Violent somnambulism: a parasomnia of young men with stereotyped dream-like experiences.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize a subgroup of arousal parasomnias associated with violent behavior in adults. DESIGN: A pilot study on clinical and polysomnographic data of 13 adult patients seen in a tertiary sleep center for the suspicion of arousal parasomnia associated with violence. RESULTS: Nine young patients (8 males 1 female) had a common pattern of abnormalities: similar 'claustrophobic' dream-like experiences and complex, vehement dream enactments; no REM sleep without atonia on polysomnography. We call this syndrome 'violent somnambulism'. The rest of the patients had alcoholic deliri

Olanzapine-Related Somnambulism: A Systematic Review of Literature and a Case Report of Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Somnambulism, or sleepwalking (SW), is one of the most common forms of arousal parasomnias. It is characterized by different complex motor behaviors leading to unwanted movements in bed or walking during sleep. It can be the consequence of psychological stress, abnormal breathing during sleep, high fever, or drug adverse effects. There is evidence of an association between antipsychotic treatment, including olanzapine, and SW. METHODS: We present the case of a patient experiencing treatment-resistant anorexia nervosa whose somnambulism re-exacerbated after the addition of a low do

A review of sleepwalking (somnambulism): the enigma of neurophysiology and polysomnography with differential diagnosis of complex partial seizures.

The goal of this report is to review all aspects of sleepwalking (SW), also known as somnambulism. Various factors seem to initiate SW, especially drugs, stress, and sleep deprivation. As an etiology, heredity is important, but other conditions include thyrotoxicosis, stress, and herpes simplex encephalitis. Psychological characteristics of sleepwalkers often include aggression, anxiety, panic disorder, and hysteria. Polysomnographic characteristics emphasize abnormal deep sleep associated with arousal and slow wave sleep fragmentation. In the differential diagnosis, the EEG is important to pr

[Rare consciousness disturbances in toxicological practice: akinetic mutism, somnambulism, locked-in syndrome, and psychogenic coma].

The toxicity of xenobiotics can result inrare disorders of consciousness, such as akinetic mutism and somnambulism as well as syndromes mimicking consciousness disturbances, such as locked-in syndrome and psychogenic coma. Akinetic mutism is a condition characterized by a lack of spontaneous movements and little or no vocalization. Somnambulism include performing of complex motor activity in an automatic manner during deep sleep, without any awareness of its execution. The locked-in syndrome is a state with quadriplegia coexisting with cranial nerves palsies and mutism, but with fully preserve

Sleep disorders: disorders of arousal? Enuresis, somnambulism, and nightmares occur in confusional states of arousal, not in "dreaming sleep".

In summary, the classical sleep disorders of nocturnal enuresis, somnambulism, the nightmare, and the sleep terror occur preferentially during arousal from slow-wave sleep and are virtually never associated with the rapid-eye-movement dreaming state. Original data are reported here which indicate that physiological differences from normal subjects, of a type predisposing the individual to a particular attack pattern, are present throughout the night. The episode, at least in the case of enuresis, appears to be simply a reinforcement of these differences to a clinically overt level. A number of

[Daytime sleepiness with recurrent nocturnal fall-related injuries: a case report of somnambulism triggered by severe obstructive sleep apnea].

This article reports a 34-year-old man who presented with snoring for more than 1 year, progressive daytime sleepiness for 6 months, and recurrent nocturnal fall-related injuries for 2 weeks. Video-polysomnography (vPSG) captured a typical somnambulism episode during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and confirmed the diagnosis of severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). After continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, somnambulism episodes ceased and sleep architecture normalized. Notably, the result of the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT), which had been positive before treatment,

Self-reported developmental changes in the frequency and characteristics of somnambulistic and sleep terror episodes in chronic sleepwalkers.

BACKGROUND: Far from being benign, somnambulistic episodes can be frequent and/or severe and potentially injurious. Episodes may also be accompanied by sleep mentation with variable degrees of retrograde amnesia. The present study investigated how somnambulistic episodes unfold from childhood through adulthood, a topic that remains understudied. METHODS: Adult sleepwalkers with a diagnosis of primary somnambulism and a childhood onset of the disorder (n = 113) were assessed for changes in frequency of their episodes, recall of episode-related sleep mentation and aggressive episodes during chi

Gender differences in spontaneous adverse event reports associated with zolpidem in South Korea, 2015-2019.

Study objectives: While zolpidem is considered as an example of a gender effect on drug response, there is insufficient evidence to reach a consensus. This study aimed to investigate gender differences in adverse events (AEs) of zolpidem. Methods: We estimated the difference between the reporting odds ratios (RORs) calculated in gender subgroups for the AEs signals detected in data mining using 2015-2019 Korea voluntary adverse drug events reporting system (KAERS) data. Different reporting risk by gender was evaluated by using the log RORs being significantly different by gender at the 5% sign

Sleep self-intoxication and sleep driving as rare zolpidem-induced complex behaviour.

INTRODUCTION: The GABA(A) receptor agonist zolpidem has been used for treatment of insomnia since years, but special side effects have been reported. These side effects were called zolpidem-induced sleep-related complex behaviour. Such complex behaviour is associated with somnambulism and includes sleepwalking, sleep eating, sleep conversation and sleep driving. CASE PRESENTATION: Two cases of zolpidem-induced sleep-related complex behaviour following self-intoxication, sleep driving and amnesia are presented. In both cases, the subjects reported the voluntary intake of only one zolpidem tabl

Disorders of arousal in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Disorders of arousal (somnambulism and night terrors) were significantly more common among children with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (n = 57) than among children with seizure disorders (n = 58) or learning disabilities (n = 53). Neurohumoral disturbances may account for the differences.

Research note: sleep problems of normal Chinese adolescents.

Eight hundred and forty-six Chinese adolescents were surveyed concerning sleep behaviours including insomnia, nightmares, somniloquism, somnambulism, bruxism, and enuresis. Bruxism was reported most frequently (22%) followed by somniloquism (17%) and insomnia (14.9%). Subjects were compared by sex, age, and rearing by parents or parent surrogates. Cross cultural comparisons and the possible significance of findings are discussed.

[Nighttime eating disorders--clinical symptoms and treatment].

Nighttime eating is categorized as either night eating syndrome (NES) or the sleep-related eating disorder (SRED). Both diseases are often connected with an increase of the body mass, obesity, and with psychiatric disturbances. NES is characterized by evening hyperphagia, abnormally increased food intake after the evening meal, nocturnal awakings with ingestions, morning anorexia, and insomnia. Patients suffering from NES are aware of their nocturnal ingestions. It is suggested that NES is an abnormality in the circadian rhythm of meal timing that occurs in people with normal circadian rhythm

Parasomnias manifest different phenotypes of sleep-related behaviors in age and sex groups. A YouTube-based video research highlighting the age slope of sleepwalking.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Finding typical patterns - phenotypes - of sleep behaviors characterizing parasomnias in different age and sex groups. METHODS: We analyzed YouTube videos on sleep-related behaviors likely representing parasomnias. We applied the search terms "sleepwalking", "somnambulism", "sleep eating", "sleep sex", "sleep talking", and "aggression in sleep" in six languages. We classified those persons shown on the videos into estimated biological sex and age (child, adult, elderly) groups. We scored the activity types by a self-made scale and applied binary logistic regression to analyze

Further evidence for an association between affective disorders and anxiety disorders: review and case reports.

The relationship between anxiety and affective disorders continues to be debated in the literature. The authors report a case of identical twins concordant for attention deficit disorder and somnambulism but discordant for major depression and agoraphobia with panic attacks. The authors discuss the implications of this "finding in nature." Results from neuroendocrinological, family, and twin studies are also reviewed that either lend support or question the existence of a relationship between anxiety disorders and affective disorders.

The Real-World Safety Profile of Temazepam: A 20-Year Pharmacovigilance Analysis Based on the Large-Scale FAERS Database.

OBJECTIVE: Temazepam has not been adequately investigated for its long-term safety profile in broad patient populations. This study aimed to characterize temazepam's real-world long-term safety profile. METHODS: Reports of adverse events from Q1 2006 to Q4 2025 comprising temazepam were collected from the FAERS database. Data were analyzed using disproportionality methods including the proportional reporting ratio (PRR), the reporting odds ratio (ROR), the multi-item gamma poisson shrinker (MGPS), and the Bayesian confidence propagation neural network (BCPNN). RESULTS: A total of 2788 advers

The parasomnias of childhood.

Parents are rarely questioned in detail about the sleep characteristics of their children except during the infancy period. Somnambulism, commonly known as sleepwalking, affects approximately 15% of young children. Safety is the biggest concern for a family whose child sleepwalks. Other parasomnias include night terrors, nightmares, and sleeptalking. This article explores the incidence and characteristics of parasomnias, reviews the physiology of sleep, and offers pediatric nurse practitioners information for history taking and anticipatory guidance.

Sleepwalking.

Sleepwalking is one of the parasomnias, a group of disorders that also includes night terrors, nocturnal enuresis and nightmares. This disorder of arousal is much more common in children than in adults, and it is commonly associated with other parasomnias. Sleepwalking typically occurs during the first three hours of sleep, when sleep stages 3 and 4 (non-rapid-eye-movement sleep) are most prevalent. The episodes usually last 30 seconds to 30 minutes. The differential diagnosis of sleepwalking includes partial complex seizures occurring during sleep, rapid-eye-movement behavior disorder, night
