Bicarbonate secretion in vivo by rat distal tubules during alkalosis induced by dietary chloride restriction and alkali loading.

To examine in vivo the separate effects on distal tubule JtCO2, of dietary chloride restriction, bicarbonate loading, and changes in luminal chloride concentration, we microperfused distal tubules at a physiologic flow rate (8 nl/min) with solutions containing either 45 or 0 mM chloride (after gluconate substitution). Rats were fed a diet containing zero, minimal, or normal amounts of chloride, while drinking either water or a solution of 0.15 M sodium bicarbonate. Neither extracellular fluid volume contraction nor negative chloride balance ensued. Analysis of covariance with repeated measures

Salt and Water: A Review of Hypernatremia.

Serum sodium disorders are generally a marker of water balance in the body. Thus, hypernatremia is most often caused by an overall deficit of total body water. Other unique circumstances may lead to excess salt, without an impact on the body's total water volume. Hypernatremia is commonly acquired in both the hospital and community. As hypernatremia is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, treatment should be initiated promptly. In this review, we will discuss the pathophysiology and management of the main types of hypernatremia, which can be categorized as either a loss of water

Effect of adrenalectomy on the renal response to chloride depletion in the rat.

These experiments were aimed at investigating renal behavior towards chloride, as distinct from sodium, during dietary deprivation of these ions in adrenalectomized rats. Adrenalectomized and shamoperated control rats were maintained on saline for 3 wk, then chloride conservation during a very low chloride intake was assessed both with an abundant sodium intake (as buffered sodium phosphate in the drinking water) and after subsequent withdrawal of sodium. When sodium intake was high, there was no difference in chloride conservation between adrenalectomized and control animals, and sodium balan

Salt-sensitive (Rapp) rats from Envigo spontaneously develop accelerated hypertension independent of ovariectomy on a low-sodium diet.

Inbred salt-sensitive (SS) rats developed by John Rapp and distributed by Harlan (SS/JrHsd) were shown to model ovariectomy-induced hypertension because on a low-sodium (LS) diet, ovariectomized SS (SS-OVX) animals became hypertensive in contrast to their sham-operated (SS-SHAM) normotensive littermates. After Harlan merged with Envigo in 2015, inconsistencies in the LS normotensive phenotype were reported. To further investigate these inconsistencies, we studied the effects of ovariectomy on SS and salt-resistant (SR) rats purchased from Envigo (SS/JrHsd/Env) between 2015 and 2017. The mean a

Potassium-Enriched Salt Substitutes as a Means to Lower Blood Pressure: Benefits and Risks.

Use of salt substitutes containing potassium chloride is a potential strategy to reduce sodium intake, increase potassium intake, and thereby lower blood pressure and prevent the adverse consequences of high blood pressure. In this review, we describe the rationale for using potassium-enriched salt substitutes, summarize current evidence on the benefits and risks of potassium-enriched salt substitutes and discuss the implications of using potassium-enriched salt substitutes as a strategy to lower blood pressure. A benefit of salt substitutes that contain potassium chloride is the expected redu

Sodium reduction is the key ingredient in dietary treatment of hypertension - a randomized controlled trial on sodium, potassium and nitrate.

Dietary interventions are recommended as part of hypertension (HTN) treatment. Sodium reduction has proven effective, however supplements of potassium and/or nitrate are likely also of importance. We aimed to test how these three dietary components affect blood pressure (BP) individually and in combination in patients with HTN. A double-blind randomized controlled trial of 90 participants with HTN was conducted. Participants were randomized to eight groups receiving a hand-out diet and different combinations of supplementation of sodium chloride (130 mmol/day), potassium chloride (40 mmol/day)

Mineral utilization by the lactating cow--chlorine.

Although used as a condiment and essential supplement since pre-Biblical times, chlorine as a part of the molecule salt has received little research effort by large animal nutritionists. Its low cost and the continued popularity of salt as a condiment and sodium supplement has precluded the appearance of chloride deficiencies. There is great variation in the chloride and sodium content of feedstuffs fed to lactating cows so that some formulations require no supplemental chloride or sodium. Chloride is highly available from feedstuffs, and when dietary chloride is low, the cow can reduce sharpl

Availability, Formulation, Labeling, and Price of Low-sodium Salt Worldwide: Environmental Scan.

BACKGROUND: Regular salt is about 100% sodium chloride. Low-sodium salts have reduced sodium chloride content, most commonly through substitution with potassium chloride. Low-sodium salts have a potential role in reducing the population's sodium intake levels and blood pressure, but their availability in the global market is unknown. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess the availability, formulation, labeling, and price of low-sodium salts currently available to consumers worldwide. METHODS: Low-sodium salts were identified through a systematic literature review, Google search, onli

Menu provision in a young offenders institution, comparison with dietary guidelines, and previous menu allocation: a cross-sectional nutritional analysis.

Objective: This study aimed to assess and comparatively analyse two menus from a Young Offenders Institution (YOI). One menu from 2019, and one from 2022, with the objective of identifying any improvements in meeting dietary guidelines. Design: Cross-sectional and comparative analysis. Setting: United Kingdom, a YOI in Northern England. Participants: YOI Menus. Results: Analysis of 30 dietary components identified that 25 exceeded the dietary guidelines (P < 0.05) for the 2022 menu, with five failing to meet the guidelines (P < 0.05). When compared to the 2019 menu, the 2022 menu showed improv

Mechanism of salt effect on flavor formation in lightly-salted large yellow croaker by integrated multiple intelligent sensory and untargeted lipidomics analyses.

Salt has a great influence on food flavor formation. In this study, electronic tongue and nose, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and lipid oxidation levels were used to investigate the influence of different NaCl concentrations on the flavor formation of lightly salted large yellow croaker. The results showed that salt improves the sensory characteristics of the product. Hexanal, 2,5-octanedione, octanal, 1-octen-3-ol, nonanal, and heptanal were key flavor compounds. Phospholipids containing 18-carbon fatty acids are major flavor precursor substanc

Phase diagrams of PEG1000,1500,2000,4000,6000 + lithium citrate + water ATPSs, and the partitioning of salbutamol at T = 298.15 K.

Salbutamol is a drug used to treat the pulmonary diseases by ameliorate the medium and large airways in the lungs. Partitioning of salbutamol drug on the aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) of PEG1000,1500,2000,4000,6000 + trilithium citrate + water was determined at T = 298.15 K. The effect of molecular mass of polymer (MMP) on the binodal and tie-line compositions were studied. Results showed that the biphasic area was extended as the MMP was increased. The salting-out ability were quantified using the Setschenow model, and the binodal curves were modeled by a nonlinear 3-parameter equation. F

Divergent effects of dietary chloride restriction on aldosterone biosynthesis and the renin-angiotensin system in rats.

The effects of dietary chloride restriction - alone or combined with sodium and potassium restriction - on aldosterone biosynthesis and the renin-angiotensin system were studied in rats. Treatment with a chloride-deficient diet led to a temporary decrease in the capsular adrenal conversions of corticosterone to 18-hydroxycorticosterone and aldosterone (manifest after 2 weeks but not longer apparent after 3 weeks), which was accompanied by a progressive rise in plasma renin activity and a moderate fall in plasma potassium. Combined restriction of sodium, potassium and chloride elicited a decrea

Potential Novel Benefits of Sodium Restriction in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic kidney disease is a global public health issue, and it has been considered as the epidemic of the 21st century. Therefore, all initiatives addressed to slow down the evolution and complications of this condition should be well received. While the effects of salt reduction on cardiovascular disease have some controversial issues, in chronic kidney disease, such a policy is beneficial in multiple aspects. In chronic kidney disease patients, dietary sodium restriction is regularly recommended to control extracellular fluid expansion, hypertension and cardiovascular risk. Instead, the effe

On the mechanism by which chloride corrects metabolic alkalosis in man.

To determine whether administration of chloride corrects chloride-depletion metabolic alkalosis (CDA) by correction of plasma volume contraction and restoration of glomerular filtration rate or by an independent effect of chloride repletion, CDA was produced in normal men by the administration of furosemide and maintained by restriction of dietary sodium chloride intake. Negative sodium balance (-112 +/- 16 meq) and reduced plasma volume (2.53 versus 2.93 liters, p less than 0.05) developed. The cumulative chloride deficit of 271 +/- 16 meq was then repleted by oral potassium chloride (267 +/-

Bioavailability of Magnesium and Potassium Salts Used as Potential Substitutes for Sodium Chloride in Human Nutrition - A Review.

Hypertension represents a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. As a diet high in sodium chloride is associated with hypertension, so-called "blood pressure salts" are attracting increasing scientific interest. These are characterized by a partial replacement of sodium chloride by other salts, mainly potassium and magnesium compounds. The aim of this review is to evaluate the bioavailability of potassium and magnesium salts as dietary supplements and to identify potential sodium chloride substitutes. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed database using the PICO scheme. Rando
