficacy in preserving porcine articular cartilage. For this purpose, porcine articular cartilage was incubated with phosphate buffer containing the corresponding amounts of NaN3 or merthiolate. Supernatants were assayed using NMR spectroscopy, and the content of soluble saccharides was determined using the dye Alcian blue. The

[Sodium azide poisoning--a rare reason of hospitalization in toxicological units--case report].

Sodium azide poisonings are a rare reason for hospitalization in toxicological units. They are observed as rarely as once within a number of years per hospital. Consequently, an algorithm for the optimum procedure of treating such intoxications does not exist and, as a result, there is a need to describe every single clinical case. A female, aged 55, was directed to the toxicological unit from a county hospital after swallowing four tablets of sodium azide, 150 mg each, in the form of preservative for fresh milk samples. Two hours after the incident a gastric lavage was performed and the table

Photopic c-wave in the chicken ERG: sensitivity to sodium azide, epinephrine, sodium iodate, barbiturates, and other general anesthetics.

The c-wave recorded in the chicken electroretinogram proved to be a cone-triggered component. The questions arose whether its reactivity to various specific drugs (sodium iodate, sodium azide, epinephrine, or barbiturates) were similar to those described for classic rod-triggered c-waves. We also tested the sensitivity of the chicken c-wave to various general anesthetics. Urethane was found to be the drug that best preserves the c-wave in electrophysiological recordings.

Inhibitory effects of sodium azide on microbial growth in experimental resuspension of marine sediment.

Sodium azide (NaN3) was evaluated as inhibitor of microbial growth and activity in marine sediment resuspensions by monitoring the abundance of free-living and sessile bacteria using both flow cytometry and qPCR methods. Results show that 50mM of NaN3 strongly inhibits bacterial growth under natural and enriched resource conditions.

Comparison of sodium azide- and cooling-based immobilization methods for Caenorhabditis elegans chemotaxis assays.

Chemotaxis assays are widely used to quantify sensory-driven behavioral responses in Caenorhabditis elegans . Sodium azide is commonly used to immobilize animals at assay endpoints, although concerns have been raised that diffusion beyond the endpoint region could affect behavior before a choice is completed. We compared sodium azide-mediated immobilization with post-assay cooling using the repellent 1-octanol and attractant diacetyl. Wild-type animals showed robust avoidance of 30% 1-octanol and attraction to 0.5% diacetyl with either method, across multiple assay durations, and with or witho

Neuroprotective effects of hydrogen sulfide on sodium azide-induced oxidative stress in PC12 cells.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder, responsible for >50% of all dementia cases. Sodium azide (NaN3) inhibits cytochrome oxidase by irreversibly binding to the heme cofactor and selectively reducing the complex IV activity, which is present in post‑mortem AD brains. Previous data demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide (H2S), the third endogenous gaseous mediator, exerted protective effects against neuronal damage. Therefore, it was hypothesized that H2S may be able to scavenge excess reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby protecting against oxidative stress and c

Neuroprotective effects of hydrogen sulfide on sodium azide‑induced autophagic cell death in PC12 cells.

Sodium azide (NaN3) is a chemical of rapidly growing commercial importance. It is very acutely toxic and inhibits cytochrome oxidase (COX) by binding irreversibly to the heme cofactor. A previous study from our group demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide (H2S), the third endogenous gaseous mediator identified, had protective effects against neuronal damage induced by traumatic brain injury (TBI). It is well‑known that TBI can reduce the activity of COX and have detrimental effects on the central nervous system metabolism. Therefore, in the present study, it was hypothesized that H2S may provide n

Effect of sodium azide on catecholamine release from isolated adrenal gland and on guanylate cyclase.

Sodium azide and other compounds which activate guanylate cyclase could stimulate catecholamine (CA) release from perfused dog adrenals. Verapamil reduced the secretory effect of sodium azide, but atropine and hexamethonium did not affect it while isobutyl methylxanthine potentiated it. Ca2+ deprivation abolished the stimulating effect of sodium azide on CA release and cyclic AMP output but the increased output of cyclic GMP remained. These results suggest the involvement of the Ca2+ influx mechanism in the secretory action of sodium azide.

Intratubular application of sodium azide inhibits loop of Henle reabsorption and tubuloglomerular feedback response in anesthetized rats.

Sodium azide (NaN3, AZ) is a potent inhibitor and uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation as well as a nitrovasodilator after being converted to nitric oxide (NO). We studied the effect of intratubular application of AZ on loop of Henle reabsorption and tubuloglomerular feedback (TGF) employing renal micropuncture experiments in nephrons with superficial glomeruli of anesthetized Munich-Wistar-Fromter rats. During perfusion of Henle's loop downstream from an obstructing wax block, AZ (3x10(-5) mol/l and 3x10(-4) mol/l) concentration-dependently increased early distal tubular flow rate and sodiu

Trichothiodystrophy: quantification of cysteine in human hair and nails by application of sodium azide-dependent oxidation to cysteic acid.

The term "trichothiodystrophy" (TTD) covers several autosomal recessive diseases whose diagnostic hallmark is short, brittle hair low in sulfur and cystine because of impaired synthesis of high-sulfur matrix protein. Clinical symptoms associated with TTD represent a variable range of abnormalities in organs derived from ectoderm and neuroectoderm. Important laboratory tests of the hair for the diagnosis of TTD comprise polarizing microscopy ("tiger-tail" pattern), electron microscopy, and amino acids analysis of hydrolyzed hair with a special focus on cystine. However, only very few institutio

Synthesis of 2,1-Benzoisoxazole-Containing 1,2,3-Triazoles through Copper-Catalyzed Three-Component Domino Reactions of o-Bromoacetophenones, Aldehydes, and Sodium Azide.

We herein describe an efficient copper-catalyzed three-component domino protocol used to prepare 2,1-benzoisoxazole-containing 1,2,3-triazoles from commercially available o-bromoacetophenones, aldehydes, and sodium azide. This domino process involves Aldol condensation, copper-catalyzed azide-chalcone oxidative cyclization, 1,2,3-triazole-assisted azidation, and denitrogenative cyclization sequences. The formed compounds could be considered as benzo[c]isoxazole-functionalized combretastatin A-4 triazole analogues, which might be potential applications in the discovery of a new anticarcinogen.

Chromatographic profiling of morin from in vitro raised mulberry leaves (Morus alba L. var. ichinose) treated with ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) and sodium azide (NaN3).

Mulberry (Morus spp.) foliage constitutes the chief food for the silkworm, Bombyx mori L. and thus has importance in silk industry. In Mulberry leaf, morin is one of the principal constituents present. The current study was undertaken to optimise an analytical RP-HPLC method for the separation and quantification of morin from mulberry leaf treated with ethyl methane sulphonate and sodium azide. The mobile phase water and methanol (80:20), flow rate of 0.9 ml/min and the column temperature of 30 °C were found to be ideal conditions based on resolution and symmetry.
