Organophosphorus mineralizing-Streptomyces species underpins uranate immobilization and phosphorus availability in uranium tailings.

Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) are important but often overlooked regulators of uranium (U) cycling in soil. However, the impact of PSB on uranate fixation coupled with the decomposition of recalcitrant phosphorus (P) in mining land remains poorly understood. Here, we combined gene amplicon sequencing, metagenome and metatranscriptome sequencing analysis and strain isolation to explore the effects of PSB on the stabilization of uranate and P availability in U mining areas. We found that the content of available phosphorus (AP), carbonate-U and Fe-Mn-U oxides in tailings was significantl

Natural Radiation in the Rocks, Soils, and Groundwater of Southern Florida with a Discussion on Potential Health Impacts.

Southern Florida is underlain by rocks and sediments that naturally contain radioactive isotopes. The primary origin of the radioactive isotopes is Miocene-aged phosphate deposits that can be enriched in uranium-238 and its daughter isotopes. Nodular phosphate containing radionuclides from the Miocene has been reworked into younger formations and is ubiquitous in southern Florida. When the nodular phosphate is exposed to groundwater with geochemical conditions favorable for its dissolution, uranium, radium, and radon may be released into the groundwater system. Uranium concentrations have been

Soil-to-rice transfer parameters for naturally occurring radionuclides and trace elements in Thai paddy fields: A national dataset.

The reliability of transfer parameters in radiological assessment is essential for estimating the food chain transfer of radionuclides, which commonly uses the concentration ratio (CRplant-soil) as a key parameter in evaluating ingestion dose exposure to humans. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food consumed by half of the world's population, and it plays a particularly significant role in Thailand's diet and economy. The CRrice-soil dataset reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) shows high variability across different environments (temperate and tropical), with a notable

Turnover of 137Cs in 'soil-tree' system: An experience of measuring the isotope flows in a Siberian conifer forest.

Little attention has been paid to the uptake of 137Cs in natural forests under low levels of the isotope fallout when no immediate ecological danger presents. Here we present the extended assessments of the soil-to-plant and canopy-to-litter flows of 137Cs recently evaluated in a native Siberian forested area. The area undergoes a typical after-fire long term succession, with light-conifer upper story being followed by undergrowth of Siberian fir and other dark-conifer species. The one-year-old needles of Siberian fir were found to accumulate the largest concentration of the isotope, 4.10 Bq/k

Vertical distribution, migration rates, and model comparison of actinium in a semi-arid environment.

Vertical soil characterization and migration of radionuclides were investigated at four radioactively contaminated sites on Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB), New Mexico to determine the vertical downward migration of radionuclides in a semi-arid environment. The surface soils (0-15 cm) were intentionally contaminated with Brazilian sludge (containing (232)Thorium and other radionuclides) approximately 40 years ago, in order to simulate the conditions resulting from a nuclear weapons accident. Site grading consisted of manually raking or machine disking the sludge. The majority of the radioactivi

Environmental impact of CO2, Rn, Hg degassing from the rupture zones produced by Wenchuan M s 8.0 earthquake in western Sichuan, China.

The concentrations and flux of CO2, (222)Radon (Rn), and gaseous elemental mercury (Hg) in soil gas were investigated based on the field measurements in June 2010 at ten sites along the seismic rupture zones produced by the May 12, 2008, Wenchuan M s 8.0 earthquake in order to assess the environmental impact of degassing of CO2, Rn and Hg. Soil gas concentrations of 344 sampling points were obtained. Seventy measurements of CO2, Rn and Hg flux by the static accumulation chamber method were performed. The results of risk assessment of CO2, Rn and Hg concentration in soil gas showed that (1) the

Radiological evaluation of the transuranic remaining contamination in Palomares (Spain): A historical review.

This paper shows the studies carried out in Palomares (Almería, Spain) following the ground dispersion of nuclear material as a result of the air crash accident that took place in 1966, in which four nuclear bombs were involved. As a consequence of the Palomares accident, plutonium (Pu) and uranium (U) were dispersed over an area of approximately 2.3 km2 due to the chemical explosion of two of them. The most relevant activities carried out by CIEMAT, along with other national and international institutions in the Palomares scenario are detailed. These activities, performed for over 50 years, f

Speciation of radiocesium and radioiodine in aerosols from Tsukuba after the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Aerosol samples were collected from Tsukuba, Japan, soon after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident and analyzed for speciation of radiocesium and radioiodine to explore their chemical behavior and isotopic ratios after the release. Most (134)Cs and (137)Cs were bound in organic matter (53–91%) and some in water-soluble fractions (5–15%), whereas a negligible proportion of radiocesium remained in minerals. This pattern suggests that sulfate salts and organic matter may be the main carrier of Cs-bearing particles. The (129)I in aerosol samples is contained in various proportions as soluble inorg

Natural radionuclides in atmospheric deposition and their responses to sandstorm events: A case study in Lanzhou.

The use of naturally occurring radionuclides as tracers in Earth science provides valuable insights into atmospheric processes and environmental dynamics. In this study, we conducted a one-year observation (September 2022-September 2023) of atmospheric deposition fluxes of natural radionuclides (including 7Be, 210Pb, 40K, 226Ra, 228Ra, and 228Th) in Lanzhou, Northwest China, in order to investigate their seasonal variations, controlling mechanisms, and potential applications in tracer studies. At the same time, the natural radionuclide activity ratios on fine soil particles (<75 μm) of the Nor

High (36)Cl/Cl ratios in Chernobyl groundwater.

After the explosion of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in April 1986, contaminated material was buried in shallow trenches within the exclusion zone. A (90)Sr plume was evidenced downgradient of one of these trenches, trench T22. Due to its conservative properties, (36)Cl is investigated here as a potential tracer to determine the maximal extent of the contamination plume from the trench in groundwater. (36)Cl/Cl ratios measured in groundwater, trench soil water and leaf leachates are 1-5 orders of magnitude higher than the theoretical natural (36)Cl/Cl ratio. This contamination occurred aft

Development of a new tool to simultaneously measure soil-gas permeability and CO 2 concentration as important parameters for geogenic radon potential assessment.

This study assessed the geogenic radon potential using PECAME, an innovative tool designed to simultaneously measure soil-gas permeability and CO 2 concentration - two key parameters for understanding radon transport in soil. Comparative field studies using the RADON-JOK device in various geological settings in Japan and Poland demonstrate the effectiveness of PECAME. These studies reveal a strong correlation between PECAME and RADON-JOK, with an R 2 value of 0.94 for flow rate of 3.5 dm 3 min - 1 . Since the soil-gas Rn concentration and permeability were measured simultaneously,

Enhancement of natural radioactivity in fertilized soil of Faisalabad, Pakistan.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND, GOAL, AND SCOPE: Natural radioactivity in phosphate rock (PR) is transferred to phosphate fertilizer (PF) during the manufacturing process of the PF. The continuous addition of the PF to the cultivated soil accumulates the radionuclides in the land and increases the level of radioactivity in the soil. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the enhanced level of accumulated radioactivity due to the continuous addition of the PF in the farmlands of Nuclear Institute of Agriculture and Biology (NIAB) at Faisalabad in Pakistan. The selected study area consisted

Natural radioactivity in mineral phosphate fertilizers and its impacts on human health: an overview.

Humans are constantly exposed to radioactivity present in rocks, soils, and water, mainly from materials in the Earth's crust that contain chemical elements belonging to the radioactive series of uranium and thorium. An important anthropogenic source of these natural radioisotopes to the environment is fertilizers, widely used to increase agricultural productivity. Exposure to ionizing radiation can become a public health problem worldwide, since it is related to the development of different cancers in humans. The present study aimed to survey research on the radioactive content in different t

Retention of potentially mobile radiocesium in forest surface soils affected by the Fukushima nuclear accident.

The fate of (137)Cs derived from the Fukushima nuclear accident fallout and associated radiological hazards are largely dependent on its mobility in the surface soils of forest ecosystems. Thus, we quantified microbial and adsorptive retentions of (137)Cs in forest surface (0-3 cm) soils. The K(2)SO(4) extraction process liberated 2.1%-12.8% of the total (137)Cs from the soils. Two soils with a higher content of clay- and silt-sized particles, organic carbon content, and cation exchange capacity showed higher (137)Cs extractability. Microbial biomass was observed in all of the soils. However,

Geochemical characterization of uranium mill tailings (Bois Noirs Limouzat, France) highlighting the U and 226Ra retention.

As with other metals, the management of tailings from former uranium (U) mines requires a good knowledge of the geochemical mechanisms governing the retention of radioelements of interest: U and 226Ra. This article presents the results of the study of the bearing phases featuring these two radioelements within the Bois Noirs Limouzat tailings storage facility (Loire), the only site in France where the tailings (a sandy silt facies and a clayey silt facies) are currently stored only under water. The aim is to gain a better understanding of their respective mobility under current storage conditi

Natural radioactivity in soil and concomitant hazards in the BSCIC Industrial Area, Jhenaidah, Bangladesh: a pioneering study.

Soil serves as both a repository and a pathway for natural radioactivity, influencing human exposure through the transfer of radionuclides into the food-chain and atmosphere. Industrial activities can further disrupt this distribution by introducing contaminants, potentially leading to environmental accumulation. This pioneering study investigates the activity concentrations of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) and assesses radiological hazards in soil from the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Industrial Area in Jhenaidah, Bangladesh. Thirty soil samp

Soil availability, plant uptake and soil to plant transfer of 99Tc--a review.

The fission yield of 99Tc from 239Pu and 235U is similar to that of 137Cs or 90Sr and it is therefore an important component of nuclear weapons fall-out, nuclear waste and releases from nuclear facilities. There is particular current interest in 99Tc transfer from soil to plants for: (a) environmental impact assessments for terrestrial nuclear waste repositories, and (b) assessments of the potential for phytoextraction of radionuclides from contaminated effluent and soil. Vascular plants have a high 99Tc uptake capacity, a strong tendency to transport it to shoot material and accumulate it in
