Immobilization of cadmium in polluted soils by phytogenic iron oxide nanoparticles.

While phytogenic nanomaterials have been successfully used to remove heavy metals in wastewater, the potential to successfully use such materials to immobilize heavy metals in soils is still unclear. In this study, phytogenic iron oxide nanoparticles (PION) were used to immobilize cadmium (Cd) in six soils. Amendment with PION effectively immobilized Cd, with a concomitant increase in the concentrations of iron oxides, soil pH and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) under both oxic and anoxic conditions. However, observed changes in soil properties and Cd fractions were different under oxic and ano

Estimation of pollutant partition in sandy soils with different water contents.

The objectives of this work were: (1) to identify an isotherm model to relate the contaminant contents in the gas phase with those in the solid and non-aqueous liquid phases; (2) to develop a methodology for the estimation of the contaminant distribution in the different phases of the soil; and (3) to evaluate the influence of soil water content on the contaminant distribution in soil. For sandy soils with negligible contents of clay and natural organic matter, contaminated with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, trichloroethylene (TCE), and perchloroethylene (PCE), it was concluded that:

Location-specific ecotoxicological risk assessment of metal-polluted soils.

When chemical analysis indicates metal pollution, a second-tier method is needed to evaluate whether toxic effects occur at the polluted sites. A method based on pollution-induced community tolerance (PICT) was developed using samples taken from locations polluted with sewage more than 20 years ago. Microorganisms extracted from soil samples were exposed to a concentration range of zinc, nickel, copper, chromium (III), or chromium (VI) salts in a buffer suspension. The remaining activity of the intoxicated microorganisms was determined by color formation with 31 different organic substrates in

Profiling of soil bio-composite pollution and driving factors in China.

Soil biological contamination driven by antibiotic resistance poses escalating global health threats, yet national-scale assessments remain scarce. To bridge this knowledge gap, metagenomic analysis of 300 samples spanning five ecosystems (agricultural, bare land, forest, grassland, wetland) was employed to study the diversity, co-occurrence patterns, and driving factors of the soil resistome and pathogens across China. Our analyses revealed that antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were ubiquitously detected (23 types; 0.03-2.6 copies/cell), with multidrug (mexF, mexW), vancomycin (vanR/S), and

Electrokinetic remediation of antibiotic-polluted soil with different concentrations of tetracyclines.

This study investigated the efficacy of electrokinetic remediation of soils polluted with different concentrations of tetracyclines (TCs). Three widely used TCs (oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, and tetracycline) were selected, and concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 20, and 50 mg/kg (C0, C5, C10, C20, C50) were selected for comparison. Antibiotic-polluted soils with no electric field served as controls. The average removal rates of TCs in different treatments ranged from 25 to 48% after 7-day remediation. The contributing ratios of electrokinetics to TCs removal varied from 22 to 84%. The concentr

Enrichment of marsh soils with heavy metals by effect of anthropic pollution.

The impact of waste disposal on marsh soils was assessed in topsoil samples collected at eight randomly selected points in the salt marsh in Ramallosa (Pontevedra, Spain) at 4-month intervals for 2 years. Polluted soil samples were characterized in physico-chemical terms and their heavy metal contents determined by comparison with control, unpolluted samples. The results revealed a marked effect of waste discharges on the soils in the area, which have low contents in heavy metals under normal environmental conditions. In fact, the studied soils were found to contain substantial amounts of tota

[Hygienic evaluation of soil pollution in a South Ural agroindustrial region].

The results of soil monitoring the Orenburg Region (from 2003 to 2007) were comparatively analyzed. The structure of soil pollution with gross (vanadium, lead, nickel, chromium, cobalt, manganese, copper, zinc, tin, titanium, boron, molybdenum) and mobile (cobalt, manganese, copper, zinc, chromium, nickel) compounds was revealed. The Orenburg Region's soils experience an anthropogenic load, as evidenced by a two-fold soil clarke excess as described by A. P. Vinogradov. The highest soil pollution has been established in the eastern region that is most industrially developed. The presumable asso

Removal of organic pollutants and heavy metals in soils by electrokinetic remediation.

In this work, the feasibility of electrokinetic remediation for the restoration of polluted soil with organic and inorganic compounds had been development and evaluated using a model soil sample. The model soil was prepared with kaolinite clay artificially polluted in the laboratory with chromium and an azo dye: Reactive Black 5 (RB5). The electromigration of Cr in a spiked kaolinite sample was studied in alkaline conditions. Despite of the high pH registered in the kaolinite sample (around pH 9.5), Cr migrated towards the cathode and it was accumulated in the cathode chamber forming a white p

Temperature and soil pollution affect dissolved and colloidal antimony release from flooded shooting range soils.

Antimony (Sb) mobility in soils, whether dissolved or colloidal, is an emerging concern, yet its geochemical behavior, particularly under future climatic conditions, remains poorly understood. In a 28-day microcosm experiment, we investigated Sb release from two shooting range soils under flooded conditions at 20°C and 25°C. Sequential extractions and pore water analyses were conducted to assess Sb release at different temperatures. Sb size distribution was examined across pore water filtrates and characterized using asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4). The soils had different level

Siderophore-producing bacteria from Spitsbergen soils-novel agents assisted in bioremediation of the metal-polluted soils.

Siderophores are molecules that exhibit a high specificity for iron (Fe), and their synthesis is induced by a deficiency of bioavailable Fe. Complexes of Fe-siderophore are formed extracellularly and diffuse through porins across membranes into bacterial cells. Siderophores can bind heavy metals facilitating their influx into cells via the same mechanism. The aim of the studies was to determine the ability of siderophore-producing bacteria isolated from soils in the north-west part of Wedel Jarlsberg Land (Spitsbergen) to chelate non-Fe metals (Al, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Mn, Sn, and Zn). Specially mo

Biological permeable reactive barriers coupled with electrokinetic soil flushing for the treatment of diesel-polluted clay soil.

Removal of diesel from spiked kaolin has been studied in the laboratory using coupled electrokinetic soil flushing (EKSF) and bioremediation through an innovative biological permeable reactive barriers (Bio-PRBs) positioned between electrode wells. The results show that this technology is efficient in the removal of pollutants and allows the soil to maintain the appropriate conditions for microorganism growth in terms of pH, temperature, and nutrients. At the same time, EKSF was demonstrated to be a very interesting technology for transporting pollutants, microorganisms and nutrients, although

Semi-empirical approach to modeling of soil flushing: model development, application to soil polluted by zinc and copper.

This paper describes a semi-empirical approach to modeling the soil flushing technology. A new mathematical model aimed at predicting the course of the continuous soil flushing process by use of the input data obtained from simple batch laboratory experiments is described in the theoretical part. An objective of the study is to apply this new model to soil polluted by zinc and copper (11949 mg kg(-1) and 1895 mg kg(-1), respectively) by flushing the soil with an ammonia nitrogen solution. A set of batch experiments provided both equilibrium and kinetic data characterizing the leaching ability

Analysis and fate of 14 relevant wastewater-derived organic pollutants in long-term exposed soil.

The growing use of reclaimed water in agriculture worldwide calls for developing high-sensitivity methods to quantify wastewater-derived organic contaminants in soils so that the potential risk of this irrigation practice can be properly assessed. This work describes an analytical method for the determination of trace levels of 14 drugs that are known to be poorly removed during conventional wastewater treatment in soil. The analytes selected for investigation included ten pharmaceuticals from different therapeutic classes (carbamazepine, diclofenac, cis-diltiazem, lamotrigine, methadone, mida

One-at-a-time sensitivity analysis of pollutant loadings to subsurface properties for the assessment of soil and groundwater pollution potential.

Chemical leak was numerically simulated for four chemical substances: benzene (light non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL)), tetrachloroethylene (dense NAPL), phenol (soluble in water), and pentachlorophenol (white crystalline solid) in a hypothetical subsurface leak situation using a multiphase compositional transport model. One metric ton of chemical substances was assumed to leak at a point 3.51 m above the water table in a homogeneous unconfined aquifer which had the depth to water table of 7.135 m, the hydraulic gradient of 0.00097, the recharge rate of 0.7 mm/day, and the permeability of 2.92

Effects of Nonantibiotic Organic Pollutants on Soil Resistance and Element Cycling Functions in Greenhouse Soils: A Nationwide Survey in China.

Greenhouse farming expansion worsens soil antimicrobial resistance. Environmental impacts of antibiotics are well-documented, yet nonantibiotic organic pollutants (NAOPs) remain vastly understudied. A nationwide soil comparison examined four common NAOP effects on elemental cycling genes (ECGs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in paired greenhouse and open-field samples. Greenhouse soils held far richer nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling genes and markedly higher ARG loads. Their microbiome featured more complex, tightly synergistic ecological interaction networks. Structural equat

Relationships between leaching of methylmercury from the soil and the basic characteristics of alkali soil polluted by mercury in Guizhou China.

To determine the relationship between soluble methylmercury and soil characteristics which was contaminated by mercury, several experiments were conducted. As a result, a good correlation was founding between the leached methylmercury level from soil and the EC (electronic conductivity) level of soil. Moreover, to grasp the relationship between soluble methylmercury and soluble anions from soil, several anions (Cl(-), NO(3-), SO(4) (2-)) were measured using the ion chromatography method. Although the correlation coefficient was small (r = 0.40), only a correlation between the level of SO(4) (2
