Work on elucidating the mechanisms of plasticity in somatosensory maps continues apace. Recent work has focused on both the nature of the thalamocortical interactions that determine plasticity, and on the differences between plasticity induced by nerve block or damage versus that induced by experience. Recordings from awake behaving animals have thrown light on the thalamocortical circuit mechanisms that underlie map plasticity; meanwhile, intracellular recordings from cortical slices have thrown light on the precise synaptic mechanisms underlying plasticity.

The interhemispheric connections of somatosensory cortex in the gray-headed flying fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) were examined. Injections of anatomical tracers were placed into five electrophysiologically identified somatosensory areas: the primary somatosensory area (SI or area 3b), the anterior parietal areas 3a and 1/2, and the lateral somatosensory areas SII (the secondary somatosensory area) and PV (pairetal ventral area). In two animals, the hemisphere opposite to that containing the injection sites was explored electrophysiologically to allow the details of the topography of interconnec

Neurons, even in the earliest sensory areas of cortex, are subject to a great deal of contextual influence from both within and across modality connections. In the present work, we investigated whether the earliest regions of somatosensory cortex (S1 and S2) would contain content-specific information about visual object categories. We reasoned that this might be possible due to the associations formed through experience that link different sensory aspects of a given object. Participants were presented with visual images of different object categories in 2 fMRI experiments. Multivariate pattern

According to the predictive coding theory, the brain predicts future sensory inputs based on previous experiences. When there is a mismatch between the expected and the actual stimulus, a mismatch response is transmitted from low to high cortical levels to adapt the predictive model. An important cortical area for somatosensory mismatch responses is the secondary somatosensory (S2) cortex, which has reciprocal connections with the cerebellum. This study aims to characterize the role of the cortico-cerebellar interactions in the modulation of S2 cortex responses according to the predictability

Dexterous manual movements require accurate sensorimotor integration; however, understanding how the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) dynamically processes incoming afferent information during such tasks remains limited. Using magnetoencephalography, we investigated somatosensory evoked magnetic fields during two types of finger movement, varying in speed and force exertion. We focused on three SI components-M20, M30, and M38-occurring within 20 to 40 ms post-stimulation. Across all movement conditions, the M20 and M30 amplitudes were significantly reduced when compared with the stationary co

Sensory processing is fundamentally shaped by stimulation history. For example, in visual cortex, neural responses are reduced for repeated or sustained stimuli (adaptation). These phenomena are well characterized and effectively modeled by divisive normalization. We asked whether these same computational principles govern somatosensory processing. We used fMRI (6 participants, all female) and intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG, 2 participants, both male) to measure responses to time-varying vibrotactile stimuli in human somatosensory cortex. Stimuli consisted of single- and paired-puls

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuro-modulation technique that delivers current through the scalp by a pair of patch electrodes (2-Patch). This study proposes a new multi-channel tDCS (mc-tDCS) optimization method, the distributed constrained maximum intensity (D-CMI) approach. For targeting the P20/N20 somatosensory source at Brodmann area 3b, an integrated combined magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) source analysis is used with individualized skull conductivity calibrated realistic head modeling.

Focal ischemic injury to the primary motor cortex (M1) disrupts distributed sensorimotor networks and initiates structural remodeling in spared cortical regions. Although previous studies have demonstrated axonal sprouting from ventral premotor cortex (PMv) to somatosensory area 1/2 at later post-injury time points, the onset of this reorganization remains unknown. We examined whether PMv-to-area 1/2 structural remodeling is detectable four weeks after focal infarction of the M1 distal forelimb representation in adult squirrel monkeys. Animals received focal ischemic lesions of the M1 distal f

Effective connectivity, functional connectivity, and tractography were measured between 57 cortical frontal and somatosensory regions and the 360 cortical regions in the Human Connectome Project (HCP) multimodal parcellation atlas for 171 HCP participants. A ventral somatosensory stream connects from 3b and 3a via 1 and 2 and then via opercular and frontal opercular regions to the insula, which then connects to inferior parietal PF regions. This stream is implicated in "what"-related somatosensory processing of objects and of the body and in combining with visual inputs in PF. A dorsal "action

This study tests for a function of the somatosensory cortex, that, in addition to its role in processing somatic afferent information, somatosensory cortex contributes both to motor learning and the stabilization of motor memory. Continuous theta-burst magnetic stimulation (cTBS) was applied, before force-field training to disrupt activity in either the primary somatosensory cortex, primary motor cortex, or a control zone over the occipital lobe. Tests for retention and relearning were conducted after a 24 h delay. Analysis of movement kinematic measures and force-channel trials found that cTB

Microglia are the immune cells of the central nervous system that play important roles in brain pathologies. Microglia also help shape neuronal circuits during development, via phagocytosing weak synapses and regulating neurogenesis. Using in vivo multiphoton imaging of layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons in the developing somatosensory cortex, we demonstrate here that microglial contact with dendrites directly induces filopodia formation. This filopodia formation occurs only around postnatal day 8-10, a period of intense synaptogenesis and when microglia have an activated phenotype. Filopodia formati

Short latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) to stimulation of the tibial nerve at the ankle and at the knee and motor action potentials (MAPs) recorded from the tibial muscle during transcranial stimulation of the motor cortex were recorded in 21 patients with myelopathy. The electrophysiological results were compared with the clinical evolution over 12 months. Both scalp SSEPs and MAPs were absent in 10 patients with clinically 'complete cord transection.' The clinical and electrophysiological data remained unchanged in these patients. Scalp SSEPs were present at the first examinati

Our previous research has demonstrated that the spinal cord undergoes epigenetic and molecular alterations following non-severe burn injury (BI). However, the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), crucial for pain perception, remains unexplored in this context. Here, we investigated transcriptomic alterations in the S1 cortex of mice subjected to BI or formalin application (FA) to the hind paw, utilizing RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) one hour after injury. RNA-seq identified 1116 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in BI and 136 DEGs in formalin-induced inflammatory pain. Notably, 82.4% of DEGs in B

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) in human primary somatosensory cortex (S1) has been used to successfully evoke naturalistic sensations. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the evoked sensations remain unknown. To understand how specific stimulation parameters elicit certain sensations we must first understand the representation of those sensations in the brain. In this study we record from intracortical microelectrode arrays implanted in S1, premotor cortex, and posterior parietal cortex of a male human participant performing a somatosensory imagery task. The sensations

A 86-year-old woman with left hemiparesis was admitted to our hospital. When visiting to our hospital, hemichorea appeared on her left extremities in an ambulance. She also had mild disturbance of consciousness, spatial disorientation, and sensory disturbance. Blood biochemical studies revealed mild renal failure. DWI MRI showed hyperintensities in the postcentral gyrus and a posterior part of the insula in the right hemisphere, but no signal changes in FLAIR. No lesions were detected in the basal ganglia. The DWI-FLAIR mismatch suggested acute cerebral infarction, and we performed intravenous

Functional mapping of the rat somatosensory cortex was performed with T2*-sensitized MRI using a forepaw electrical stimulation model in alpha-chloralose-anesthetized rats at 7 T under both normocapnia and mild hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia. A highly localized activation area, consistent with the known somatosensory cortical region, was detected in all seven animals studied during hypocapnia and in five of the same animals during normocapnia. Quantitatively, hypocapnia was found to significantly increase both the size of the fMRI activation area (3.4 +/- 0.6 mm2 versus 1.5 +/- 0.6 mm2 in

Cortical reorganization occurs within the primary somatosensory and the primary motor cortex after amputation of the arm or forearm. Here we report on a patient showing cortical reorganization after amputation of his right index finger. Our findings indicate that the neural networks within the area of the amputated finger in the somatosensory cortex (SI) were invaded by neighbouring structures, i.e. of neural cell assemblies that subserve the thumb and middle finger of his right hand.

Emerging evidence indicates impairments in somatosensory function may be a major contributor to motor dysfunction associated with neurologic injury or disorders. However, the neuroanatomical substrates underlying the connection between aberrant sensory input and ineffective motor output are still under investigation. The primary somatosensory cortex (S1) plays a critical role in processing afferent somatosensory input and contributes to the integration of sensory and motor signals necessary for skilled movement. Neuroimaging and neurostimulation approaches provide unique opportunities to non-i

OBJECTIVE: To test electrophysiologically, if patients with mitochondriopathy but without evidence of myocloni have subclinical signs of disinhibition in motor and somatosensory cortices.
METHODS: Two patients were studied and compared with age-matched control groups.
RESULTS: In both patients, giant somatosensory evoked potentials after median nerve stimulation and a reduced intracortical inhibition tested by transcranial magnetic stimulation in a paired pulse paradigm indicated a dysfunction of inhibitory circuits in the motor as well as the somatosensory cortex. In addition, the somatosen

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) obtained in response to stimulation of the median nerve, posterior tibial nerve, lips, tongue, palate, and pharynx were recorded in four monkeys (Macaca mulatta) under light barbiturate anesthesia. In agreement with the results of SEP recordings in humans and single-unit recordings in monkeys, there is a medial-to-lateral representation in somatosensory cortex of the hand, lips, and tongue. There is a discontinuity in the representation of the upper mouth: the tongue representation is interposed between a medial region (near the lip representation), usual
