Abrupt versus gradual application of pesticides: effects on soil bacterial and fungal communities.

Pesticides are a major anthropogenic input to the environment and a factor in global change that puts pressure on soil microbial communities. However, the effects of different rates of pesticide application on soils remain poorly understood. This study investigates how abrupt versus gradual pesticide applications influence soil bacterial and fungal communities. Employing high-throughput sequencing, we examined the microbial diversity and community composition in response to ten commonly used pesticides. Bacterial communities exhibited minimal changes across treatments, whereas fungal communiti

Meta-analysis of heavy metal effects on soil enzyme activities.

Enzyme activities (EAs) respond to contamination in several ways depending on the chemical form and content of heavy metals and metalloids (HMs) and their interactions with various soil properties. A systematic and mechanistic understanding of EA responses to HM contamination in soil is necessary for predicting the consequences for nutrient availability and the cycling of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S). In this study, a meta-analysis based on 671 observations found the activities of seven enzymes to decrease in response to soil contamination with Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu and As

Isolating, screening and applying chromium reducing bacteria to promote growth and yield of okra (Hibiscus esculentus L.) in chromium contaminated soils.

Hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)], extensively used in different industries, is one of the most toxic heavy metals. The Cr (VI) reducing bacteria could be helpful in decreasing its toxic effects. The present study was conducted to evaluate the potential of Cr (VI) reducing bacteria to improve growth and yield of okra (Hibiscus esculentus L.) in Cr-contaminated soils. Most of the selected bacterial isolates significantly increased the growth and yield of okra. Maximum response was observed in the plants inoculated with the isolate K12 where plant height, root length, fruit weight and number of frui

Combined Residues of Frequently Detected Herbicides are Stronger Predictors of Soil Resistome and Virulence Potential than Single Residues.

Overuse of herbicides has resulted in a global epidemic of evolved resistance in soil ecosystems. While single herbicide risk has been documented, the impact of multiple herbicide residues on the soil resistomes remains poorly understood. Our study quantified the residues of 24 herbicides, profiled antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factor genes (VFGs), and reconstructed 1086 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from 93 agricultural soils across China. The analytical results demonstrate that the frequently detected herbicide residues (e.g., 60-90% detection frequency) are stronger

Soil microbiome perturbation impedes growth of Bouteloua curtipendula and increases relative abundance of soil microbial pathogens.

Bouteloua curtipendula (sideoats grama) is a valuable prairie grass for livestock forage, supporting food webs of herbivorous insects, reducing soil erosion, and limiting weed infiltration in urban grasslands. Efficient establishment of B. curtipendula in prairie restorations and urban plantings could drastically improve long-term functionality of the space. Soil microbial communities have been linked to plant germination, growth, and drought tolerance in many plant species, however little is known about the factors contributing to B. curtipendula germination and early growth. In this study, w

Industrial composting of sewage sludge mitigates antimicrobial resistance risks and preserves bacterial dynamics in tropical soils.

Industrial-scale thermophilic composting of sewage sludge (SS) offers a promising strategy to reduce antimicrobial resistance risks in agricultural soils, although the impacts of its application on soils remain unclear. This study evaluated the impact of SS compost, produced thermophilically with and without lime, on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) related to fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and bacterial communities in tropical clay and sandy loam soils over 100 days, using high-throughput qPCR and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Effect of plant-derived microbial soil legacy in a grafting system-a turn for the better.

BACKGROUND: Plant-soil feedback arises from microbial legacies left by plants in the soil. Grafting is a common technique used to prevent yield declines in monocultures. Yet, our understanding of how grafting alters the composition of soil microbiota and how these changes affect subsequent crop performance remains limited. Our experiment involved monoculturing ungrafted and grafted watermelons to obtain conditioned soils, followed by growing the watermelons on the conditioned soils to investigate plant-soil feedback effects. RESULTS: Ungrafted plants grew better in soil previously conditioned

Climate warming, but not Spartina alterniflora invasion, enhances wetland soil HONO and NOx emissions.

Climate warming and invasive plant growth (plant invasion) may aggravate air pollution by affecting soil nitrogen (N) cycling and the emissions of reactive N gases, such as nitrous acid (HONO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). However, little is known about the response of soil NOy (HONO + NOx) emissions and microbial functional genes to the interaction of climate warming and plant invasion. Here, we found that experimental warming (approximately 1.5 °C), but not Spartina alterniflora invasion, increased NOy emissions (0-140 ng N m-2 s-1) of treated wetland soils by 4-10 fold. Warming also decreased

Inoculum handling alters the strength and direction of plant-microbe interactions.

The pooling of soil samples in plant-microbe interaction studies is commonly employed, but the impact of sample handling has rarely been explored experimentally. Concerns have been raised that sample pooling may reduce biological variation leading to inflated type I errors or may alter the magnitude of microbial effects observed, invalidating the results achieved. To assess the impact of inocula pooling on plant-microbe interactions, we examined the reciprocal influence of unpooled and pooled soil microbial inocula on growth of Solidago altissima and Schizachyrium scoparium, with and without i

Isolation of Bacteria with Potential Plant-Promoting Traits and Optimization of Their Growth Conditions.

This research aimed at investigating the isolation and identification of bacterial strains with biological nitrogen-fixing capability and phosphate, potassium, and zinc solubilization activities from a durum wheat field under two different tillage practices including 10 years of conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) practices. Attempts were also extended to estimate their relative abundances in the soil as well as to develop accurate mathematical models in determining the effect of different temperatures, NaCl concentrations and pH on the growth, and activity of selected isolates. [Effects of broadleaved tree species on soil microbial stoichiometry in clear-cut patches of Cunninghamia lanceolata plantation].

Investigating the response of soil microbial biomass and ecological stoichiometry to tree species transition is of great significance for understanding soil nutrient cycling and availability in forest ecosystems. We measured soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC), nitrogen (MBN), phosphorus (MBP) and their stoichiometry across 0-40 cm soil depth between Mytilaria laosensis and Cunninghamia lanceolata plantations by the chloroform fumigation extraction method, which were replanted after the harvest of C. lanceolata plantation. The results showed that soil MBC in the 0-10 cm layer and soil MBN and

Biotic and abiotic soil properties influence survival of Listeria monocytogenes in soil.

Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen responsible for the potentially fatal disease listeriosis and terrestrial ecosystems have been hypothesized to be its natural reservoir. Therefore, identifying the key edaphic factors that influence its survival in soil is critical. We measured the survival of L. monocytogenes in a set of 100 soil samples belonging to the French Soil Quality Monitoring Network. This soil collection is meant to be representative of the pedology and land use of the whole French territory. The population of L. monocytogenes in inoculated microcosms was enumerated by

Microbial Paradox under Nitrogen Fertilization: Enhanced Soil Phosphorus Mineralization Coupled with Accelerated Stabilization.

pH-neutral soils, where mineral phosphorus (P) fixation is relatively limited and microbial activity is high, provide an ideal system for investigating microbial regulation of P cycling under long-term fertilization. Here, we combined 33P isotope tracing with shotgun metagenomics and microbial network analysis to quantify soil P transformation in a 180-year fertilization experiment. Compared with the unfertilized control, P-only fertilization increased total P, PO43-, and microbial biomass P by 73%, 201%, and 227%, respectively. In contrast, N-only fertilization enhanced phosphatase activity a

[Differentiation characteristics and driving factors of plant-derived and microbial-derived necromass carbon in wetland soils].

Wetland soil organic carbon comprises organic fractions that differ in biological origin, decomposition stage, and stabilization status. The preservation of plant-derived residue carbon and the accumulation of microbial necromass carbon represent two important pathways for SOC formation and stabilization in wetlands. Lignin phenols and amino sugars are commonly used to characterize lignin-derived plant residue components and estimate microbial necromass carbon, respectively. We synthesized the contrasting patterns of these two source-related residue carbon components across different wetland t

Edaphic Gradients Reshape Microbial Microenclaves Assembly within Plastispheres.

Microplastics create unique microbial habitats known as plastispheres, functioning as embedded "micro-enclaves" in soil ecosystems. However, their assembly mechanisms and ecological implications remain poorly understood. Here, we sampled microplastics and adjacent soils at 27 urban wetland sites in Changsha, China, to sequence bacterial communities and assess their assembly processes and environmental drivers. Plastispheres selectively recruit soil bacteria, with bacterial richness representing only 51.6-69.3% of that in adjacent soils despite positive correlations with source communities. Imp

Effects of establishing mixed Eucalyptus plantations on soil phosphorus fractions.

We investigated pure Eucalyptus urophylla × E. grandis plantations (PP) and their mixtures with Erythrophleum fordii (EE), Dalbergia odorifera (ED), Castanopsis hystrix (EC), and Parashorea chinensis (EP), and studied soil phosphorus (P) fractions, soil physicochemical properties, fine-root traits of the dominant E. urophylla × E. grandis, microbial biomass, and extracellular enzyme activities in the 0-20 cm layer, as well as their interrelationships. We analyzed the mechanisms underlying the effects of mixed plantations of E. urophylla × E. grandis on soil P fractions. The results showed that

Viruses help shape microbiome response to polyphenol rewiring of methane-suppressed peat microcosms.

Human activities are accelerating permafrost thaw and subsequent methane emissions from increased microbial activity, prompting microbiome engineering efforts as an emissions mitigation strategy. We recently demonstrated that catechin amendment could drastically reduce methane emissions (>80%) in peat microcosms by enriching catechin-degrading prokaryotes that outcompeted methanogens for hydrogen. However, viral contributions to such microbiome-level responses remain unexplored and we hypothesized that viral dynamics could help shape the microbiome response as nutrient amendments may alter cel

Phosphorus availability and planting patterns regulate soil microbial effects on plant performance in a semiarid steppe.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Growing evidence has suggested that plant responses to model soil microorganisms are context dependent; however, few studies have investigated the effects of whole soil microbial communities on plant performance in different abiotic and biotic conditions. To address this, we examined how soil phosphorus (P) availability and different planting patterns regulate soil microbial effects on the growth of two native plant species in a semiarid steppe. METHODS: We carried out a glasshouse experiment to explore the effects of the whole indigenous soil microbiota on the growth and

Strategies of organic phosphorus recycling by soil bacteria: acquisition, metabolism, and regulation.

Critical to meeting cellular phosphorus (P) demand, soil bacteria deploy a number of strategies to overcome limitation in inorganic P (Pi ) in soils. As a significant contributor to P recycling, soil bacteria secrete extracellular enzymes to degrade organic P (Po ) in soils into the readily bioavailable Pi . In addition, several Po compounds can be transported directly via specific transporters and subsequently enter intracellular metabolic pathways. In this review, we highlight the strategies that soil bacteria employ to recycle Po from the soil environment. We discuss the diversity of extrac
